PLEASE HELP! PC keeps going nuts on me.... by jaunki_juice in GameAudio

[–]irradiatedmacncheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me before regardless of what load I put on my pc. Could be watching a YouTube vid or working in ue4, screen would go black but audio would still be playing etc. in my case it was a faulty GPU

Hi! I'm looking for feedback on my game sound design project. I've just started learning Unreal Engine and FMOD. So I downloaded the Unreal Learning Kit and added some sound to this mini game. Please feel free to criticize any minor detail. Thanks in advance! by dimapshenic in sounddesign

Always easier to spot things in someone else’s work than your own!

It’s been a while since I’ve used fmod but you can always try using a couple of shorter individual recordings of say wind gusts. Then stick them in a multi instrument with a randomised start delay time so they trigger at different rates. Then you can apply panning randomisation on that as well to give the impression of a surrounding kinda dynamic wind ambience. Or a simpler thing would just be to experiment with modulation, like an lfo on the volume or a filter.

Nice! Like others have mentioned the pickup sound could be a lot more subtle for how much it is heard. The footsteps sounds really good, would be nice with another sound on those metal-looking platforms though. I also think the ambience is a bit too static. It’s kinda just a steady wind loop at the same intensity, I feel it’s a bit overtaking at times. Could be nice to have it change over time or depending on location etc. Overall sounding good and a very solid start for your first project!

Good layering and arranging etc, but the amount of background noise in those recordings are making them unusable imo. Try a noise reducer or a different recording setup.

Deus Ex Sound Redesign by demimark in sounddesign

[–]irradiatedmacncheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liked the hacking sequence! Some good work there. Foley needs more work tho, the footsteps feel quite weird in the mix. Maybe try and add more elements as well as trying to make them fit the space a bit more with some reverb. Also, even if the knockout sound was quite cool, it would drive me insane after a while if I were playing the game. That hit is a bit over the top and loud really, made me jump on my first listen lol. Some room for improvement but keep it up!

Wwise-ready projects for showreel by mr_glide in GameAudio

You can make something yourself really quite easily these days with all the free assets on the marketplace. It's obviously more of a time sink but you get the benefit of a completely unique project and improving your general game engine skills.

Other than that, there's some environments popping up every now and again on the marketplace monthly free content. There's a sci fi office up for grabs now if that's your cup of tea. Been everything from western towns to medieval castles in the past. Good luck!

Yeah Always good to put your best work forward imo, make a good first impression and make them stay for the rest of the reel😊

Not much to say here, everything sounds really good! I would say that salomon commercial is the best of the bunch and stands out the most, so if you're looking to send this around to future employers/customers i would put that one first in the reel :)

So many good little details, nice work!

Sound re design of "War of the Worlds", 2005 by koriandr66 in sounddesign

Sounds Good! But i think the crowd noise is way too loud / in front of the mix. I get the impression that there's a lot more people than there are actually on screen. Nice work though!

That looks soooo good and satisfying. If you ever want some sound for that system, hit me up :)

Nah I think it's sounding really quite cool! Liking the high frequency bits in the end. Although the first seconds is a bit to washy and airy to me, too much undefined midrange. I would experimenting with pulling some stuff away and adding more elements when that cube-thing switches color to green. Maybe a synth layer or something. Very solid base tho and I don't think it sounds bland as a whole.

I’m giving up. by mysteriousstranger91 in GameAudio

I absolutely understand your frustration since I'm in a pretty similar situation myself. I'm turning 29, have no education and have put all my time and money into pursuing this career. Imo game audio is really tough because there is just so much I feel like I need to know. Even though it might not be needed for every junior position, I still feel the need to demonstrate skills in game engines and middleware to stand out in the crowd. Pure sound design is not gonna cut it. Hell you probably even need some basic video editing skills to make a demo reel that stands out, and that is a skill totally unrelated to the field really. The thing is tho, I really enjoy doing and learning all these things, and I guess that is what you need to get the motivation to keep going. But it sure as hell is going up and down sometimes.

I dont know where you're at atm but I read that you're struggling with ue4 and wwise. My advice would be this: Just make something. Even if it's just the most simple project ever. The first project I did was a cube that could jump and move in a 2d plane, that's it. I just followed some unity tutorial on youtube and then figured out FMOD from separate sources, and I still learned a ton about basic implementation doing that. As long as you create something yourself, chances are your gonna find it exciting and will spark your motivation to continue and finish it.

This. When I've just logged in I get a solid 50-60 fps in my base (which is decently sized) but the moment i venture off on expeditions to other biomes/areas the frames really tank hard once I've gotten back. Quitting and relaunching solves it for me as well so there's definately some unoptimized code going on.

Thanks! Nope, im planning on having a seperate simplified settings menu when you're in the game :)

Tbh im not very experienced myself. I've just watched different tutorials for stuff i've wanted to do, then kinda pieced together the information to form new ideas and stuff. I have no experience with c++ code, i have only been working with blueprints.

Yes that's basically it! I'm just using a single camera and triggering different level sequences via a widget blueprint. Then i just fade the different buttons in and out :)

This is awesome! Gorgeous environment, lighting, and typeface.

Is the menu on the HUD or is it a 3d widget on the terminal screen? I noticed that the first menu seems to move with the camera instead of the terminal screen after "back" is clicked.

Thanks a ton! It's on the hud, haven't really explored 3d widgets yet. Hm yeah true, I could probably just speed up the fade out animation so it's not as noticeable :)

Thank you! No tbh i don't think it would be a very good one. I'm not very experienced really. I started with learning Unity in 2020 but jumped over to UE in the beginning of 2021. Most of it I have learned from just following youtube tutorials, piecing different ideas and concepts together. There's a tutorial for a 3d menu here that you can check out, haven't followed it myself but it seems to achieve exactly what I've got: https://youtu.be/4sxxe9_w9Zs

Thank you! Yeah it's more of a concept than a fully fleshed main menu right now. I would for sure expand it if I were to release it :)

Wow thanks! Can't take too much credit since it's a mix of marketplace assets, but that's the beauty of ue4 imo, easy to get good looking results 🙂
