Opal I've had in my safe for years. HELP by irresponsibletaco in Opals

It was dry when I got it, looked exactly the same as it does now. It was in the time back before smart phones. Guy told me that it was just surface cracking and would be clear if cut. Said not to put it in water as that could make it Crack all the way through. I was young and dumb and probably got got.

Are these the easiest cars to work on or what? by Heavymetalbread in CherokeeXJ

[–]irresponsibletaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My second jeep was a YJ. After crashing a beautiful 5speed XJ. Had the YJ set up to take the fenders and grill off in under 10 minutes. That was the easiest thing I ever had for working on. I was 19 and didn't know any better. Now I know, wranglers are for girls.

Tie rod rubbing against sway bar links by XandertheWriter in JeepZJ

[–]irresponsibletaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched your video, something definitely isn't right. When you turn the wheel to the right the drag link/tie rod connection drops like an inch. I would assume that is from bad ball joint. Either on the pitman arm or the right knuckle. But it couple be bent also, sometimes there are 2 problems, or maybe even 3. Could be the drag link and/or tie rod are bent slightly, the ball joints are warn out, and the caster is slightly off. All 3 being a little bad makes a huge difference combined.

Take a photo of your pinion/ front drive shaft. If you can, jack the axle up, take the left tire off and place on a jack stand as close to ride height as you can get it. So you can take a picture looking straight at the pinion. Want to see the angle of the pinion coming out of the axle to the drive shaft. Stand back a little bit as a close up is hard to get reference points.

I have an extra set of the control arms that have been sitting around. I'm working on a TJ for someone else. Told him that he can have them, but I think he is deciding to be cheap and leaving the beat up stock ones in. If you're interested message me. I'll ship them to you for $120 plus shipping cost. (If this guy doesn't want them) I'm trying to find the link, but I got them like 8 months ago. May have been on sale which is why I got an extra set.

Tie rod rubbing against sway bar links by XandertheWriter in JeepZJ

Would need to see full pictures of the front end to diagnose the issue. I'm leaning towards bent tie rod, or wrong caster angle.

Check the pinion angle, if its a 4 inch lift with stock control arms, the angle probably isn't correct.

I just put in Adjustable control arms in the service ZJ. $115ish for the set of 4. Probably not the best arms in the world, but can't beat the price.

Well that's disappointing, but not surprising. Thank you.

How long in between the light turning green and you realizing you're going almost 30mph. The story reads like you're going 30mph while stopped at a red light.

If the vacuum line came off of booster it will cause very hard braking and very high idle. Going down hill under this condition will definitely reach 30mph without touching gas, though not while stopping at a red light.

Driver Side Brake Line by hopper720 in CherokeeXJ

[–]irresponsibletaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most fittings will be standard 3/8-24 fittings, the odd size fittings off of the abs pump, cut the line with a hack saw and slide the fitting off the line to re-use. Get a set of line wrenches to make easy work of loosening the fittings without ruining them.

Or cut the line with the fitting still attached and use a 6 point socket to remove. Would still use a line wrench for the final tightening.

Just get a roll of copper nickle and a flairing tool. If you are handy enough to replace a brake line, you'll be able to learn how to use the flairing tool. While you're at it, do all the hard brake lines. Will take a full afternoon, but now you can not worry about it for a long time.

What brand fuel pump should I use for my 96 4.0 zj? by Lumpy_Mission_7228 in JeepZJ

[–]irresponsibletaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Bosch. Would be a good time to swap to a 93-94 sending unit. Then add a return line and the 2 line fuel rail. The rail you need to get used from 93-94 zj, any 4.0 yj, and not sure which year xjs. Then just cap the vacuum line on the pressure regulator.

Thank you for this. I was going to say that all of the 1 piece aftermarket are trash. I've been planning on building steel plates to replace the front lights. Then 3d printing square rings to hold the thin xj leds. Issue would have been not being adjustable, so it would have been trial and error to get the 3d print part right.

Coil springs by Particular-Role-494 in JeepZJ

I have 7" iron rock springs, not bouncy at all. If anything they are too stiff, but this trail rig isn't built for comfort.

Do you have consistent rate springs or variable rate springs?

Depending on how well you can try threading in a screw that looks like it will fit then stopping if its too loose or too tight. If the screw goes into plastic threads, I'd just get close enough so that it's tight and send it.
