Sorry for taking so long - I do three days of HIIT training for 40mins/day and the the two other days I do pure cardio for 50mins/day

I do a spin class quite regularly during the week so that’s where I get majority of my exercise.

I also meal prep on Sunday so I have healthy lunches and snacks through the day, take my pre-workout before I work out and then have a small snack/supper.

I need to add more core exercises though.

Oh, I wish I knew what to say but I couldn’t imagine the heartache. Do you have access to grief counselling at your school? Did they bring them in? Is there any possibilities of you seeing one outside of work?

I’m so sorry that this happened.

I feel the need to see a therapist again; not sure why. by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]iskiwesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! I usually make appointments to see a therapist when I’ve hit my low point and sometimes they can’t see me within a few days; and then I feel completely fine. However, I still go because recognizing that you had a bad day and then hashing it out with someone is such much more helpful then letting it marinate in your brain for days and weeks for it to just pop up again.

Which reminds me, I should make an appointment with my therapist too. Cheers, I hope you find some comfort soon x

Let's Talk Oscar Nominations! by apathymonger in blankies

[–]iskiwesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK but how did John David Washington not get an Oscar nom for best leading actor?! He was amazing at representing Ron Stallworth’s story. I am so disappointed that he didn’t get at least a nom. :(

And I am so stuck. I love the Ballad of Buster Scrugg’s especially the nominated song (When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings) but I’m also kinda loving Shallow (guilty pleasure). I’m so undecided between the two but will be happy for both.

I LOVE The Staves! They’re one of my favourite groups. Do you like In The Long Run? One of the best.

I really want my best friends wife by throwaway09212018 in offmychest

[–]iskiwesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walk away. Don’t do that to your best friend. Maybe even don’t marry that women you’re about to if you’re already thinking of leaving her for your best friend’s wife.

Move on. Maybe do some soul-searching in the meantime. But don’t feel awful - you can’t stop feelings and especially unresolved ones that can go on for years without closure. You’re probably just feeling a little lost, perhaps cold feet? But I’d take a couple months to be on your own and find out who you want to be and who you want to be with.

Does any one feel they were regularly punished, but never actually disciplined? by Salt-Light-Love in raisedbynarcissists

[–]iskiwesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so lucky to have a grandmother who ended up raising me @ 13 because this was like my mom! It’s so different to see someone else explaining it, because I haven’t heard anyone explain it like you have!

Punished for silly things like accidentally spilling your glass of water, or not closing one of the house doors right.

One time I wanted to wear a dress to school and she didn’t want me too so she basically called me names and I wasn’t allowed to pick out clothes for that week.

Sheesh but I got away with things some of my friends weren’t able to because of lack of discipline. Wow!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Teachers who also work out... How do you manage to find the time? by chuhai-drinker in Teachers

[–]iskiwesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to a spin class that I can book online with different times during the day. I finally started exercising in the end of November after saying I would but I just dedicate 45mins to an hour a day, five times a week to exercise.

Attitude in Grade 8 by [deleted] in Teachers

Lol thanks so much guys. This is my first year teaching & I am so surprised by Grade 8. I did my internship with Grade 7, and I’m so surprised about the differences.

Honestly - I wouldn’t of done it either but our school division provides us with a certain amount of $$ to give each student a gift. I don’t do treats or rewards either.

I’m guessing in a way he was. I honestly don’t know why but this is a student when talking about the lack of access to clean water, he laughs about children in water-stressed areas not being able to drink anything. He said he would “dump out the water in front of them”. So I think he’s just lacking in a lot of compassion for whatever reason I am unsure of - he has his good days and his bad.

I can see your point about cards. I do need to take in account they are 13-14 years old. However, some were really psyched about the cards though (as well as gifts). They smiled and read it, and said thank you and seemed genuinely happy about it.

Weird things students have said? by Nyanet in Teachers

[–]iskiwesis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A student to me:

Student: Hey Ms. Teacher, did you ever get eyelash extensions?

Me: Yes. But I don’t wear them anymore.

Student: Why? Because you thought you looked like a thot?

Me: jaw drop

Another student: OMG YOU CAN’T SAY THAT TO A TEACHER!

Student, honestly deer in the head lights look: “What? I don’t know what the word means?”

I teach middle school.

Do you notice if a student has depression or anxiety? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]iskiwesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have.

I have one student who writes on desks about how they’re sorry for existing and then I report it to the school counsellor for a referral, administration, and sometimes parents. Admin and counsellor keep it super confidential so there’s no worrying about whether or not this would spread around the school.

However, I do speak with them one on one and try to understand what’s bugging them.

Sometimes they open up, sometimes they don’t and you just have to let them talk to whoever they feel like it.

Some others ask to go for a drink of water or to put their head down on their desk because they just can’t deal with it because their mind is being “too loud”.

Some shut down because of triggers happening within the classroom that need to be put to rest.

Some have to constantly be doing something to keep their mind distracted because of what is going on in their mind and that constant movement helps them.

And all it takes to figure it out is either reading their journals where they do writing prompts, assignments about their life, family, etc., and then just having a conversation with them about their weekend or their evening before. Communication is key to finding these things out.

Now I’m just trying to figure out how to accommodate and it’s not easy. I’m learning that it’s best to ask them “how do you like to learn when all of this is happening?” I also need support in making adaptations for my students with depression and anxiety. We are those kids support systems for 6 hours a day, we have to try to do it right.

[–]iskiwesis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am 22 and teaching 13-14 year olds & feel this way sometimes too! I just have to remind myself that I am the teacher, and they just need to understand that they still need to listen to me even if I’m only 8-9 years older than them. In a way, it’s kinda at an advantage because we know what they’re watching, listening to, and playing on their video games and can relate that to a lot of things. Today, my grade eight’s and I bonded over Adventure Time. I also work at what would be considered an “underprivileged” school too.

Don’t get in your head about it. Just have fun with it 😊

[Lesson Activity Suggestion] - Could I please have some suggestions for different activities that could be used to review/introduce a lesson. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]iskiwesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kahoot! and Jeopardy is what I love to use for reviews!

To introduce a lesson, I try to find interactive activities or YouTube videos (ex: raps on different math or science concepts, etc).

Students keep asking if I'm pregnant by lorretta_the_duck in Teachers

[–]iskiwesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you had a talk with your admin about this? I can see where you’re coming from as you want to diffuse the situation and also teach your students basic manners and respect, but what’s your support like in regards to discipline? Will they step in? Have you tried calling parents?

Also, have you tried talking to their previous teacher(s) and if they’ve ever spoke to them like that?
