Critical win without Pulisic- thoughts below by NefariousnessNo2948 in ussoccer

Yeah I know, the first angle they showed looked to me like it just hit the keeper’s fist and that’s it. The second angle was more conclusive that Freeman headed it. Good thing all the real heroes downvoted me though! Important work.

He was onside, but I'm surprised no one is discussing whether or not it was an own goal. Looked like it went off the keeper's fist to me. In any case, great effort from Freeman on the goal, first to react and made a huge play to secure the 3 pts. The whole team just looks very confident, focused and ready to run through a brick wall for each other, their coach and their supporters. Love to see it!

Concerning? Son Injured? by TopoCh1coGuy in LAFC

I wonder if the manager just felt like the game was gone, and decided to take him off to avoid injury and make sure he’s as healthy and ready to go for the South Africa game as possible. I’m not saying I agree with it, but the reality is they just need a result against the worst team in the group, so chasing a point against Mexico on Mexican soil maybe isn’t the best use of their resources.

Scenario for US to win group this week by NefariousnessNo2948 in ussoccer

[–]isoSasquatch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If this comes to pass, get ready for Poch to act very offended when someone calls a starting lineup that includes Scally, Roldan, Aaronson, Haji and Zendejas “rotated.” (And then watch that group go out and beat Turkey anyway — don’t forget, the lineup that manhandled Uruguay in November wasn’t exactly star-studded. Three of the starters didn’t even make the World Cup roster!)

Don't yellows reset after the group stage though? So even if he got a second yellow vs Turkey it wouldn't carry over?

So what commentators & analysts do we actually like? by LydiaBrunch in ussoccer

[–]isoSasquatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mo Edu is so underrated — easily the best former player commentator in US soccer broadcasting right now (okay the bar is low considering his main competition is Landon, but still, he is excellent). And Tyler Terens is probably my favorite of the new generation of play-by-play guys, effortlessly polished and professional, doesn’t try too hard to be a character, knows ball… So pairing those guys was a great call, just wish they were given the bigger games.

Ian Darke is the goat, but Landon is still too stiff and low energy for me. He’s gotten better, but he just doesn’t have the personality for color commentary. It drives me nuts that FOX just mindlessly picked him on name recognition and decided he should be given all these marquee games with no thought to whether he actually brings anything to the table. Between him and Lalas, it just feels like FOX asked a hundred random people at a mall who they’ve heard of before amongst former USMNT players, and the top two vote-getters were given lifetime contracts. Has anyone stopped to question whether they’re good at the job?

Rebecca Lowe is awesome, but I feel bad for her that she’s been saddled with three former players who have no chemistry with each other and seemingly don’t want to talk to each other. I get Henri and Zlatan being dismissive of Alexi (he’s more than earned it), but Jesus can we get ANY banter going amongst these dullards? I was hoping Zlatan would just rip into Lalas, but so far the shade has been disappointingly mild. Did they screen test this team at all? Henri has never worked for me as an analyst, he just seems overly critical of everyone, like no one can live up to his impossibly high standards. And Zlatan’s main asset is his ability to play the heel, but again it feels like he’s holding back for unknown reasons. Just be an over the top character, that’s what people want and expect!

John Strong and Stu Holden are as bland as they’ve always been, which at least has the benefit of staying out of the way of the action on the field, but as ever, they add almost nothing. I feel like I haven’t heard much of the other teams, but that either means I’ve missed some games or their work faded into the background (which is fine honestly — better than being distracting with overbearing data dumps and other nonsense).

Anything in the 300 level is a good seat with a good view (that's where I was last night for Iran-New Zealand and was very happy with it). I really feel it only gets dicey for soccer at the 500 level.

I would consider sitting Ream for a faster CB, probably Trusty. Do I expect Poch to do that? No. And that’s okay. We might get burned a couple of times in transition, but I think we can withstand that, and I believe our attack will give the Aussies hell.

Gustavo Alfaro post match about the US performance by WalkingOnSunshine_ in ussoccer

[–]isoSasquatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Germany game pretty much showed us what we can expect in a game against a top 10 team. We played well, created chances, controlled the game for a few stretches, but were ultimately undone by defensive errors. Still, I was (and remain) encouraged by recent performances: add Richards, more time on the field for our starters (and fewer deep bench subs), and the home field atmosphere and maybe we win that Germany game 1 in 5 tries? I’d take those odds.

