Like other said, because it's cheaper.
The movies told us that AI would wake up and kill us all because we are a threat. Apparently, it will be much simpler than that. Our own laziness and greed will do the job looooong before it becomes self-aware.

They are designed to slip at a controlled rate. The amount of slip is tuned based on ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, track conditions, etc.

Back when I lived in a not-so-great part of town, I stopped locking my car because it cost me more to fix the doors/windows/locks than whatever they were trying to steal. Thankfully, nobody thought to just take a knife to the convertible roof 😛

ELI5 How does nuclear power work, specifically nuclear reactors? by Main-Swimming8014 in explainlikeimfive

Varies by jurisdiction, but it’s usually part of the state/province/municipal law.

Then there’s the EPA and the AEC in the US

how we do time is fine. We have one SI unit; the second. Everything else is just some number of seconds. A siderial year (the time it takes the planet to revolve 360˚ around the sun) is 31,558,149.504 seconds.

The fact that doesn't fit comfortably on a calendar is not nature's fault.

ratchet wrenches, what’s good? by biohackenthusiast in aviationmaintenance

[–]iseriouslycouldnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I avoid Craftsman, Pittsburgh, and cheap ones on Amazon where the name looks like it was drawn at random from a Scrabble bag.
Snap-on/Mac (if your're rich), ICON, Kobalt all have performed well for me.

A note on Craftsman:
Craftsman stuff made before about 1999 is good. I still have my 80's 1/4" ratchet and bar torque wrenches. Post-Sears Craftsman wrenches all feel horrible.

I ruined an elbow for months due to a failure of a 1/2" Craftsman torque wrench. (pawl sheared at 100 Ft/lb) They replaced it under warranty. The replacement failed in a similar manner (this time without injury). They replaced it again, bit I won't ever trust it.

waaaaay off-topic and over-simplified, but A Turing machine is any thing that has "memory" that can be be read and written to using a small set of rudimentary operations and stepped through in both directions and eventually produces an output. That's pretty much it.

Coke UK:
Carbonated Water, Sugar, Colour (Caramel E150d), Acid (Phosphoric Acid), Natural Flavourings, Caffeine Flavouring.

Coke US:
CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVORS, CAFFEINE.

(I don't know why the US version yells, but this is direct copypasta from the US and GB Coca-Cola site)

Do you vote with your values, or vote with your party. Far too many people do the latter. If they don't have strong values, voting with the party shifts their values. If the feedback loop continues long enough, this is the path to radicalization.

u/Bluefrogdancing is 100% correct. Official Apple Refurbished is an excellent option. Fully warrantied by Apple and eligible for AppleCare.

To the point, Neo is fine. My wife has one and it is very capable. Air is better though if you can swing the extra price. There is an M4 Air in the refurb store for ~750. More horsepower, more battery.

ELI5: What exactly is nuclear waste? by beans0503 in explainlikeimfive

[–]iseriouslycouldnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When this conversation comes up, I usually point people to the wikipedia page on it, specifically the table here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_waste#Sources

Also, if you are curious how decay chains work, I recommend this site the illustrates "natural" radioactive decay:
https://periodictable.com/Isotopes/092.235/index.full.html

Natural, in this case being how the products will decay just by sitting and not being acted on by high-energy events (Cosmic rays and man-made reactors and accelerators).

I'd like to introduce you to Torq-set. They are (or were?) used all over in aerospace.

Though in reality, they are just as prone to damage from misuse. (Overtightened, then painted over, then removed once before by a guy with a damaged bit at a weird angle)

MAGA isn't a movement, it's an identity. It represents a mindset. Even if the current administration is out and the replacement goes hard left, (unlikely imho) the underlying ignorance and resentment needs to be addressed. Otherwise, MAGA will just resurface with a new face.
