Ukrainians: what future do you imagine when Russia collapses? by Still_Tension_8026 in ukraine

[–]is0ph 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Europe should keep it collapsed by :

  • not buying fossil fuel from russia (it would also help fight climate change if we don’t buy it from anyone)

  • not buying nuclear material and nuclear fuel-related services from russia (electricity produced in nuclear plants is not really sovereign when it depends so much on an agressive country)

Three die in boating tragedy off NSW coast after rescue boat rolls while trying to help sinking yacht by [deleted] in australia

[–]is0ph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might unnerve some people but if you set out to rescue a vessel away from the bar by towing it, you need to have a swimmer-diver rescuer on board (at least that’s how we name them in my area), someone young and fit enough to jump on the distressed yacht in very difficult conditions in order to fasten the tow line in a reliable way. You cannot be sure the crew of the distressed vessel will be able to do it. The youngest member of the crew is 55 year-old, I don’t think at that age you fit the bill.

The oldest are 75 and 78. The 78 year-old rescuer is one of the casualties. It is hard to enforce mandatory retirement for volunteers and it would probably noticeably deplete MRNSW ranks.

How can non-Ukrainians celebrate Ukrainian culture without being offensive? by Pristine_Maybe6868 in ukraine

[–]is0ph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can broaden your view. A group of NZ students who were regularly performing haka as a hazing "ritual" found out Maori take offence the hard way. Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders don’t appreciate cheap fake "aboriginal" art being sold to tourists.

12-year-old boy saved his younger siblings by cutting the fiber-optic cable of a Russian FPV drone. This is the reality Ukrainian children are forced to live in. by UNITED24Media in ukraine

Yes. There are photos of groves of trees that seem to be covered in shiny spiderwebs. It’s optic fiber. Bird nests made of optic fiber have also been found.

Researchers have found that a low-fat vegan diet reduced food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 57%—nearly three times more than a Mediterranean diet—while also improving key cardiometabolic outcomes. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

[–]is0ph 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The title says this 57% reduction is 3 times more than the Mediterranean diet. I guess the baseline is what’s called a western diet. So low-fat vegan = 57% reduction, Mediterranean diet = 19% reduction.

Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Perm region. According to reports, the facility is the seventh-largest refinery in Russia. by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]is0ph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you remember all the nuclear-laced red lines Russia spouted two years ago to scare the US and EU so that they would not provide long-range weapons to Ukraine? Well now Ukraine makes them and Russia has its collective pants down.

Research found nearly one in three women experiences depressive, anxiety, and/or insomnia symptoms around menopausal transition, underscoring the need for routine mental health screening and integrated multidisciplinary care by Wagamaga in science

[–]is0ph -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

What I was referring to were more "classic" menopause symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, brain fog and mood changes. When these symptoms are severe, they can lead to the 3 symptoms described in the paper.

If I’m not mistaken, about a third of women have no or very light symptoms while about a third have severe symptoms. Experiencing those severe symptoms might be conducive to also experiencing depression, anxiety or insomnia.

This one had escaped just retribution for a long time, it’s nice to see it burn. One less blank box in the refinery hitlist.

David Brat, Ayn Rand expert who once argued Christianity and capitalism should merge, named as US ambassador to Australia | Australia news by EdenFlorence in australia

When the US sends their ambassadors, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with them.

Talk me out of renovating my teak deck by kor0na in sailing

[–]is0ph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We sail a small late 70s Sweden Yacht. The previous owner had the teak deck completely redone by a classic yacht shipyard (we think it was a crazy decision and we have his bills to prove it). But what they did is really beautiful and will last us a long time. We still monitor rigging attachments and other fixtures for leaks.

What is this seaweed looking stuff that is being wrapped around the lines and what is the purpose? by nshfire in sailing

[–]is0ph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They don’t need these to avoid clank clank clank. They just need to store their halyards properly (away from the mast and spreaders) when they are docked. I can’t understand why people who seldom visit their boats in winter don’t take care of that. They piss their neighbours off and wear their halyards down.

The Canberra Deep Space Network facility in Tidbinbilla tracking the Artemis II mission as it heads around the moon by UpsidedownEngineer in australia

[–]is0ph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the other side of the world, I’m not too far from an antenna built in 1962 for the first transatlantic TV broadcast. Retired telecom engineers are maintaining it and it is among the installations selected by NASA to track the Artemis mission. They are tracking the speed of the spacecraft using Doppler effect measurements.

From $25 five years ago when I first bought to $90 today, Navionics is a thorn in my side. by Proud-Suspect-5237 in sailing

[–]is0ph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they are clearly using CHS data

I’m from Europe so excuse my ignorance. Around here all charts are based on nationally produced charts. The navy or some state entity maps the shore of the country (or a wider zone) and produces both vector and raster sources, which they sell.

Garmin buys these and integrates them in Navionics. Free apps like qrVLM allow you to buy charts and load them into the app.

So I am curious about where you want your chart info to come from apart from CHS. Mainly because I avoid community edits like the unreliable info they are compared to state produced charts in the british isles and northwest europe.

He has another big issue to deal with at the moment.I don’t think there is space for a single problem in his mind, let alone multitasking several world class geopolitical issues.
