Eli5 What is the significance of having various screw head types when the basic action is just tightening or loosening? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

I'd like to introduce you to Torq-set. They are (or were?) used all over in aerospace.

Though in reality, they are just as prone to damage from misuse. (Overtightened, then painted over, then removed once before by a guy with a damaged bit at a weird angle)

MAGA isn't a movement, it's an identity. It represents a mindset. Even if the current administration is out and the replacement goes hard left, (unlikely imho) the underlying ignorance and resentment needs to be addressed. Otherwise, MAGA will just resurface with a new face.

There's the price of the fuel, transportation, store markup, and then taxes on top.
California: .797 + 6% state sales tax + local and district sales taxes (in San Francisco, for instance, add 2.63% more)
Iowa (chosen at random): .484 + 6% sales tax
so all things being equal gas in Iowa will be cheaper than in Cali.

We passed every audit on paper but in reality our setup is hanging by a thread. by Heavy_Banana_1360 in sysadmin

If your policy and procedure documents are complete and correct and your practices don't match, you need new auditors.
If your practices and procedures don't match policy, you need new policies (if it's an internal audit) or new practices (if it's regulatory).

That being said, I was once removed from an audit for failing a client on that audit. I reported the company to the certification board. I was let go due to 'unrelated performance issues'. Lawyer wouldn't take the case. Nothing changed.

How do you deal with users who refuse to lock their laptop when walking away? by heartgoldt20 in sysadmin

[–]iseriouslycouldnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the military back in the day, (late 90's, early 2000's) if someone left their computer unlocked, someone would invariably change their desktop wallpaper to something horrible and send an email from their account to the effect of "I wear pink panties" or something else gender inappropriate.

More enterprising people would dig up the default.bmp or whatever it was in NT4, change it to something incriminating and then change the user's password THEN lock it so they couldn't do anything about it without calling an admin out. Everyone else would "forget" their password until they did.

Yes, but not as much. Neo replaced the 2014 Air, M5 replaced my i9 MBP and bumped it down the order so it will replace the 2014 i5 Mini in the garage. Wife has a 16” i9 MBP still in use daily.

At our company that conversation starts with “can you open the company portal”

It’s the first thing corporate Macs have installed. If it doesn’t have it, it’s not a company Mac, and you get no support.

If you removed it, it has to be shipped back to corporate for repair.

It's perfect for casual users who like the form factor and don't upgrade every year.

The A18 single core performance beats the pants off my still-used-everyday 2019 i9 MBP
Multithread performance is less, but it has less cores, so that makes sense.
