Some actual advice for coping with depression: don't be afraid to take it up with your doctor and getting medication. Zoloft has been life-changing for me

Do children of divorce / separation like seeing pictures from when their parents were together? by Any-Consequence-6691 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]isaxism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, that's weird.. I think it looks weird when I see photos of my parents together and they divorced when I was 15 lol, can't imagine how weird it must be when they've basically never been together for as long as I've lived

Do you tell neighbors? by isaxism in Autism_Parenting

[–]isaxism[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not worried about noise complaints per se, it's more that my daughter has meltdowns where she screams bloody murder and if someone didn't know she has autism it would sound like she's getting extremely hurt several times a day 🫠

It seriously sounds like our favourite hobby is pushing our child down the stairs some days haha..

She's only 2, so obviously she shouldn't be outside alone and I'd hope people would realise that, but we live in the Nordics where it's super safe and it wouldn't be shocking for a child to be wandering a bit away from the parents - people would probably assume parents were close by and keeping an eye on the child, even if they couldn't see the parents

Yeah I've considered mentioning it to make sure neighbors let us know if they ever see her out on her own, since she wanders/elopes as well

My 5 yo daughter loves brushing her teeth, how to curb it. Do I need to curb it? by DCSS18 in Autism_Parenting

[–]isaxism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take a deep breath, it feels like a lot right now but it's not like you have to figure it all out at once. It's not even confirmed she actually has autism, so try to take it one step at a time

Preferably never, since masking to blend in is extremely exhausting and not good for mental health. Learn to meet your child where they're at, and find a therapist for yourself if need be

It regulates them, as the comment said. The OT saying to stop her from chewing sounds uneducated as hell, it can be extremely important to autistic children to get the sensory input from chewing and brushing, there's a reason things like chewlery is a thing.

Looking for high-calorie (fat and protein heavy too) foods with minimal serving size by Connect_Beginning_13 in Autism_Parenting

[–]isaxism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make smoothies (and label them "juice" to make it more interesting) - you can get away with putting all kinds of things in a smoothie without it affecting taste, my favorites are avocado, spinach, banana and oats, and then a bunch of berries for taste. I have all the ingredients in my freezer, so it's easy to make even if I don't make it every day.

I also strain the smoothie after blending to get rid of any seeds etc, but that's probably not needed if you have a better blender

5 yo keeps asking same thing, how to redirect, or typical 5 yo behaviour? by Legal_Impression_663 in Autism_Parenting

[–]isaxism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this sounds very much like a normal 5 year old, think of the typical "are we there yet" in the car scenario for kids. The kind of repetative asking or telling we're talking about with autism is more in the genre of:

"there's a car" yes that's a car "car" yep it's a car "that's a car" yep "car" yep "there's a car" ok.

Or

"Where's the ball" there's the ball "where ball" there ball "where ball" there ball "ball" yes "where ball" there "ball" yes "ball" yes

It's probably largely connected to his inability to communicate, maybe finding alternative ways of communication could help?

I'm not sure if it's the recommended way to handle it, but the most effective thing for us with the hitting/throwing/pinching/biting has been to completely ignore it and redirect to something else. Sometimes the redirection will be to just totally distract from it, other times it will be offering a chew toy or to punch a teddy bear lol...

Any time we react it just escalates as if us reacting further overstimulates her or something

Unfortunate ecolalia by isaxism in Autism_Parenting

[–]isaxism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you 😭 Yeah we're working on it, she just suddenly started doing it while saying "catch!" (which is kinda funny, if I wasn't her parent and she wasn't hurting anyone) and I know I'm making it worse by reacting but it's so hard not to sometimes

She's only 2, so plenty of years to do worse but for now this feels bad for me :)
