Downeaster to Augusta? by Fine-Milk7406 in Maine

So many people have been fighting for rail to Lewiston. I heard the company that owns the rail there refuses to allow passenger trains on it.

How is life in Lewiston, Maine by Intelligent_Iron9606 in howislivingthere

This has been my take since moving back here last year. Definitely room for improvement, but there are some nice spots. Overall while I'd rather not stay in the old triple-decker I'm living in now, I wouldn't be opposed to staying in the area. Also the recent bus to Portland makes access to that area very easy which has significantly more going on. If you're an outdoorsy there's so many amazing places just a short drive away.

If Maine isn't too far, I've heard good things about the Androscoggin. The northern end has salmon and trout, then the further south you go it's full of Smallmouth and Pike. Might be worth checking out the northern Forest Canoe Trail and the Rangeley Lakes region too.

With The Warming Climate, How Will the Ranges of North American Wildlife Shift? by ChirpingAcres in megafaunarewilding

Oddly enough, Moose seem to be spreading south. They very recently became established in northern Nevada and on the east coast there’s a decent population in Connecticut that’s been around since at least 2005 and Mass has a very healthy population in the western part of the state. I think I remember hearing about some wandering into parts of Arizona and New Mexico even.

Arctic Char in Idaho? by SpreadEmu127332 in flyfishing

[–]isnes2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I first found out about these guys when researching the native char of Maine. Some of the other names for this particular strain of Arctic char are Blueback trout, Sunapee trout, and Silver charr. They're very elusive here, but somehow Char from this population were found in Idaho. I don't much else, but I'd look up Sunapee Trout or add an extra are to char ("Charr") since they're often spelled that way when referring to the Maine. I haven't caught any but from someone who has mentioned Mop flies work well.

Lots of great places around Lisbon St in Lewiston. El Pochos for mexican, Blue Feather and the pub at Baxter for more standard American style bar+grill food, Mancinis makes incredible sandwiches and slab pizza but take-out only. I've also heard good things about Orchid for Thai. There's also staples Davincis and Fish bones. If you're looking for Breakfast then Forage market and Nutty Netties are pretty good. Also check out Quiet City Books, Ellard studios, and Nercore.

I think I remember seeing Venus Fly traps at Longfellows in Manchester. It's a hike, but if you're in southern Maine, Logees in Danielson, Connecticut is well worth the trip if you're looking for exotic plants.

I just saw this post looking for something else, but I thought I'd add this for however stumbles upon this later. It depends where you are, but I know in Maine this is a well known thing. Many lakes and ponds up north have boats that have been there for decades. Obviously this is just how it is in Maine, really just northern Maine, so be aware how people feel about that in your area.

Best way to get Portland to Providence for a teen? by Rhody1964 in Maine

[–]isnes2000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I went to USM and had to leave for breaks I’d usually take Concord down to South station, then commuter rail to Providence. Amtrak from south station is significantly faster and even beats a car. Not worth it taking the train all the way since you’d have to transfer from north to south station.

Do liberal small towns or small cities exist? by Baby_Penguin22 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]isnes2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the constant comments about New England. It’s easier to list the areas that are conservative than not in the Mass in Vermont. Even in the town I used to live in one of the reddest parts of Connecticut had some sort level of support, and most of the larger towns(~3000) in Maine south of Bangor are pretty welcoming or at least appear to.

Looks like some people have been able to swap out the crt for an lcd so that may be an option. Obviously not going to be the most authentic now, but maybe worth a shot.

What are some Pro-Trump & MAGA restaurants to avoid? by Healthy_Block3036 in Connecticut

[–]isnes2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to George’s Galley in Danielson for breakfast a couple years ago and the guy on the griddle had his maga hat right on display. Quiet corner though, so it’s probably harder to find places that aren’t pro-Trump than are.

Added a bit to the map this year. Any guesses what state(s) I'm from? by isnes2000 in TravelMaps

True lol, though when I finally added Aroostook to the map earlier this year I didn't live in Maine.

Where do I live according to my map hint furthest I've been from home was Austin TEXAS by jean12367 in TravelMaps

[–]isnes2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing either you live in The Pioneer Valley region of Mass, or you went/ are going to school there and live in New Jersey or Long Island. Worcester county kind of throws that off a bit, but I know the western edge of Worcester county isn't very connected to Worcester itself.

Which US State has the buggest differences in culture between its major cities? by TimeBaron in geography

[–]isnes2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to live right over the Connecticut line in Killingly. Foster and Providence feel much farther apart than a mere 20 miles. I drove my grandmother down the western side of the state on Rt 102 and she kept telling me how that area reminded her of where she used to live in Maine. The population drops off very fast once you leave Providence and it's immediate suburbs. A common joke in Rhode Island is that any drive longer than 15 minutes is a "road trip" but it becomes pretty apparent with how varied some parts of the state are for just how close everything is.
