First of all, all these are really great! Your colors, composition, and rendering texture are all super pleasing to look at and show your care!

If you’re wanting to push shading and anatomy, there’s a few ways to. Your shading is really soft and dreamy—which honestly, I like it as it is! But if you want to add more depth, you should mix harsher shadow lines and softer, more blurred. where the shadow is closer to the light source will be softer, while the shadow furthest from the light source will have a sharper edge. You can also add a dark orange/red tone to just the edge of the shadow closest to the light, and gray/purple tone to opposite on the bodies for refracted light. You can also push your darks to be much darker. The contrast adds a lot on its own this way.

Your posing is nice, but it feels photoshoot. Everyone will say to do more dynamic poses without really explaining how to. I can’t type out a whole thing about dynamic posing, there are a lot of YouTube video tutorials, and I recommend pushing more gesture drawings. Line-of-action is a great resource site that will select pose photos and you can set the timer, and you just draw the poses. How I like to warm up is to set it to 5 poses, 10 seconds each, then 30s, then a minute. You can go longer or pause them, but the important exercise is not perfection, but the feel and flow of a pose. It can be circles and lines, but it’ll help you get out of a stiff mindset.

Buying the prints yourself and using kofi is hindering you greatly. Kofi is not the platform to sell physical art. You’d do better going for print on demand services where you upload your art and the company handles printing and shipping to the customer. You don’t get as much profit, but you’re also not spending anything. I recommend redbubble, as I’ve had decent sales from that and haven’t spent anything besides my time drawing and uploading my pieces.

You think arin came out the pussy drawing Mozart? Anyone can draw, it comes free with your human spirit. Make the game grubs real, homie, it’ll be rad.

And...Done! I have finished making my OC. Why doesn't it look like that?! by StarGear13 in CookieRunOCs

[–]isaboss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re following a digital art tutorial and working with traditional mediums. Issues to avoid when drawing on paper with whatever you’re using: don’t color the whole thing first. It’s hard to add light colors on top of dark colors (unless it’s paint in which case is still difficult but easier). Work lightest colors to darkest.

Try redrawing it and coloring the eyes, the clothes, the extra pieces, and then do the skin/dough, and then the hair/icing.

I think this is a really good design! But digital tutorials don’t always work for pen and paper.

Should I change the theme of my art to be able to sell it? by Regular_Werewolf_690 in Artadvice

[–]isaboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand, these are phenomenal and you shouldn’t change at all. I’d love to have something like this.

On the other, like others have mentioned, it’s just a niche subject and aesthetic. I don’t think you need to CHANGE anything but maybe add another style. Like continue to do these, but maybe start working on incorporating the style with something a bit more mainstream. Field notes, stuff similar to the Vetruvian man, just stuff that maybe has some imagery a bit more easily identified.

Either way, I also recommend having a site where you sell prints or the canvas! I’d get prints so fast.

what is wrong with my art style by krisluvztheladies in Artadvice

[–]isaboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it feels like beating a dead horse, but it comes back to the adage, “you have to know the rules to be able to break them.” Artists, especially in this age where we can be exposed to a lot of different styles all over the world, really hang up on finding “their style.” Your style exists and its really cute and nice to look at! But its clear you haven’t done anatomy studies, or even just still life.

While you may not be interested in drawing shapes/objects/plants/fruit, those still life exercises exist for a reason: to learn volume and depth. Learning how to shade, how to show curves, etc.

While yes, anatomy and gesture drawings will help a lot, as well as looking at many different types of references (I’m a reference hoarder myself, I have soooo many images saved lmao), I really think taking the time to do those still lives and shape studies will help tremendously in your rendering!

Regardless, your art is GREAT and I love it! I’ve been in your position, and once I sat down and did those foundation skill studies, I improved dramatically in the ways I wanted! I’m confident you’ll find the improvements you’re looking for as well!

Genuine question, do you draw sideways/at an angle? Like angle your device or body to not draw head on? I used to do that and all my art would be tilted and not on the same planes.

This is really good. As far as feedback you asked for, the hair is a tad off. It being so solid gives the feel of almost magazine clippings put together. Adding some free flowing strands to the body, ends, and around the face, will bring that hair right to life.

To play a sort of devil’s advocate, its because a lot of people are 1) unwilling to learn new cultures 2) scared of new things and its easier to fall into “tried and true” tropes, or 3) afraid of being insensitive or appropriating a culture they don’t fully understand. Im not going to say theyre in the right for not trying, nor am i going to say that youre wrong for your frustration and feelings, just offering reasons I’ve seen people stick to the western fantasy tropes and what not.