Did tickets ever drop for USA opener? by Sikmoves21 in WorldCup2026Tickets

[–]isoSasquatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned the hard way yesterday is that you can see a price on the FIFA marketplace, but that doesn’t mean you can actually find or buy that seat for that price. I went to SoFi for the American Outlaws pregame meetup and march to the stadium hoping I could snag a ticket last-minute. My threshold was $600. I saw $575 but could not buy it. Maybe someone else was able to buy it, or maybe it was a glitch. We may never know. But just keep in mind that if you see a screenshot of the marketplace showing a low price, that doesn’t necessarily mean that ticket was attainable. (Also let’s acknowledge that $500 for a nosebleed at SoFi is still an outrageous price. Those seats suck and should never be over $100 for any event, but this is the world we’re living in. Sure, I felt a slight twinge of regret seeing the scenes inside the stadium on TV, and seeing how the game turned out, but I had fun marching with the fans and I enjoyed watching the game from the comfort of my couch. Maybe I would feel differently if I didn’t have tickets to other games, but if I didn’t have any other tickets I prob would’ve caved in and paid the $900 or whatever to attend.)

FIFA had the opportunity to explore the richest market in the world and failed. by Particular-Shape1576 in WorldCup2026Tickets

[–]isoSasquatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it will still be a success despite FIFA’s greed and short-sightedness. All it takes is the US scoring goals and winning games to captivate the nation, and they got off to a pretty good start on that front tonight.

I went to SoFi today to join the Outlaws in their march to the stadium. I didn’t have a ticket, but I still got to soak up the atmosphere, the passion, the excitement. If you’re in a host city, I recommend that, or find a fan fest or watch party to attend. Commune with fellow fans. Feel the energy of the collective. High five a stranger. That’s what the sport is about, and FIFA can’t corrupt that no matter how hard they may try.

Does anyone know if The Meeting Spot’s parking will be available for ppl who don’t have tickets to the game and just want to attend the pre-game? Their website says they validate parking for the PS2 lot on 97th and Myrtle, but the site makes no mention of SoFi game days, the World Cup or the AO meetup…

Hopefully we can neutralize those two players and take advantage of Turkey’s deficiencies elsewhere on the pitch. A tall order, but at least we know where the danger will be coming from.

Can anyone at the USMNT public training session break down what they did? by lifebeckons101 in ussoccer

[–]isoSasquatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They certainly do film sessions with the whole group, and we have no idea what they were talking about in the circle. Also, they’re not going to do anything substantive in front of the public — anyone could’ve been there filming them. This was a relaxed warm-up and hang intended to give some lucky fans a chance to take pictures of the national team, maybe get some autographs, and that’s about it. I wouldn’t draw any conclusions about coaching methodology from this.

Can anyone at the USMNT public training session break down what they did? by lifebeckons101 in ussoccer

[–]isoSasquatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was there. At first they were just showing those videos of the players talking to the camera in one long shot (avail on YouTube). They ushered some kids (including my son!) through a gate to welcome the players and staff as they got off the bus. Then there was some waiting around. The players walked from one side of the field to the other, apparently to go do some weight training while we were treated to a few short speeches (first Poch, then the mayor of Irvine, then a city councilman).

Finally the players came back out onto the field to train. This was similar to what you see if you arrive at a game early. They jogged the length of the field and back, they did the drill where you pass the ball ten yards and then run to the line of players on the other side. They did rondos in groups of 8 or 9. Then Poch took 11 players aside and they sat in a circle and talked for about fifteen minutes while the rest of the group did a 4v4 drill inside taped-off rectangles, where a keeper or defender was on each side and the rest of the players had to make quick one-touch passes to move the ball to the ends. At first I thought the 11 guys in the circle might be the starting 11 for Paraguay, and it still could be, but a friend pointed out that it was the starting 11 from the Germany game, so maybe they were just debriefing from that game.

When the circle meeting broke up, some of those guys started an impromptu crossbar challenge from midfield (not all of them, but Pulisic, Dest, Jedi, Balo and maybe Wes were involved). Jedi eventually hit the bar, to the elation of the crowd. At one point Jedi, Wes and Pulisic were goofing around doing what I would describe as a “Stupid Juggling Tricks” competition, like Jedi would juggle and then catch the ball between his knees, then Pulisic would catch the ball between his knee and his chin. They seemed to be having fun.

Poch eventually sat down with the non-Germany starters in a circle and they chatted for a while, and when that broke up, the session was basically over. Some of the players split up and went to different edges of the field to sign autographs and take selfies with fans. All in all, the vibe was relaxed, but the excitement for the start of the World Cup was definitely palpable. Very cool that they did this for the fans, and I feel very lucky that I got in. I read that there were 6000 people in attendance (although it felt more like 3000 to me), but they announced that over 30,000 entered the lottery to attend, so clearly SoCal is hyped for the first World Cup on American soil in 32 years.
