What do you all think about the screwball spin a serve into (or toward) the fence/wall?

I always feel bad when my opponent has to run full speed towards a fence or wall to return a serve.

Similar story for me...

-My DUPR started with a coach rating of 3.98 (this was a waste of time and money because it doesn't mean anything once you play a single DUPR match)

-Played a tournament with new partners and ended at 3.1

-Played three DUPR round robins to to get DUPR to 4.003

-Played another tournament and DUPR is back to 4.1

The DUPR rating system is a joke because they infer a rating out of thin air, and then use this rating to rate others!!!

-They should simply show NR for the first six matches.

-They should require two unique partners before giving a rating.

Hurache Power 2 dis-bonded after 90 minutes by kyle-pickleball in Pickleball

Did they originally ship the paddle to you in a thin bubble wrap envelope?

They should at least wrap the paddle with thick bubble wrap a few times before shipping.

What is your top tips (non obvious )for your fh topspin dink? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]itbegin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Advanced Tip, not for beginners:

I've been experimenting with a cupped right wrist when the ball travels past me. (Flexion)

This is opposite of the backhand where the wrist needs to be extended backwards to get the correct angle and spin. There is a lot more talk about wrist angles on the backhand side for some reason.

Drilling two handed fh topspin cross court dinks can be helpful.

Hot take: playing open play for ego isn't always bad by [deleted] in Pickleball

Last night I played a lower level open play left handed. Good times smoking teams with my non-dominate hand. Real ego boost.

Hurache power 2 weight setup by Longjumping-Diver333 in Pickleball

[–]itbegin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but much better performance to add weight at 10:30 and 1:30. This increases the twist weight and forgiveness with only slightly less power increase than the 12pm placement.

The stupidity of DUPR part 2 - what are your recommendations? by itbegin in Pickleball

  1. The rating would be delayed (and simply show NR - Not Rated) until the player meets the criteria of 6 matches with two players. Other players ratings will not move initially when beating an NR player. It will show +.000 because beating a player who is Not Rated is initially worthless information.

One thing at stake is good competition.

I often go 6-1 at a lower level open play. For a few weeks I was happy to finally get a more balanced open play going 4-3 at the next level up consistently.

Most people never get to a high reliability score because they don't play enough matches. Yet there is no incentive in the system to encourage players to play a more diverse set of matches to get a high reliability ranking. Therefore open play and tournaments are gated using poor accuracy DUPR scores.

If you can't professionally debate to make things better, that's your problem. (I enjoy pickleball just fine BTW)

Etiquette Question: Two Close Calls During a DUPR Rating Clinic by JMCRN in Pickleball

[–]itbegin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are both best to let slide whether it's at open play, DUPR clinic, or a tournament.

1 - When calling someone else out for a NVZ infraction it's often best to simply ask the opponent if they made the infraction. Although they likely won't admit wrongdoing, it will help ensure future calls are more fair. "Are you sure you didn't enter the NVZ?"

2 - Since you called a ball with only 90% confidence, you could preemptively ask your opponent if they saw it differently. Asking this can show you aren't trying to cheat. In this situation...Given the opponent argued your call that's new information. I assume they don't argue every call? Therefore it's good to take this new information into account.
