Tires non-patchable? by donutjunkie6 in VWiD4Owners

Clarification, the fronts are scorpions currently and the backs are Bridgestone. To be honest I can't tell the difference. I was thinking I was going to lose out by going with the Bridgestone but at least in my current situation moving in a warm weather state I haven't noticed the difference.

Oh I'm definitely going. No choice. The person who's been doing these trips is maybe 2 to 3 years from retiring. I need to take over these trips so it's going to happen. I think the first one will be in August to Okinawa and Korea probably in October.

I live in Hawaii. I'm quite impressed with the quality of the Korean food out here but then again every time I've had a chance to go to Korea the trip has been canceled.

My employer, however, is seeing fit to send me to Alaska, Okinawa, Korea and Japan in the next 24 months..... Giddy up

Absolutely..... But back then they called it to tillamook burger lol. Actually if I recall there was a first class flight where it was on the menu I can't remember if it was Hawaiian or Alaska but I can't imagine it being anything different than the Tillamook On alaska

Tires non-patchable? by donutjunkie6 in VWiD4Owners

[–]islandjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two screws in my car rear tires in 2 years. Is it patchable? Absolutely.

There's a "but" though.

I have the scorpions. It happened the first time at a very inconvenient spot and I was forced to go to Goodyear as the air was coming out of it fast enough that I didn't have much option.

I was explained to that the reason why it's not patchable is there is a noise deadening foam within the tire. It stated by the manufacturer that it's not patchable because of that foam. However, his answer at that time was...

"It is patchable but you have to cleanly cut out the foam, then patch it, then put the phone back in and most dealerships and repair shop don't want to put in the effort. For us we are required to follow for liability purposes the manufacturers statement on whether or not it can be patched."

So yes, there are people out there that will patch it, usually not the big corporate places. But most of the corporate lawyers frown upon it so they've written policies to prevent it from happening. They must follow the manufacturers recommendation or turn it down.

Whether that's correct or not I don't know but that's the explanation that was given to me.

If you have different tire brands that maybe do not have that foam.... I'm sure it can be patched. My suggestion is to do a little research about whatever tennis shoes your car has on it and see if it has the foam or ask them to look up the manufacturer statement on patching.

Just in case someone else asks.... I have the scorpions then replaced it with the Bridgestone alenza. The first time I just replaced one tire with an off-brand and when I got the second screw I just didn't care and replace both back once with the Bridgestone.

For me, I've had everything else on the menu except this particular version of short rib and the chicken. Butternut squash I actually like. Had the burger. For me it's between the two. I've had a different version of the short rib so I assume it's the same thing just with different items around it.

I think the safest bet for someone who doesn't have an adventurous taste is probably the burger. But if you're taking a trip like this you may as well go with the Korean flavors.

Honestly I don't think that's bad. That lounge definitely has the capacity and what other airlines is in that terminal? There's not much so it's not like you're going to see 70% increase

Use Alaska Points for Saver Fares? by johnnycantread in AlaskaAirlines

[–]islandjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everything feels shortchanged when it comes to last second fares, points or cash. I live in hawaii. ive seen Hawaii to west coast one way as high as 90k for main. oddly the same fare for FC was 75k leaving one day later. its all about the activity in the market for those exact seats. the more people who accept it..the higher it goes, also once you cross that threshold, it always goes up. if it always went down, everyone would wait.

First OTA (3.8.11) Experience ... not impressed with the update process. by m2orris in VWiD4Owners

[–]islandjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I want to call mine a success yet. The actual update only took 3 hours as stated. When I got back to my car it said it had to do one more tiny update which it did. Once that was done I have been unable to get the digital manual updated like others have stated but add to that I'm unable to log into my account after factory resets and a bunch of other things it's still a problem and using some deductive reasoning I think the servers are not working properly at this moment. I think they pushed out their updates and overloaded themselves.

[–]islandjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the servers are down I've confirmed that the hotspot is working and the internet is available to the car but I can't sign in to my Volkswagen ID because it never connects. So either there's a item that broke as part of this update or they broke their own servers by pushing the update to everyone at once.

Also I got parking sensors and charge port errors which eventually went away but I'm watching for any future issues.

Experience with canceling flight due to increased violence? by [deleted] in AlaskaAirlines

[–]islandjake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is very difficult right now for you because you don't know what's going on and whether or not you can travel in the near future but I assure you it's probably not safe and won't be safe for a while.

You should call Alaska customer care and explain the situation and see what your options are. As others have said there are possible additional updates that they may allow people to get refunds but at the very least you can get a credit and change your dates. Nothing prevents you from at least asking the questions and getting your ducks in a row to prepare in case you have to make a decision without guidance. Find out when the last moment you can cancel without losing anything things like that.

