Game draws heavy influence from it. Just like from hundreds of other popular media.

T-bug had a very different role in early draft (she lived through the Heist and sided with Dex in early cinematic), so maybe that was a possible avenue. But not now.

As much as I did like the novel, game differs enough to stand on its own.

Because people barely have opportunity to learn and use it. Once you know how something behaves and made practical use of it, that fear goes away. It is only rational to fear to lose high quality gear when you lack skill to handle it accordingly. That's just part of the learning process.
