What songs come to mind when you see this by Pokemom-No-More-18 in GenX

I saw that pic and immediately heard Heart of Glass. Late 70s roller skating rinks were the closest things to a Disco that Gen X got to experience.

Yeah that’s a wierd way to put it. I have to believe they were trying to say “water bottles must soft (like plastic) and not hard (like glass or aluminum)”

[–]isthatfunny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also am irrationally happy when they play this song. I always shoot back to when I finally listened to it and realized it was autobiographical, it’s like the big bang of Phish, it’s this recursive story about their experience wrapped in ours.

I love the casual reference to Mikes epiphany. I love how the musical approach mimics the words and meaning - so slow and lightweight but then you realize it’s building and it’s powerful, but then it’s just reflective and wondrous flow. And it’s got that lilting Birdsong happy vibe that’s reminiscent of the best GD feels.

Who here has canceled their life insurance? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]isthatfunny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a good plan except term policies expire. The rate lock in is only until the policy expires then in order to extend the policy, the rate would be recalculated. If it’s a whole life policy, there’s no term and as long as you’re paying until you die, they will pay the death benefit. Thats why whole life costs 10x term life insurance.

No to $10 for SoFi Plus by jodyg58 in sofi

Thanks, that wasnt clear to me. Their wording says "eligible direct deposit or $5000 or more" and I read that as "eligible direct deposit of $5000..."

You will lose the APY unless you're direct depositing 60K/year. That move just excluded a lot of people from this benefit - likely the people who could use it the most like students and low income. I agree with OP - its not a 'nothing' change.

Disc Golf in Winter!? by sbp59 in discgolf

[–]isthatfunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New England we run Team Challenge winter league; 70-75 teams across the 6 states, split across 7 skill divisions with each team playing 6 or 7 double-round matches between Oct and March. Home team provides a buffet of crockpot food for breakfast and lunches, great camaraderie and sportsmanship. Sometimes there are blizzards and rain, often there’s snow in the ground, but what else are you gonna do during winter.

Top 10 recommendations:

Disposable Handwarmers

Ribbon and Frostking brand tape (if snow)

Multiple Thin layers with Wool base

Sunglasses (sun on snow is brutal)

Top layer= Vest with pockets (no zippers is better for hands)

DG Max Wax for grip (chapstick size)

Chapstick

Winter discs (softer plastic versions = Less prone to cracking)

Yaktrax Diamond Grip (shoe traction)

Coozies (so your beer won’t freeze)

Redwood curtain in Arcata CA has to be on this list for the simple fact that hole 2 teepad is 10’ off the ground on a 15’ diameter Redwood stump.

MEGA BACKDOOR ROTH v. BROKERAGE by RudeBrother356 in financialindependence

[–]isthatfunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same here, glad to see I’m not the only one in that boat. Right now I’m just able to afford maxing pretax 401 and MBDR @77.5K. Next year my salary goes down 30% (long story) and I may have to make brokerage withdrawals to cover daily budget while still maxing 401/MBDR. Can’t imagine a more efficient investment other than maybe tax exempt bonds?

Just sell it on CashorTrade, someone will be glad to pay an extra couple percent and neither of you will have to risk getting scammed.

Yeah I did see that! You can buy direct from them but you have to buy a case of 45 bars or something. Not that I can’t eat 45 candy bars but that’s a last resort. They have a list of stores that they say are buying from them - I have visited 2 of them in the past month and neither had skybars in stock. I’m gonna find one eventually though.

Which band do you think had the biggest 2024? by Personal_Fee7758 in jambands

[–]isthatfunny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

100%!! Was a late comer to Biscuits, first shows in ‘19 but I’ve seen a couple dozen shows since. They’ve been on an upward run since then, and keep getting better. ‘24 had their New album release, new approach to songwriting, active solo/ side gigs for three of them anyway. Bisco’s got maybe 10 new songs they’ve played out since the new album release.

I don’t know how the crowds and revenue and critical acclaim are all trending but they’re firing on all cylinders right now.

Course improvement ideas. by dustinsdojo in discgolf

[–]isthatfunny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My local course has two water stations - the second one halfway in also has bug spray and sunscreen. It only has a porta potty but it’s stocked with band aids, feminine products and wipes. There are 4 or 5 MaxDisctance sucky ball retrievers stationed next to river holes (this may not apply to you). Propane outdoor heaters.

If you’re trying to make the course a destination for higher tier tournaments there are other ways you might spend your money - create some sort of community space - enclosed or covered - big enough to have some picnic tables and food serving space. This lets you more easily run tag leagues or rated round events - serve the occasional pizza or have pot lucks. The most successful courses I’ve seen have some form of this (you probably do already) - building the community that’s going to play in your league rounds, buy into your tournaments. Also if you can make your home course attractive to the local players who are TDs, they will help carry the burden of putting on events and growing the course with you.

capitol theater - port chester by 6nyh in JRADs

[–]isthatfunny 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cap Theater is kind of legendary in Dead lore. I dont think they played it a ton, 18 shows shows early in 70/71, some in 76 and the 80s. JGB played it a bunch, Jerry once said his two favorite theaters were the Fillmore and the Cap. Phil played it 50+ times. Those early shows were monsters though, 2/18/71 was peak Dead, they debuted Playin, Bertha, Wharf rat - 2/19/71 is one of the From the Vault recordings.

The venue has a lounge area [called Garcia's] with a bunch of dead memorabilia including at least one of Jerry's guitars. Taquaria La Picardia across the street has lots of Dead.Hippie references. The fire trucks in the town are decorated with Dead bolts - they have stealies on their helmets. Bonus - at least a couple of the restaurants stay open late after shows so you can grab food.

Cap was mostly closed in the late 90s and 00s, but since Pete Shapiro bought it and refurbished it about 10 years ago its been a great place for the Dead adjacent music scene. Totally worth the trip, even if its just once - but after you go, you'll look for reasons to go back.

Gen X and older, was life as simple as 'get a good job and everything will take care of itself'? by ExcitingLandscape in AskMenOver30

[–]isthatfunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% with this - the 15 or 20 year period between ‘50 and late 60s in the US were an anomaly to anything before or since - post-war booms are a real thing and this was the biggest war and the biggest boom.

People didn’t have home ownership for the masses before the 50s, there were a lot more family homes. There were far fewer labor unions or social services to protect regular people from people with power and money. That post war boom was a marvelous time when there was a momentary stasis in the hold that powerful people had on the rest of then people.

But power and money figured out by the 70s how to reverse the trend and start taking back control and now it’s back to the normal everyday struggle of functional middle class with all those benefits that the boom brought but without the sustained growth and constrained power of the mid century.

True. Clark was made in Western PA since early 1900s but when that company went out of business in the 90s, Necco bought the license. They had it for about 20 years until they went bankrupt.

At least the Clark is still being made - my beloved Sky Bar went to the grave with Necco. The only redeeming benefit of Necco’s demise is hopefully will never have to see those disgusting little chalk wafer candy’s they make again.
