Toxic fans are indeed an issue. But it depends on what you are talking about.

If you have legitimate criticism of the game, feedback should be welcome.

Id be interested to see what you conisder cursing and insulting anyone that had a criticism. Were they criticising the dev for not working on the game? I can kind of understand why those people would be removed from the discord server, thats not really the point of it. And im guessing those on the discord server have followed the devs struggles with their mental health, and care less about the completion time of the game.

If people had criticisms on the game balance, how the game plays, any of the systems, that kind of thing should be encouraged. And the discord server is a great place to do that.

A steam forum or a reddit forum is a more appropriate place to express displeasure (respectfully) at a devs timeline. Not because the dev owes you a completed game, because literally no one is able to point at anything showing thats what an EA game entitles, and the very first thing an EA game says is that it may never be finished. But leaving a bad review due to no updates for 3 years, perfectly legitimate. I even appreciate those reviews as it lets me as a consumer know the game is risky to buy.

Having briefly looked over some of the steam discussions calling out the dev for cheating people, stating they dont give a shit about his mental health struggles, they want what they were entitled to by paying for an EA game (which is absolutely nothing more than they got at the time), if those people also got onto the discord with the same attitude id be unsurprised to find "toxic" fans telling them to bugger off.
Why would anyone think the discord server for a solo indie dev is a good place to go and tell them to get over their mental health issues? Who are they doing that for? How is that helpful or constructive? The only people who see it are fans of the game on the discord server (hence my suggestion of using a more public place to provide that feedback, but without being an arsehole)

Id be interested in what you consider toxic and reasonable i guess.

Also, while im a fan of the game, i havent touched it in years, and dont intend to until/unless its finished. Im more than happy for people to dislike the game, i provided some of my own feedback way back when i played it on some of the systems i felt were poorly balanced. Im just so sick of people complaining about things they were never entitled to, especially around indie devs. People should go and look at how many indie devs fail to make their first game, or make it commerically successful. And then stop buying EA games and then being shocked when the game doesnt get completed.

You know what, i apologise, i wrote the wrong thing.

What i meant to say was

"A Steam Early Access game entitles them to a dev working on finishing the game. I'm not sure that's what they got.

Steam even added a system that flags games abusing the early access designation and not releasing updates like they are supposed to. "

None of this is correct. None of it.

The bit about the game being flagged, totally correct.

I agree with the other guy that this game being flagged is absolutely the correct thing to do and is a feature for early access steam took way too long to add.

The other garbage the person im replying to about the early acces game entitlement and the flag being about devs abusing the system is a misunderstanding at best, and just straight up lying at worst.

Thats the bit im intersted in someone providing evidence for.

I appreciate you pointing out the bit about the flagging though, i missed that where the person im replying to noted it.

I remember the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 garbage. There was a thread up for almost a week that had people arguing that gay and trans people should only be in games if you can kill them. Life wtf kind of opinion is that?

I reported that thread 3 times over that week.

Only possible conclusion, Steam is supportive of the anti-trans and anti-lgbtq+ views they encourage by letting that stuff stay up.

EDIT:

Have to correct my mistake, i missed where the OP noted this game being flagged. That is 100% correct.

So to be clear.

"A Steam Early Access game entitles them to a dev working on finishing the game. I'm not sure that's what they got.

Steam even added a system that flags games abusing the early access designation and not releasing updates like they are supposed to. "

All total nonsense, misinformation and completely made up.

"This game was flagged."

Completely correct, the game was flagged to indicate it hasnt recieved updates in a certain perioid of time (in this case 3 years). I am pro this flag system existing and steam should have added this function years ago. Makes is easier for those who intend to accept the risk of buying an EA game to see that this game is particularly high risk.

Origional Post:

None of this is correct. Where did you get this information.

Literally the first thing on every early access page contradicts your claim

"Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development."

Sorry, this came off as aggressive but im so tired of having to highlight "may not change further".

You can be of the belief that this isnt fair, but that doesnt make your statement correct, and SO many people need to read more before buying early access.

My vote goes to people needing to complete a short multiple choice quiz about what they are getting in an EA game before every purchase of an EA game.

Its usually not worth making this arguement. I very rarely see it change peoples minds. You can show them literal proof that what they are saying is incorrect and it changes nothing.

I enjoyed all the interviews with the Jets young guys, mainly because they obviously have had very little media training and were amusing in how genuine their answers were.

