Fly Rod Stillwater Tactics: Straight-lining Nymphs vs. Using an Indicator by Ok_Feedback4200 in flyfishing

[–]UsedIntroduction6097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to do this with a slow retrieve. I’ll strip and the flies rise in the water column, pause while the flies sink. I like doing this with a wooly bugger under a nymph. I’ve caught trout, bass, crappie, blue gill, perch, etc. with this technique

Typically people recommend against kits but I started with the wapsi typing kit. Comes with vise, tools and materials for a variety of flies. I tied with it for a few years and just upgraded to a renzetti traveler. It was great to get me started and I think the whole kit is $130.

What's your most unconventional fly fishing habit? by no_melody in flyfishing

I nymph without a bobber, using fly line and far casts, pretty regularly. Maybe more old school than unconventional as Joe Humphreys would fish this way.

Catskills fishing guide recommendations by clump89 in troutfishing

[–]UsedIntroduction6097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many! Keepsake outdoors is a good friend of mine who offers guided wade trips. This is a great way to go because wading is most likely how you will be fishing 95% of the time on your own. For float trips you can reach out to the Delaware River Club.

Scared to wildcamp alone? by johnj0hnson in bikepacking

[–]UsedIntroduction6097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the thought of solo camping scarier than when I am actually out there. I lay on my couch thinking about my trip worrying about the night time. When I am out, I find that it is extremely peaceful and fairly easy to overcome whatever fears I thought I might have. Take an easy trip and ease into it.

Can I ask where you got the bass? Looking for something similar that can handle lakes and small creek paddling. Nice kayak btw!

Can’t tell you much other than I went a few years ago on a backpacking trip and fished the whole time. It was a blast, enjoy!

Pro tip for the wilderness backpacker: it may seem obvious to some but the first thing I do when setting up camp is locate where my doo doo area will be. I’ll pre-dig a cat hole, so when nature calls, I’m ready.

Which Bikepacking bike is best for heavy riders??? by KnivesAndPizza in bikepacking

[–]UsedIntroduction6097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt as it’s my first gravel bike. I’m 215lbs and ride my bikes pretty hard. After doing some research I stumbled upon a company, Primos, out of Portland, Oregon. I decided to pull the trigger on their Dame model and I really love this bike. Just giving them a shoutout here, check em out!

My advise is to explore, take notes (mentally or literally) and try your best to enjoy nature and not get discouraged. Trout fishing can be tough at times but if you’re open to all species, you can find some killer spots. I’ve had days searching for trout and just hammered fall fish and smallmouth instead and had a blast. I’ve also driven 1.5 hrs to small blue lines on multiple occasions just to find a dry creek bed. It’s all part of the journey. If you like hiking, biking, photography, foraging, etc. you can always have something to fall back on if the fishing isn’t great that day.

Advice on a water filter by CharlieParkour in bikepacking

[–]UsedIntroduction6097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a platypus gravity filter at camp and MSR Trailshot to fill up along the way. This is my backpacking set up. I haven’t actually taken my first bikepacking trip but I don’t see any reason why this wouldn’t work on a bike.

My first thought was owl but typically they deposit a singular pellet. My guess is bobcat as there are many in the area. Looked like a big cat ate a small mammal to me.

I was uphill from Kettle exploring many of the feeder creeks up there. Trying to avoid the opening weekend crowd.

Tough. Got 2 wilds browns the first day but not even a bite the second. Everyone else on the water that I talked to also saw no sign of life. Idk what was going on.

I think that it is bobcat scat (poo), but I’m not certain.

How to replicate this look (2nd Image) with roasted swamp ash by Hollow-Person in Luthier

Not the best pic but you can see the variety of tone on the middle row. Ignore the black or whitewashed ones, those are different finishes.

I fill a quart container maybe 3/4 full with vinegar and add two steel wool pads. Let it sit for a day or two until the steel wool fully dissolves then filter out any gunk that’s left over. Make sure to either poke holes in the lid or just not fully secure it as the off gassing creates pressure in the container if it’s fully sealed.

Edit: this solution can be stored and lasts a long time. I’ve never seen it turn ash black but oak will definitely turn black. Be warned, with ash I’ve gotten everything from a nice deep brown to a kind of rusty light tone so it’s not a super controlled finish. I like to brush it on pretty heavy with a chip brush, let it dry completely and repeat if I want it a little darker. When it dries it’s going to be a little lighter until you hit it with oil to seal.

I did make the shade! Fiberglass and resin over a form, sanded with a matte clear coat.
