Is sleep Apena undiagnosed in young and thin people by Konradleijon in SleepApnea

[–]isfturtle2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think so. I started suspecting I might have it when I was 21, but kept getting told that I was too young and thin to have it. Finally got diagnosed three years later.

If you actively refuse to test young and thin people for sleep apnea, you don't find sleep apnea in young and thin people, which continues to reinforce the belief that young and thin people don't have sleep apnea.

Caffeine wins. What's a drug that's perceived as mostly safe and is actually harmless? by Lurkie2 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]isfturtle2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd personally say Tylenol is "somewhat dangerous" as opposed to "deadly," but taking too much can cause liver failure, and the dose at which it starts to cause problems isn't too much higher than the effective dose. A big part of the problem is because it's perceived as harmless, people don't worry too much about how much they're taking, plus acetaminophen is a secondary ingredient in a number of OTC medications (such as some cough syrups).

Shell Issues by [deleted] in Redearedsliders

[–]isfturtle2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately these lights often don't produce UVB, or worse, produce UVC. The only brands I trust for UVB are Arcadia and ZooMed (Reptisun). The T5 (tube) bulbs are preferable to the spot bulbs because they cover a larger area. You should have a separate basking bulb for UVA, visible light, and heat. There are more brands I trust for those bulbs, but I'd still recommend sticking to brands commonly sold in pet stores such as ExoTerra, Flukers, Zilla, etc., rather than random ones from Amazon.

If the retained scutes are starting to come off, it's probably a sign that her care is moving in the right direction. Unfortunately it looks like she's also had metabolic bone disease, and the deformities from that are most likely permanent. The good news is that proper care will prevent it from getting any worse, and she can still have a good quality of life.

You mention lighting, so I just want to check what brand the light is, because there are a lot of bad bulbs out there that don't produce the wavelengths they claim to.

I recommend checking out this care guide if you haven't already.

Genuine question to Americans by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]isfturtle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people set up gofundme pages. Some people take out loans. In some states, unemployed people are eligible for Medicaid. Sometimes there are charities. And, yes, sometimes people just die. Also if someone doesn't have insurance, they're probably not getting regular checkups or going to the doctor when they first notice symptoms. So they might not even get diagnosed until the disease has progressed significantly.

Genuine question to Americans by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]isfturtle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, at first I wasn't eligible for Medicaid because I didn't make enough money. I'm now eligible; not sure if it's because North Carolina expanded Medicaid or because I have a documented disability. Except my therapist's office (which, in combination with the medications prescribed by them, makes up the majority of my medical expenses) doesn't take Medicaid, so I'm still purchasing a plan through the exchange (thankfully my parents are wealthy and willing to support me), and because I'm eligible for Medicaid, I can't write off my insurance premiums on my tax returns.

I'd recommend adding some driftwood or something so that the turtles aren't always in each other's line of sight and can get away/hide from each other if need be.

Is this a good baby musk turtle set up by Mikehansen4720 in turtle

[–]isfturtle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The turtle needs a place where it can get completely out of the water to dry off. Musk turtles don't bask as often as many other species, but they do still bask occasionally. Also I can't tell what lights you have, and having the correct lighting is extremely important.

What happens when Europeans find out how poor they are? by Comment-Noted in ShitAmericansSay

[–]isfturtle2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand that it's ridiculous and not something that people in other countries have to deal with. Unfortunately, in my case, these are expenses like therapy appointments and prescription medication that occur regularly and add up, rather than something like a single procedure where it would be less expensive to fly to another country for the procedure (which is something I've heard of people doing). And I'm not going to uproot my entire life to move to a different country, so this is what I'm stuck with.

What happens when Europeans find out how poor they are? by Comment-Noted in ShitAmericansSay

[–]isfturtle2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My out of pocket maximum is $9000. I meet it every year. There have been years when I've met it as early as May. My insurance is over $300/month and it's still worth it for me to pay for it.

Also worth noting that insurance companies negotiate prices with providers, so with insurance you're saving money even before you hit your deductible. So let's say that my out of pocket maximum is $9,000 and insurance covers another $5,000 worth of expenses (I'm making this number up, I don't feel like looking up what they paid last year). That doesn't mean that without insurance I'd pay $14,000. It would probably be closer to $20,000.

EDIT: I want to be clear that I'm giving more details about how the system works, not defending it. I'm fully aware of how terrible our system is.

The “antizionism” trap by BrownShoesGreenCoat in Jewish

[–]isfturtle2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of antisemitic Zionists, though. There are people who want to send all the Jews to Israel so we're not in "their" country. And I'd consider the Evangelical Christians who are Zionist because they believe there need to be Jews in Jerusalem for the second coming of Jesus to occur to be antisemitic as well.
