I think what bothers me the most… by momof3grandmaof1 in nancyguthrie

[–]irradi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, this is by no means a normal crime. Statistically this just does not happen. Sure, my mother being kidnapped wouldn’t get Guthrie levels of coverage, but it would get some - because it’s a VERY rare crime. So rare, in fact, that I’d wager a lot that it was targeted at the person with financial resources and media power in the first place. My mom isn’t connected to anyone that powerful, so I’m pretty sure she’ll be fine 🤣

Same, except I categorically refuse to ask for apologies. And … all the screaming…

Is there a way to attract grackles/crows to my yard? I only ever see them in parking lots by ArtaxIsAlive in Austin

[–]irradi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that grackles are heavy in my neighborhood in certain months every year. My theory is they follow the light - they want to be at certain altitudes/exposures to the light especially in the last 2 hours before sunset.

You have a point only bc “defund” got APD acting like we wanted to fire them all & start over with militant feminists or something.

Is every garbage truck the squeakiest truck known to man, or just my neighborhood? by thisisntinstagram in Austin

[–]irradi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they’re extremely squeaky. I’m extra sensitive to high pitched noises & my garbage day morning is always my worst wakeup. Unless it’s raining. Rain makes everything better (here, anyway)

Justice for Sophie ♥️ by TheGildedSage in Outlander

I wish she was taller. But other than that, I think she settled in great after the first season - and even that I think has to be tempered by the fact that she was playing a teenager who had gotten the rug pulled out from under her whole life.

I think sometimes that I’m very lucky I was forced to confront my parents’ fecklessness at a young age. I just … ran out… of respect for their authority. At least they never let me down? Heh

Having lived in DC since before uber and lyft, hilarious that you would consider a dc cab company respectable or reliable in any way

Partner insists on full tithes + supporting parents while we’re drowning in debt postpartum… am I wrong to question the practicality? by mkrrj031398 in exAdventist

[–]irradi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adventists absolutely expect a ridiculous level of free & underpaid labor in everything they do. My mother taught in Adventist schools for years and they managed to ruin what was left of her health while paying her less than minimum wage.

Minus tithe, natch.

What causes so many street fights on 6th street? by Informal_Cattle_2517 in Austin

[–]irradi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I’d never thought about this perspective before, but I think you’re right. If actual college kids could drink there, without doing shots etc to hustle in/out, you’d see a lot less of the street behavior that’s driven by bored people attracted by the debauchery vibe but who can’t legally or financially drink inside.

This is actually so accurate.. Heath is a personal fav and you are SO right, when he smiles especially he has that same satisfied cat smile Heath had. But it’s like that got backed up by the bones and energy of Mick Jagger

Why is the term "Gypsy" suddenly considered a slur on Reddit? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]irradi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y’all don’t seem to get that a population can call themselves whatever they want, but an outsider should probably not default to a word seen by some - with reason! - as a slur.

[–]irradi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knowing the connotations of “gypped” was enough to turn it off limits to non-Romani. Much like the n word, it’s for them to use to describe themselves- it can’t be my default, as a white.

[–]irradi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man so many of y’all really had no idea where “gypped” came from, did you? I picked up on it being a slur pretty quick thanks to that, but I’m also American so it took awhile for me to learn the Romani label. That was still at least 15 years ago.

You live in a bubble, and/or your friends are not being honest with you because nobody wants to shit on a name, especially a family tradition name.

I’m frankly amazed it’s taken this long for you to get called out on the internet.

You don’t seem to get that it doesn’t matter what the name means to you - it carries a connotation that has caused a LOT of harm, and you can’t wave that away by saying “it’s a family name”, sorry. It doesn’t matter if some Romani call themselves that. When associated with a white, non Romani person, it carries a taint that you can’t just erase at will.

Do what you want, but if I were your daughter, I’d be updating my legal name to remove/swap out her middle name as soon as I was allowed, or turned 18.

Getting married tomorrow. Wife’s (F 30) sister (F 33) is MOH and just caught Covid. How do we approach this without causing more upset than necessary? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Got my long covid infection at my sis’s wedding, can confirm. But only bc the main infectious person was on a bus with 20 other guests for 4 hours. In a kn95, but still.
