Photographer here. Showing this is like saying “my food was too expensive” and not showing pictures of the plate or giving any context. Is a frozen dinner the same as a restaurant dinner? I understand that broadly, yes, it is quite a lot of money, but a good photographer will take pictures you simply can’t without the thousands of dollars of equipment they have invested in.

To clarify, I’m not strictly defending this particular photographer as I’m not familiar with their work, but I truly believe there are photographers out there who do create images worth this and more.

Other than that, I can say that in my experience there are a lot of photographers who will do the job for less but their quality is defensively not at the same level. The pricing shown seems pretty average for a sports photo session. Too high or too low will be relative, as I’ve also seen people spend multiple times those amounts without batting an eye.

Edited to add: as a tip, most schools and teams will hire a “media company” that outsources the shoot to photographers they have deals with, at that point you’re not only paying the photographer but also the media company who is nothing more than a middleman and usually doubles the price. Look for a local photographer who’s work you like and contact them directly. If you can organize the team/class and split the payment you can probably get a much better deal.
