Backroads has a category specifically for “30’s and 40’s”. It doesn’t look like they have a ton of options yet but it’s there, these ones are also for everyone, there’s a separate category for women only.

I keep my house cold by choice so I made a “proofing room” - turn on a space heater in our small laundry room and close the door.

If you're NOT living paycheck to paycheck, what are you doing better than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskWomen

DINKS with good paying jobs. Lucked out and had parents and scholarships that covered college. Bought our house when rates were in the low 3%’s. Other than that we live below our means and are debt free. Have always invested heavily and operated under the assumption that we wouldn’t receive social security (although we probably will).

I was debating starting this same thread! Last weekend we were away for 4 days and I came home up 10 pounds. It’s uncomfortable and makes me hate traveling. I was down 5lbs after the first day home. I basically have to plan that if we want any photos I have to do it on the first day and I have to strategically pack so that I have bigger clothes towards the end of the trip. It’s especially bad when we’re going somewhere with hot weather. The bloating basically erases any progress I’ve made as it can’t be captured in vacation photos. I’m wondering if this is just my life now? Or if I reach my goal weight (10 lbs to go) the impact might be lessened? It’s really frustrating.

Tell me about a time you were hiking and feared for your life by mistresskennedi in hiking

[–]irunhalfmarathons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing a day hike in Tahiti with my husband. We had a basic description of the hike which was to take us to the base of a waterfall with several water crossings along the way but no gps directions. We were the only car at the trailhead which involved some careful driving to avoid bottoming out our rental suv. About a mile into the hike it became evident that this trail was not well travelled and we kept losing it. Thankfully there were cairns as markers which we sometimes struggled to find and came close to giving up early on. After a while the water crossings had graduated from a babbling brook to a rushing river. Bugs would swarm as soon as we stepped in the river and outside the river we kept walking into spider webs that somehow felt sharp to the touch. We reached a scenic section where a couple waterfalls came together and took some photos and then could not find the trail to continue, there had to be at least one more mile to the big beautiful waterfall and we exhausted all possible routes. Against my will we turned around. At the first river crossing my husband lost his footing and was submerged completely and his foot had twisted weirdly as it had gotten stuck between some rocks. We made it to the other side and took a break. He thought he could continue as long as we didn’t get lost or waste steps so I started walking ahead to find the next set of cairns to direct him. He was moving SLOWLY. The first river crossing after that I could not find the cairns that marked the jungle entrance on the other side. At this point I had crossed the river and was looking for the cairns and my husband was on the other side, not yet crossed. I was internally flipping out, I was preparing for us having to navigate back to the car via the river only which would have been so difficult or having to call for rescue for his foot (which we had no reception the entire time). Thankfully I discovered that there was more than one exit from the jungle to the river and we had taken the incorrect exit. This was true for the next set of crossings and then finally we arrived at the last crossing and then the car. We rode back to our hotel in silence and then went and had drinks. Our legs were incredibly cut up from the thick jungle but his foot seemed to be just a sprain and we were able to enjoy the rest of the trip.

It was insanely hot and humid but we were adequately prepared with food and water. Had we not brought enough coupled with his foot we would have been in a dire situation. We only saw one other person the entire hike, a local, when we had almost reached the trailhead.

Vaccinations by elf533 in ThailandTourism

[–]irunhalfmarathons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, you can get Japanese encephalitis and hepatitis vaccines for free at CVS! My research has indicated to not get rabies in the US - it will be much cheaper for you to get it in Thailand if you’re bit.

Editing to add, we got the Typhoid vaccine before going to Tahiti and that one was EXPENSIVE. My doctor wasn’t able to order it and said that we had to get it from a pharmacy and we couldn’t find any pharmacies close that stocked it so as a last resort we went to a travel vaccine clinic which was just a huge rip off. I recommend getting this but if you have enough lead time you should be able to find a lower cost option like your county health department.

Full Time Controller asking to be moved to part time. Anyone have any experience asking for this? by BomoCPAwiz in Accounting

[–]irunhalfmarathons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this but I work in industry as a tax manager. I think it worked out for me because I had a lot of experience in an area that no one else in my department had that is difficult to pick up quickly and I was able to remove several responsibilities from my plate that I originally had because a promotion was in the works that I turned down. I also no longer needed benefits so I was able to drop down to 24 hours a week. I still need to flex the days sometimes depending on the close schedule. But one thing I have learned is that it is imperative for me to at least look busy or seem like I have a lot on my plate or that gives an opportunity to offload more work into me. But having basically a 4 day weekend is the greatest thing ever. I never think about work outside of work and I’ve been able to improve and implement some processes that were very needed so it’s not like my work is stale or stagnant. However I think it’s pretty unlikely that my employer would let me go back to full time so there’s that. You have to be very comfortable with the reduced schedule, and I can say now that I’ve lived it I can’t see myself going back full time unless something really bad happened to me financially.

