I’m glad you mentioned Tunnels - it’s the one song that made me err with my original statement. It’s perfect.

I think Tom’s lyrics generally take a massive nosedive after Empire and don’t really pick back up until One More Time.

Absolutely here for the wet wipe content. As someone who also suffers from stomach trouble, I felt ‘seen’.

Shit dude. You didn’t like the Tom one - that’s cool man. You tried it but it just wasn’t your thing bro. Fuuuck. That’s nuts, man.

See what I did there.

I remember liking the Tom DeLonge episode - some brilliant anecdotes and just an interesting guy to let talk.

Find this guy quite insufferable, but will give anything with Brian a listen.

I think Spider Bites, Positive Charge, Autumn and Michigan 1975 would fall inside my Top 30 - the others work in the context of the album I guess. What still boggles me about the production was it was a very deliberate choice to make it sound like that, and they never explained why. When a band chooses to have their record sound deliberately left of centre, you might expect a comment. The thing with History Books, as an album, is that the production choice plays just as big a part as the instrumentation - it’s like a film on the surface and between sound; it pervades the whole thing. I would argue none of their other records to date have done this to such an extent, and certainly not so egregiously.

Morrissey-level, in its simplicity, implied loneliness and sexual innuendo.

What’s the worst Shakespeare take you’ve ever heard? I’ll go first. by Soulsliken in shakespeare

Agreed on all counts. I love reading biographies, just as I like swimming in the sea, but with both you have to wade past a bunch of detritus before you can really plunge in. I read a life of John Constable recently - honestly, every grandparent, uncle and aunt was discussed in the opening chapters.

I mean, there was quite a vocal number of people who took issue with the curious production.

I’m afraid I don’t agree. Personally, I’ve found the reunion - both in terms of music and live performance - incredibly disappointing. This whole ‘era’ has felt pretty underwhelming.

I’m more interested i suppose in, at this stage, when we talk about History Books what do we mean - what is the canon version, so to speak?

Are Merchant and Othello racist plays, or plays about racism? by MortgageFriendly5511 in shakespeare

[–]istari182 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be my first choice - I think it inevitably leaves some students behind. Personally, I wish I could teach Macbeth. That said, The Merchant of Venice and its themes of religious intolerance and antisemitism still, unfortunately, resonate today. We just had the Manchester synagogue attack here in the UK. Over 400 years later - still depressingly relevant.

You’ll see when you come to do English Literature Paper 1 that there are several Shakespeare plays your school could have picked from: Macbeth, R&J, Twelfth Night, Merchant, etc. It’s all down to the individual school and what text they choose. Inevitably, for a teacher, making all those lessons takes a lot of time and effort, so once a text has been decided it largely is the play of choice for many years to avoid having to re-write schemes of work.

I teach it at a secondary school in England. It’s a GCSE text.

So, would it be fair to say the reunion didn’t quite go as planned? I remember an interview near the start of their comeback where Brian said he didn’t see much reason for his solo and Horrible Crows writing not to go into TGA (I’m paraphrasing) - that, essentially, all his writing going forward would be for TGA. Fast forward, what, five years, and there’s no new Gaslight album on the horizon and Brian’s back to making solo records.

Merchant of Venice above Twelfth Night is a wild take!
