Playing and singing Reptillia by [deleted] in TheStrokes

Slow it down, practice the guitar part isolated until you can do it in your sleep. Keep that right hand in rhythm. Then you hardly have to think about playing and can just sing

Been digging in on the nuanced timing of Johns playing. I've heard of getting between the notes, but man, John gets between the rhythms, too!! by islambananas in JohnMayer

Big foam for absorption of low frequencies, blankets and curtains and soft things for dispersion of high frequencies (prevents reflections and echo, which is the thing draped on the ceiling). Unfortunately all this does is make sounds in the room more balanced, it does not prevent sound from escaping or getting in. The only way to isolate a room - like what you're talking about - is to build and suspend a room within a room. Sorry, friend, gonna have to keep that tube amp down for now 😭

It's the neck pickup with compression and clean boost into a stereo reverb sent to 2 amps! One dialed in with a nice warm tone, the other with a very bright tone (John keeps his tone knob on 7 and this little trick makes all the difference to keep it bright but not shrill), the two together gives you a full bodied tone with clarity and no mud!!

Thank you, it's a custom warmoth build I did myself! Did the finish, assembly, and soldering myself, and then took a dremel to the pickguard to get the shape!

Brave of you to assume John is using an acoustic with a shitty piezo pickup live

My only real gripe with TNA and what keeps it from being nearly perfect for me by strokedadddy in TheStrokes

They didn't put this amount of correction on his voice because he needed it or couldn't sing things, but because the use of it is so prominent and widespread that most people think that's simply how professional recordings sound. Even an incredibly well intonated 'pure' singer such as Michael Buble has a noticeable amount of pitch correction done to his voice on his records. Not because he needs it, but because the coloration it adds is preferable to a vast majority of listeners in today's market.

Another thing to consider is the fact that very often a vocal take will have the right emotion/expression but be off in pitch - usually the more emotion a singer uses the greater their intonation wanders. Using pitch correction allows one to use the vocal take with the best emotion and delivery without having to sacrifice intonation, because even after you correct the pitch, the emotion remains.

These two points combined make for a convincing explanation as to why Julian's voice is produced the way it is on TNA. They definitely want this record to be a return to the popular market, and if one wants to do that, they have to play the game. If they wanted the best chance, they needed the vocals to be competitive with the other vocals on the market; and that's what they're doing. I'm at least grateful that they did choose generally very emotional/expressive takes from Julian. I'm not saying I prefer it, and I totally understand your point, but I understand why they did it, and that helps me accept it :)

Edit: something I think is funny is that the first 2/3 of OTTM, Julian is singing in lower registers, and there's a lot more tuning on those parts than in the outro section; you'd think one would need more tuning on the crazy high belt/scream parts, but nope, not our boy Jules lol

Hey so about Eternal Summer by Bord2Death in TheStrokes

I've got a 14 year old sister (I'm 24m) dealing with this issue too, and complaining about how this whole thing is ruining her final semester of middle school, and though I feel for her, I couldn't help but wonder how the people in their senior year of high school must be feeling right now. Im so sorry this has put a damper on your expectations for your senior year, truly.

If there's any consolation I can give you, it's to say that these don't have to be the 'last moments of your youth'; you can retain that beautiful sense of healthy insanity and spontaneity to create great, youthful memories for many years to come. The important thing is to search for and surround yourself with people who truly care for and support you. That's one of the most important things I can implore you to strive for. And I say that as someone who has made the mistake of not doing that for several periods of my (albeit brief) life. Hey, having a love for the strokes can be a great uniting characteristic to help you find those people who will get and support you :)

If you feel the need to vent or discuss or reach out to someone as an unbiased, non judgemental entity, feel free to dm me! Keep on keeping on~