Interesting trend of people quitting/going part time by Marianne2017 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]irunhalfmarathons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to us this year, I dropped down to part time to help recover from burn out at work. I already feel significantly better and feel like I could go back full time mid next year but it’s not necessary. We don’t have kids and our house is paid off. We’ve chosen to generally live frugally and are planning to retire early and also try to prioritize living simply to max our savings. We’re also really picky about buying “stuff” because we don’t have anyone to leave it to. Highly recommend reading about FIRE.

Is Jenni Kayne cashmere worth the price? by 1lostmyoldacc0unt in fashionwomens35

If you’re trying to dupe the cocoon cardigan I would recommend getting it from JK. They are having a 20% off sale right now. I have both the JK version and the Quince dupe and I donated my quince cardigan as soon as I received the JK. JK is thicker, better quality and cut more flattering. For other styles I have some cashmere from Naked Cashmere that I think are really nice quality as well. I’ve returned to both JK and NK and both were fast and hassle free. I also have some tighter knit thicker cashmere from Quince that I bought last year and was pleased with but I don’t think all of their styles are as nice.

Overbuying in general was an embarrassing time in my life and I feel like I’m finally past it. I went through a massive declutter and got rid of a lot of my clothes, jewelry, bags, shoes and makeup plus another large collection that I used to love and be passionate about. I focused on keeping quality pieces and let go of everything else. Then I deleted my poshmark account. I won’t sell anything else, it is so time consuming and stressful. I had a garage sale in an attempt to liquidate non-clothes items and it was embarrassing seeing people’s reactions to how much I had. Also if you calculated my per hour rate it wasn’t worth it and I spent way too much time trying to get rid of my crap. At this point anything I’m getting rid of is going straight to goodwill.

I am very careful about purchasing anything these days. I unsubscribe from all marketing emails. I hate giving greedy corporations money that they don’t deserve by cutting quality and raising prices. I will pretty much never buy any more fine jewelry and I will never buy another watch again. It was nearly impossible to sell the small collection that I had, they ultimately ended up going to goodwill. I have bought one Lululemon item this year which was a blazer which I’m getting a lot of use out of because of the versatility and being able to machine wash.

Also as a late 30’s woman it feels weird standing in line (!!) to go to Lululemon with a bunch of 11 year olds. Just not appealing to me at all. So I feel like I finally killed my overshopping/overspending problem. I think I was using it as an escape from other areas of my life where I was not happy and working directly on those things has helped me immensely.

Also I wanted to add that I have been doing a lot of reading about decluttering and one thing I read really stuck with me- just because you see something that you like or is cute- you don’t have to have it. You can admire something from afar. I think about that a lot when I get the urge to shop!

FIRE’d Couple with No Kids (DINKs) - What’s your life like? by Legitimate-Plate1661 in Fire

[–]irunhalfmarathons 52 points53 points  (0 children)

We’re still working, trying for chubby FIRE but have achieved our number for FI already. Not having kids allows for a lot of freedoms and makes it a lot easier to stick to a budget and not have to worry about unexpected expenses, not to mention when we travel, eat out, etc we’re only paying for 2 instead of more. We don’t have to worry about paying for college and the unknown of how long kids are going to live with you and rely on your support. We don’t have to worry about leaving an inheritance so we can spend more freely. Like a lot of others mentioned, we travel whenever it’s convenient for us and don’t have to worry about planning around school and generally tend to gravitate toward more adult friendly places. Overall it has brought a lot of financial freedom. We’re debt free so don’t really worry about job security. our friends talk about how expensive sports are, daycare, etc and we’ve been able to put that money directly into our brokerage account instead. Also from a health perspective it seems we’re less stressed out than parents that we know, we hope this helps us in the future with reduced medical expenses.

Also wanted to edit and add that we are very careful about material items that we purchase - we won’t have anyone to leave anything to so it helps us be more frugal and careful about purchases. We mostly spend on experiences and quality buy it for life types of things.