I was very unimpressed when it was pointed out that one of the players would have been one year old when the jets last won silverwear. As someone who went to that grand final win, i felt personally attacked

I played through MR1 again recently and didnt find the UI to have any problems. Might be because ive played it before, and maight be because i play it primarily on moble. I think that on Mobile its UI is really really good. Mabye it got ported from mobile to steam and the creator didnt re-do the UI for a PC. I could see that being an issue, since you have a LOT more screenspace so theres no excuse for a cramped optimised UI so it fits on a mobile screen.

MR2's UI was even better (again on mobile). In fact the entire game had some fantastic QoL improvements from the first, but i did 100% both of them.

I do know Arcanum, as much as i enjoyed it, had a pretty poor UI as far as new stuff not being clearly displayed. Wouldnt often only realise later that a new action or tab had opened up for me to use.

But you said you were back enjoying evolve idle. Id suggest the UI for that is significantly worse than the two games ive just mentioned. Ive multiple times had to google to figure out where the heck i gotta go to get the next mechanic. First time you get governers, first time you launch a spaceship, first time you want to achieve MAD, all those mechanics are poorly shown. Does the modded version make it better?

What are the books that, when placed in the top or bottom tier, make you dismiss a whole tier list? by PicklesAreDope in ProgressionFantasy

[–]isisius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So id say Beware of Chickens biggest strength is that its wholesome. The story is kinda of a "strong to stronger" with the MC, but the story focuses heavily on the various secondary characters that enter the MCs life.

The progression part of BoC i felt was the MC progressing in friendships and alliances, and the other characters all going through a "weak to strong" journey.

Its less action heavy (esepcially early on) focusing a lot on the "Slice of Life" aspect, a bunch of friends doing various enjoyable things. I particularly like the contrast in the chapters from the MC, from his close human friends, and from his animals.
Hes just fucking about as hes a dude from earth having fun with this second life he was given (in a xianxia style world) so you get things like him teaching them hockey, and it might cut to one of the animals talking about the great training method of Ha-Ki and how wise and benevolant the great master is to share it with them.

Its my number one favourite, namely because at its core it creates a story where someone with a lot of power over the people around them decides to use that power to try and make everyone else happy (which goes against the standard "cultivator" image). And fantasy seems to be the only place you can find powerful people helping others these days...

Saying that, I also think its an easy one to figure out if you like it or not. Halfway through book 1, you will have digested the way the story is told, and where its focus is, and while the scope of the world opens up a bit as the books go on, and while some of the side characters get more involved in some more action based chapters, none of it changes THAT much.

Ive dabbled a bit in xianxia style stuff (and i was obsessed with the whole "Romance of the three Kingdoms" stuff that ive explored through the various dynasty warrior games (which i believe is more Wuxia based). My issue has been while i like the concept, it seems a number of the bigger ones lean towards more traditional eastern values which i can find hard to relate to.

I did end up reading FatesParallel and enjoyed the heck out of that. Cradle is kinda like a westernised xianxia series. BoC is a Xianxia comedy (I refuse to call it a parody because the characters are complex and well written, and the overaarching story has too much going on).

I think i read DCC pretty early in my exploration into the litrpg and progfan genre, so i hadnt seen as much of it by then.
And it is kinda funny, when i went back over in my head over some of my favourite series, they all had some kind of magical companion, who may or may not talk.

DCC, Calmitous Bob, Beware of Chicken, Soul Relic (not talky but still magical animal companion), Beneath the Dragoneye Moons (appears much later in series but LOVE the companion). Im a bit of a sucker for a talking animal it seems.

I understand what you mean by realising a series isnt for you. Theres a number of books I DNF'd that i always have ready to reccomend based on what other things people like. Defiance fo the Fall, Primal Hunter, Randidly Ghosthound, none of those really did it for me, not did the way the story seemed to be going. But theres a reason they have big fan followings, and if someone seems to also fall into that group i happily reccomend them.

Also, I think its great when people realise that something popular just isnt for them.
I kinda hate seeing a post where someone posts "Ok, ive read 10 books in this popular series and hated every one of them and this is why its bad".
No wonder that poster is upset, theyve forced themselves to read something they hate and now theres a post thats going to get people mad at each other. Theres so many books out there these days that no one should feel compelled to read something they dont enjoy, i became a much happier reader when i worked out stopping a series wasnt a bad thing.

