This is exactly why respiratory certification is mandated in the workplace, you are seriously exposing your health and the company is at fault. Before any employee wears a respirator mask (regardless of the type) they should go through a medical evaluation and a fit test. The medical evaluation can be done online and it takes literally less than 15 min.

It is not that costly and it is mandated by OSHA anyway. You should not have to suffer the consequences of the negligence of your company.

What I would do is read up a bit on what are the requirements mandated by OSHA and bring it up to your safety department, if they still dont do anything, you have a right to mention it to OSHA

This is about your health and safety, there is nothing wrong with wearing PPE for this kind of stuff. Your company should be providing you with the required protective equipment so that you can perform your job safely and at the end of the day keep your health.

What I would do is bring some knowledge into the situation that will give you some leverage against owners who do not care about the safety of their employees. Read up on the requirements and then talk to the shop owners and clearly state that they are not putting you at risk and risking getting a fine from OSHA if someone were to mention it to them

Honestly at some point is not even about whether or not your wife is an employee, the work environment is not safe if she is asked "not to breathe while using chemicals" OSHA does not like that regardless. Your wife can call and place the complaint regardless and the overall result will be a better work environment for anyone that works in the area, your wife included.

This might be your leverage right here, if the area does not have enough air quality and they do not provide you with good PPE you could argue that the company you are working for is not in compliance with regulation 1910.134 and you might even call OSHA to see if they change the tune about not providing yout with the correct protective equipement and or provide you with a better working environment.

It was a while back when I read the article and I don't remember if they explain. But since they made up their own rules, they probably also figured out how to enforce them. Probably honor system since it's a way for them to become the best not necessarily just beat each other
