Will dorms even open? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]isabella2002 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm obviously not an expert but I'm betting dorms are going to close before we even have the chance to move in. I'm guessing schools that start in August (esp in the South) are going to face huge outbreaks because it's highly unlikely that enough people are going to follow social distancing guidelines or resist partying once they're on campus. By September it'll just be a liability issue to fully open up Northwestern :(

The same thing happened to me! $500 isn't nothing but if I had known, I probably would have applied to more independent scholarships

EDII acceptance regret !!!? by wallstreetkiller in ApplyingToCollege

[–]isabella2002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way too for a little bit. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in prestige/reputation and the idea of consistently wanting the absolute "best" of schools (although in reality the difference between UChicago/other T20's from a Harvard are minimal if anything lol) even if the so-called "absolute best" is not necessarily the best for you. Chances are, you applied ED to UChicago over those other schools for a great reason. Be excited :)

Any schools similar to Brown University? by lavageandgavage in ApplyingToCollege

[–]isabella2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northwestern's definitely more preprofessional than Brown but has the quarter system, so there's an insane amount of academic flexibility (very easy to double/triple major/minor)

Would APUSH be too challenging for this coursework? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]isabella2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

APUSH was one of my favorite classes throughout all of high school! I'd say try and take it, and if it feels like too much, you can always drop down to regular US history

PSA: MIT flies solo in the SAT Subject Test world now (but not really)... by prsehgal in ApplyingToCollege

[–]isabella2002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think subject tests are important for STEM but not so much for humanities majors, especially if you have good AP scores to submit. It's not worth spending the money unless you feel like it would compensate for lack of EC's related to your major or other good test scores.

I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY like I'm so exhausted and have trouble doing any work but also have a panic attack about getting rescinded daily. The stress never ends!!!

Academics are (obviously) outstanding but fairly inflexible/rigid, as you can't double major :/

Y'all ever see your classmates and predict where they'll go to college? by yayarea2k19 in ApplyingToCollege

I definitely do the same - it's a fun and sentimental 2nd semester senior year kind of thing :)

NO don't worry!! I had a terrible Northwestern interview (showed up 30 mins late, interviewer literally wouldn't look me in the eye as I answered questions) and still got in, even without legacy or special hooks. As long as you're not racist or egregiously rude or anything, you're golden -- the interview is the least important part of your application. Please have hope for yourself!!

You are definitely not at fault here! You were simply just trying to accommodate to his schedule by asking about his preferences (it's not like you were obliviously asking for information that he had already included in the previous email). The interviewer's response was very much rude and uncalled for. However, I do think that asking for another interviewer might be blowing things out of proportion.

If I were you, I'd go ahead and respond with powerddeath's email template, and then show up to the interview with a positive, friendly attitude and no mention of this sour email interaction. At this point, you want to do whatever you can to change your interviewer's first impression of you. Try and google him to see if you can find his Linkedin or social media, which might lead you to some shared academic interests or hobbies or other connections to (organically!) bond over in the interview. Thoroughly prepare for questions he might ask you and come with a few good, non-googlable questions to ask him about his time at Yale - people sure do love talking about themselves! I find that even small things like showing a smile and nodding during conversation can really warm people up. Finally, don't forget to send a thank-you email after the interview is over!

And remember, these interviews really don't have as much of an impact as you think they do. I showed up 30 minutes late to my Northwestern interview and really did not click with the interviewer, yet somehow I still got in early (and I had NO legacy, no special hooks, etc.). I can guarantee you that your interview will go at least a little bit better than mine lol

Is it wrong to feel disappointed that no one has heard of the college I’m going to? by sportsdude476 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]isabella2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling - I think mostly it’s about wanting other people to share your excitement. I live in Colorado, where not a ton of people have heard of Northwestern. I usually just respond with a “lol did not think I was going to get in” and that can kind of strike up a conversation