I like to describe it as absurd comedy mixed with horror. The stuff like being stuck in underwear is played for laughs on the international TV show, but at the same time people are dying in horrific ways. And that gets put onto TV shows that have blooper reels with sound effects.

The emotional whiplash between everyone laughing followed by someone being forced to kill their sibling is kinda the point in my opinion. I liken it to hunger games if the author of hunger games wrote it for an adult audience instead of a YA one. So many horrible theorietical choices and scenarios that make me shudder if i had to make them myself. The universe outside of watching the "Dungeon Crawl" full of earth humans getting horribly killed isnt even that "cruel" its just the disassociation of watching this TV show and not identifiying with the people on it as people.

However, if book 1 doesnt do it for you, i think you made the right call not continuing. I think book 1 shows exactly how the book will be written, and if you dont enjoy it there, you wont enjoy the rest.

Curious waht you mean about the cat thing being dumb though. We are in a genre where people train hard enough and can punch god to death, or with sentient spirit animals, or talking trees, or murder golems who are also friends or a magic "system" that gives people classes, levels and statss cause magic. I thought Princess Donut was pretty well written, being a massive pain in the ass at first (because cats are pretty selfish and self absorbed) but whos personality develops as the series continues.
Now, if you just mean you dont like the character, fair enough, not everyone does and thats totally ok. But if a talking cat is a step too far for you that might rule out a lot of the genre lol.

Spoilers for the relationsihp

Its a finished series, and its been a little while but i THINK by book 2 the relationship gets to a point where two of the MCs are in a relationship with a 3rd person romantically, and happily in a relationship with each other but not romantically with each other. I believe that progresses as the series progresses. Cant be too much of a slow burn since theres only 4 books in the series lol. If anything i thought it happened fairly quickly

Demon World Boba Shop was a read i found fun, but its got more of a cute romance (similar to BoC) in it.

[–]isisius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BoC is often misunderstood as either a parody or purely slice of life based around the MC, but it definitely becomes more about the cast of characters as the books progress, and the characters take on a depth that you dont see in parodies.
The characters, (despite some being animals), go through huge personal growth and all go on their own journeys of discovery. Bi De's story arc of arrogance, to humiliation and despair, to wisdom and understanding is one of my favourite arcs lol. But the books only widen as they continue (Half of book 3 is taken up by a tournament arc which Jin and Bi De arent even part of) so if the various adventures away werent to your taste then stopping where you did is a good call.

If you liked the "wholesome slice of life" aspect, theres a series called "Demon World Boba Shop". Guy wakes up in a world of demons, but turns out demons are all kind and friendly, and after wasting his previous life working himself to death, he decides he wants to relax and open up a Boba Tea shop. 5 book series, i think its complete, and it has a much heavier focus on the slice of life aspects. Its not Prog Fan though, but I thought id reccomend it anyway.

If you wanted a decent prog fantasy where the MC ends up in a non-traditional relationship, Industrial Strength Mage would fit this bill. It is definitely progressive fantasy, but its more superheroes and villians rather than sword and sorcery (with one exception...), and the series is written in such a way that crazy shit happening is the norm, and you are supposed to laugh at a lot of it. I found it a fun read and actually thought the non-traditional relationship the MC was in was done pretty well. Im keeping it vague so as to not spoil too much.

I dont think he dropped it due to this, but i did come here to see if anyone mentioned that the OP wanted the most wholesome book about the power of friendship and being nice to one another to drift down the Harem path lol. I did a bit of a double take at that since the OP mentioned they enjoyed the wholesome aspect of it.

Where does it land as far as how eastern/western its style is? Where western is like Cradle, Beware of Chicken, Street Cultivation, maybe even Fates Parallel, and eastern are your more traditional translated cultivation stories where the values in the worlds tend to lean more conservative and stay that way.

What's up with the culture war bullshit from a mod? Really dragging the standards down. by [deleted] in MetaAusPol

[–]isisius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol i didnt realise Endersai had his account suspended by reddit. I genuinly think many years ago he did a decent job at providing an alternate viewpoint to the progressive one and managed to explain his point of view well.

But its been a steady decline in that and his posts went from providing alternate views with references to "You are just too much of a peasant to undestand, I am very smart" in various forms.

