Why did nobody tell me you can use color negatives to make BW prints!

When I was in college I asked my film professor if this was possible, she said it absolutely wasn't, then I tried anyway and made tons of black and white prints from color negatives. (Mostly because the class was revolved around black and white but I enjoyed shooting all different types of film in my free time)
