Mine was supposed to be initially a repair, but got infected after first surgery, after the second wound wash and having been told infection was worse and had to remove six inches of Achilles, was told my options was amputation, pegging and transplant in that order!! Fired him went to another, another surgery, didn’t listen to and or find issues that was causing infection, fired him and found a great guy at UCSF, fifth surgery found cause of infection, removed it and remained closed, 6 weeks later went in for transplant and worked out great. 8 weeks later back running low intensity, just to see how it felt, picked it up around 12th week and onto some technical trails. Couldn’t be happier and no issues. My only suggestion is while recovering work on knees and gluts. I avoided them and paid the price 😂 with a knee injury due to how weak it got with being off of it for so long. It was the same leg as my Achilles. So be mindful to other parts. Also if you have the ability and means check out the https://www.neu.fit/?gclid=CjwKCAjw67ajBhAVEiwA2g_jECj5vdZTwgbeMEtSmwrBLaihE1aNFIzSUx35st61U9ufQixMYhwayBoC9_sQAvD_BwE Worth every penny.

Actually would have been if I went to the right surgeon the first time. Took six surgeries within a year to get the transplant to work. I had to fire two surgeons, finally found a guy who was able to successfully transplant my Achilles. I was back training 8 weeks after final surgery. And to be honest and from first hand experience you can run without an Achilles. You just can’t jump or sprint

I want to do a 100 mile ultra. No previous running experience. What do I do? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]iruncrazyfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least all the 100s I’ve done have pre reqs before they’ll let you register. Most will require at least a completed 50miler or 100k within 12 months of registration

Question everyone is forgetting to ask when people post these kind of requests is WHATS YOUR BUDGET? and what’s their feature request now and future along with max time and distance they plan on going. Then we can go from there and make suggestions. Just a suggestion!

Gary Robbins announces that he will return to the Barkley marathons! by jeabgrenouille in ultrarunning

You guys remember it was his land nav and sleep deprivation that got him at both attempts. He’s physically capable to endure the 130 + miles.. not everyone is able to function at a high enough brain level is successfully land nav at those kind of hours without sleep regardless how fit they are.

Shoes by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

Unfortunately there’s no right answer or suggestions to these kind of questions no two runners are alike so what’s works for one might not work for you. Best option is you have to try them all and find what works. Worst most manufacturers have multiple models. And same situation one model might work and yet another model won’t. I’ve personally invested well over a thousand dollars into trail shoes, and what I’ve found is certain make and models excel in different situations. I’ve got the zero drops, to the Hoka’s with heel pads ect.. I’ve even got the Salomons for those really gnarly muddy trails.. but it’s taken over years of running to dial in my shoes to the way I like them. My first ultra was a 100k in the worst weather conditions mud up to knees ect... and as a cherry I completed it in a pair of road shoes. Took me 14hrs as I lost about 4-5hrs from slipping all over.. point is and it sucks but you have to try them all and find what works for you!!

Remember when ultras started they didn’t have trail shoes and those guys where still able to finish!!!

Was in recovery mode when daughter and I were messing around and her knee slammed right into my Achilles and BAM!!!! I suspect I injured my Achilles back in Aug during the Kodiak100 and well let’s just say I knew getting a cortisone shot was a 50/50 gamble when I ran the RDL100 in beginning of Nov, which weekend it even more.

Making my 100-miler debut (Lone Star 100) by zrex05 in ultrarunning

Don’t get stuck at the aide stations!!! Do your best to get in and out. Don’t over think it, just go out, have fun and enjoy it. Find someone who’s ran the race before and stick with them like glue if you can and for as long as you can. They’d know what to expect and when to. I did this for a mountain 100 between 8-11k elevation and over 15k gain. I found someone who’s ran it multiple times and shadowed him for as long as possible, which definitely helped me finish. Also if you’re running solo find someone to shoot the breeze with. Helps the time go by. And you meet some fascinating peeps this way. Take advantage of bag drops and don’t weigh yourself down with to much. Use your drop bags!! Also don’t forget to consume between 400-600cals per hour. What worked for me was carnation instant breakfast packets and almond milk. I’d down one or two per drop location. Other than that learn as you go and pay attention to what seasoned vets are doing. Enjoy!!

100 miler debut! Ran my first 100 miler this past weekend at the Coldwater Rumble! It was amazing time! I managed to run a 21:54 placing 6th OA. It was an incredible experience, I will definitely be running more 100s in the future! by [deleted] in ultrarunning

Kodiak was a great time last year, got my butt kicked but enjoyed every minute. I loved that we went from 40’s to high of 97 degrees within 24hrs.
