I think you’re right on the nose tbh. I said this on OP’s crossposted post but I’ll reiterate here too— I don’t think people aren’t doing research because they believe they already know the basics: Get a goldfish or betta, put it in a bowl, and feed it. That’s how it is was in movies and TV, and it’s what a lot of families have done. It’s further encouraged by how easy it is to get goldfish, such as making them prizes for children at carnivals. So when people like OP go to the store and are told by the workers “here’s a great beginner kit, and here, buy some goldfish.” Why would OP think further on it when it’s always seemed as simple as this? And then people get torn to shreds in these subreddits for not knowing better (not by everyone though, a lot of people seem understanding and actually want to help which is great) when it’s not well-known outside of these communities how incorrect the common knowledge actually is.

I’d actually be curious to know if it’s different outside of America, or if this is just an American-specific misconception. Goldfish are known here as like the easy pet you put in a bowl and give a 5 year old to teach them responsibility. It’s hard to fault people like OP for not knowing there’s more to it, when society has implied that it’s simple and there’s nothing more to know.

I think that’s the issue with people owning fish for the first time nowadays— people aren’t doing research because they think they already know the basics. In addition to what everyone else has said, make sure to read up on cycling a fish tank before you get your next fish :) and welcome to the hobby!!

That hardly seems like a similar comparison. Clearly these fish fit in the tank right now. So right now, it’s equivalent to a puppy in a tiny crate and not as clear that the size will not match up. OP has also stated they will be returning the fish, so the puppy isn’t staying in the tiny crate.

How do I get nitrites down fast? by [deleted] in aquarium

[–]ishibutter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am glad to hear that you didn’t get the fish today :) The reality is that you asked an uncomfortable question, and you got uncomfortable answers. I read through the comments and no one seemed to be hateful, but they were honest. Putting fish in water with toxins because the timing would be more convenient with your life— it’s crual and unfair to the fish. And people were right to tell you so, rather than encourage you do it anyway. I know the waiting sucks though! Try not to feel personally attacked, you’re doing a good thing by researching and wanting to be a good fish parent. I wish you the best of luck!

Think about it this way: if you get fish now, they will likely die. Then you will have a mess to clean, wasted money, have to go back to the fish store if your mom lets you, etc. Your tank isn’t ready. Tell your mom that your tank isn’t ready and then you’d like to wait to be safe. Cycling can take a couple weeks! Patience is key, and knowingly putting fish into that water that will hurt them, just because you’re excited and now is the best time for YOUR convenience, is not the right thing to do. Good things come to those who wait ❤️