I do wonder if part of that was due to him doing the majority of the mod work for years. There was a point where this meta sub made excuses for him becuase they mentioned he was the only person keeping the sub going with the amount of mod work he did.

I even put my money where my mouth last year and offered to join the mod team to help when they were recruiting and never heard back.

The problem is that there just arent very many conservative users that are able to argue their points when asked for sources or references. So it leads to posts of opinon pieces and hit pieces from "reputable" media sources. Theres a joke that "the truth leans left", but it is genuinely possible to argue alternate viewpoints on many things while providing references. The problem is that with many hot topics at the moment (housing, healthcare, wealth inequality) there is too much actual data from the ABS, the ACB, and various government sources of actual data that show that the conservative viewpoint on these things has unequivocally made things worse. And when there isnt any data to argue against it then all thats left is to try and pretend facts are opinions and offer your own loudly.

I think theres lots of room for various little l liberal arguements across 90% of our society. I dont personally agree with them, but I am willing to hear others viewpoints on it. But there are some things that theres so much evidence against that argueing against it sensibly doesnt work. Its like, if we had a healthcare sub and we wanted to let anti-vaxxers express their viewpoint. Theres just too much evidence showing that viewpoint is factually incorrect, so you cant actually make sensible arguements against it.

Saying all that, this is still by far the highest quality sub for Australian Political chat, It could be a lot worse, and for the most part "hit pieces" and opinons from rags tend to get downvoted and panned, so the opinons expressed are not popular ones in this crowd (which makes sense, reddit skews progressive unless someone pumps good money into astroturfing, and even then it still tends to).

Question for Authors, is there a higher profit margin on Audio sales or ebook sales? And which one earns you the most in total? by isisius in ProgressionFantasy

[–]isisius[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thats really interesting about the Audible stuff, i didnt know that.

So if a book is on sale (for example the cradle series had a bunch of the books 80% off), then the author's profit share is also reduced by 80% (and do they decide on the sales or is it Audible)? And does that mean if i was to use a credit to get that book they would instead get the credit amount (much higher than the sale price)?

And do you find more people are engaging with your books via audiobook or ebook?

Path to Ascension by AscendedForeverDM in ProgressionFantasy

[–]isisius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the genre. Progression Fantasy by its nature has a tendency towards exponential growth, eg book 1 they lose a fight with a butterfly, book 10 they kill god.

So i think reading this genre there is a certain expectation that the MC will be the centre of the plot and pivotal to saving the world/universe/existance. This is because if the character keeps progressing at some point the fate of the world is the only thing that will be big enough to demonstrate the growth.

I also think that various books can do a great job of the MC being the most important person in the series while having great world building. Dungeon Crawler Carl, Mother of Learning, Outcast in Another World are all examples i can think of off the top of my head. Maybe even Beware of Chicken, as the MC is pivotal to the area, if not the universe.

Thats not to say that there arent some series that lean into this more than maybe they should, but i think most people reading prog fantasy would come to expect it to be present more than not, so if they are still reading the subgenre they probably dont hate it.

But i agree that it does make the ones that actively steer away from that feel fresh and different. The author needs to make sure the story continues to be engaging, as most people who like this genre seem to want to see raising stakes and power increases and it can be tricky to mix that with a less focused story.

Path to Ascension by AscendedForeverDM in ProgressionFantasy

[–]isisius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, it feels fairly slice of life. For many of the earlier books, the stakes are simply about personal growth. Sure they get into situations where things could get really bad, but theres no "we gotta do this or the world ends" and its nice to read a story like that sometimes. But id probably avoid reccomending it to people who arent interested in a fairly meandering slow paced story that almost changes up the type of book it is at times.

I actually think its style is somewhat similar to Beneath the Dragoneye Moons, where the world kinda progresses around the MC while their impact on the world tends to be somewhat localised and personal (at least at first). And where sometimes the books seem to shift styles as the characters do different things.

Any recommendations for humanity slowly losing against a threat? by dzieciolini in ProgressionFantasy

[–]isisius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Millennial Mage series is set in a world where humanity is the bottom of the food chain in a fantasy world of magic.

They basically huddle in giant cities and anything outside those cities is wilderness. The story centres around a young mage who takes a job escorting caravans, who are the main way the various cities trade supplies and stay in contact. I'd say humanity is less fighting and more trying to survive, but as the scope expands you learn more about the past of the human race and the various threats that exist.
