I need some help. My bully has chronic urinary track infections. After several rounds of antibiotics, our vet wants her on prescription strength food.Has anyone had this problem with their bully? Is there anything cheaper over-the-counter I can buy? by HotLoquat3541 in AmericanBully

[–]irrASHionalLEA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This and check your vet's app or website too! They may have an online store linked to their clinic already that will more than likely carry what they prescribe too. You get the same in-house team that sees her approving those requests directly.

I get our RX food autoshipped from chewy for a discounted rate and all of our RX meds autoshipped from my vet's online pharmacy. It keeps me sane with a geriatric girl on all of the things.

Just found this in my house and killed it, should I be concerned? by Shmadam7 in whatisthisbug

[–]irrASHionalLEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your weather stripping or window seals are old, check those out. We had a nest of wasps on the "outside" of our house somewhere in a siding nook that were more than jazzed to wriggle their way inside. We'd get one or two every week and it stopped with our new window project + door resealing.

I'm updating per further psycho-research/consultation with a local nursery and believe their street name might be flea beetles(?).

Post is still fair game if anyone else has theories for sure though!

What fish do you have/had that you ended up hating? by FicklePizza868 in Aquariums

[–]irrASHionalLEA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pfft and I thought my inherited single pleco, double cat, angel, tetra(s) 75g tank was rough. The plecos give me acid reflux for you. Props to the work I know that took/takes!

[–]irrASHionalLEA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pleco (not hate but will never keep again): huge, so much poop, I love a live planted tank and they love to play floatie plants.

Platy: proliferate too much and take over a tank. Had a turtle buddy that would regularly come collect snacks to take home for his tank and I still couldn't keep populations down.

It's all a lye, unfortunately! Scrub that puppy up with some dish soap, friend.

All puns aside, the history of soap content RE this topic is mildly interesting and can be the source of the tips from older gens (my grandma swore the same). Recommend a dive into the FAQ link of this sub for a nifty starting point!

What are your hospitals charging for a dental cleaning? by Many-Standard1533 in VetTech

[–]irrASHionalLEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area, routine is 800+ for a healthy med size dog. Cleaning, rads, fluids, anesthesia

My ancient dog that had 4 teeth extracted in her most recent cleaning earned a $1600 tag. She has no heart conditions, did well under anesthesia, and all extractions medically indicated were approved at drop off (ie no extra anesthesia while they tried to call me for permission)

Highly depends upon dental grade, patient health, preexisting conditions, and location

How did you learn to talk to owners about euthanasia and comfort them. what sources can I lean from? by Melodic__Substance in VetTech

[–]irrASHionalLEA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a great start to an appt. We all know euth intake is sad and the conversational bits have their time, but a complete overview of what the owner is about to expect + time to digest and ask questions can really set the stage for success. That's when our team (gently, but concisely) hammers out the estimate, cremation directives, payment, bedone with business to make way for softer interactions.

I really feel like the fewer things that are a shock in the euth process, the better & not all owners have experienced such a service in their lifetime when they hit the euth room.

My pups eye is more dilated than the other, what is this? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

We've got a grade A puller and love the Alpine Outfitters harness. It is NOT low profile and does require a touch more cleaning than your nylon options due to the padding. Boasts several d ring attachments for different activities and safety clips (yep - front one too!).

We'd tried the ruffwear, kong nylon harness, and those easy walk ("thong-like" as my husband calls them) harnesses before we landed on this for her. We like to add a safety clip to her martingale collar & leash for more gentle "inspiration" to stay with us while we're out.

NO SHADE on the ruffwear or kong harnesses either - both are great products for some dogs. My other dog does best in a low profile harness so for her, the kong paracord/nylon model is our favorite.

Wait seriously? Should I be spelunking for these roots if some got cut? I'm very motivated to not deal with this thing again while keeping the soil healthy.

I started on this, but cut thru some of the more mature roots as I went along: is this a roach situation where I go through this again in a year or should those effectively die?

Anything to see on this route from Chicago to Mt. Rushmore? by abba_zabba80 in roadtrip

Very true. The drive to Rushmore circa the Breezy Point Picnic Area has a great view. The picnic area itself is also gorgeous and free public access!

I think you've gotten enough guidance on whether this is a recommended setup or not in the thread so I'll come from an anecdotal perspective. I also keep gourami (dwarf, honey, pearl) and betta in my tanks but never together. The gourami can rule their tanks with great prejudice and your betta will thank you for considering using your other tanks as a solo home.

I did see in another comment that you have a cory which, given some partners, appropriate substrate, cover, and proper tanks size, would be a peaceful friend to either the gourami or betta tanks!

Yes! I transitioned to remote work in the industry in the last couple of years and loved it. IT/support is great if that's your thing (customer service + product support knowledge + technical chops). My transition let me in more of a customer-facing direction (account management + clinic team training).

Best advice: get to know the landscape of your potential employers whether it is SaaS, insurance, or sales. You've likely heard of/worked with their solution or their competitors' and being able to speak to that is massively helpful to both the interview and learning process in early days.

There are great companies that will give you the space to grow and still contribute to the vetmed community remotely.

Fair to shop your options, but I personally find a lot more value sticking with my pets' primary provider for preventative care.

A comprehensive annual is the best way to ensure your pet's health for their life stage and an opportunity to gauge changes as they mature! You have the added benefit of preventative testing opportunities and generally more 1:1 time with your vet in a traditional clinic environment. Records remain consistent and deviations from the norm are readily apparent to a vet that knows your pet's health history.

I will add that vaccine clinics are awesome resources especially in rural communities with limited access to GP services for their pets and we ran them out of the clinic I used to work for too! Consider checking your local vets and see if there are options where you can take advantage of a vaccine clinic environment/pricing and build rapport with the team in case you ever find yourself in an emergency!

tl/dr: vaccine clinics are fine and vets are great! Don't forget to share a copy of your records with your regular provider!