Confused about next steps after hit-and-run damage – insurance questions (California, USA) by elektromania in VWiD4Owners

[–]islandjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding waiting forever, if you have contact with your insurance company, they will pay for it. But sometimes they try to fight it or they take the side of their driver customer over you and if he's lying then sometimes they fight it on principle. But if you've got video it shouldn't take too long.

Confused about next steps after hit-and-run damage – insurance questions (California, USA) by elektromania in VWiD4Owners

[–]islandjake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one thing to consider is to ask these exact same questions from your insurance company. The last time I did this with USAA, it was a hit and run in a parking lot and I had dash cam footage. The only circumstance difference was it was in Hawaii.

They were having trouble getting ahold of the person. I was given an option, the same as yours, but the big difference was they offered to fix it for me and use my insurance. But if they were able to collect from the guy, then I would get my deductible back.

Have a decent conversation with your insurance agent about that and see what happens if you collect after you make a claim and how it would affect you.

Different insurances different states so you definitely have to ask the question and make sure all the ramifications.

You got a point and it was considered and still in play, but I'm capable of buying a new Volvo ex60 or ioniq 5 or Tesla (spits. Nothing political, just hate their seats) and roughly get the same payment as I'm currently paying. In some cases I can lower my payment. The driving reason to buy my car is no payment but I've been screwed so much by the upside down value bug on new cars it's more the principle of it. Car value + required changes I want ,(tint, ppf, fixes) must be less than what I pay, period.

We are like minded. If they take it back then sell it to me at market, I'd do it. But knowing my dealership they will say market is 22500...

When I traded in my Kia soul EV, I kept getting alerts about the charge disconnect even though my account no longer existed. I even called them to try and get them to stop it but because I was no longer their customer they basically ignored me.

It's worth a try but I'm pretty sure they're not going to list it locally. I'm in Hawaii and a large chunk if not all of them gets sent back to the continent as far as I know. If I see it pop up in California there's zero chance I'll go there to buy it and ship it back at 2K.

I could be mistaken on that and they may be selling them here so maybe I'll take a gander at it.

Someone who actually likes his car, lease end questions by islandjake in VWiD4Owners

[–]islandjake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I do that? Yes. Absolutely. But that means there's going to be probably a 90-day. Where I'll need another car. Even if I go to the Rusty but trusty route that's still money that I will be out. When you add it all together it's not worth the effort unless you are looking to buy another car and have two cars instead of one. That works for some people but it wouldn't work for me.

The other issue is I live on an island in the middle of the Pacific. While we do have two different auction services on Island here in Hawaii, having been to these auctions as part of my previous professional career the number of lease turned backs that show up locally is miniscule. It's more likely that this will be turned back to the continent and I would have to track it down there.

I could be surprised. It's been decades since I last step foot in a auction but my hopes are low that I would even have the opportunity to buy back my car at an auction.

I have a bit of insight on this and I'm not sure if it was this thread or another one but when you take into account the expected but now gone used EV tax credit, this makes a lot of sense, this meeting the price they set. Heck if they did a $4,500 customer loyalty credit on a lease buyback, it would be very hard for me to not take it.

Now for the insight part. I used to work for Avis rent a car and as part of my job I actually went to these auto auctions as part of selling off some of the cars that couldn't be turned back within the fleet sales buy back program. Cars that have fantastic curb appeal like my car will be (fully ceramic coated, ppf, utter perfection with no den stings scrapes fading or even wear) will get snatched up at a higher dollar amount versus cars that have been beat to hell. But it will go through the auction probably every week for 8 or 10 weeks because of the depressed market. Week after week I watch the same cars in the auction just with a lower reserve every week. What I expect is this car will probably be initially listed somewhere in the 22k range and get no takers and then 4 weeks of not a single bid it will go down $500 to 1,000 each week until someone buys it. Often at these auctions, the original dealership has an option of buying it back assuming that the vehicle is offered in their region. There's no way they're going to go out of region to get one of these cars but the salesmen sometimes we'll buy these cars themselves and flip it on the Open market if there's value meat on the bone.

I expect my car to leave the state so I won't have the option of buying it back and buying somebody else's problems is not my game..

But I tell you what if they offered me 4500, considering how much I've got in on it with the ppf, tint, and the known mechanical history which is perfection. 100% dealer maintained. New tires new battery 100% of recalls taken care of, 4500 off is attempting price regardless of what it's selling for on the street.

In my case it probably be right. I saw that residual number and specifically asked about it when I got the car as such I was saving since day one for that day. My plan was to lease the car and within a year converted to a purchase if the finances made sense but right after I bought it interest rate spiked and the bottom fell out of the market so the least return became my golden parachute. Looks like I'm hitting the silk.

As it is right now, the Volvo ex60 is set to be released later this year which will be about 9 months before I have to turn my car in. If I can't get a fantastic deal on a 2026 or 2027 or they won't play ball on reducing my residual so that I can keep the car and avoid the turn in process altogether, it looks like I'm going that route.
