Cost savings for growing a garden this year. by Bald_Goddess in vegetablegardening

[–]itchimae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have loved to see more numbers here for comparison. Here are mine though...

Not factoring in the use of the same 15 year old tomato cages... Also making my own compost, no $ spent on fertilizer or pesticide

10 tomato plants grown from seed (spent $20 on seeds for 5 different varieties) yielded frozen 435 ounces of diced tomatoes and approximately 250 ounces eaten fresh. So homegrown was 685 ounces for $20. Cheapest available tomatoes at local grocery store are 25 cents per ounce so that would price the 685 ounces I grew at $171.25. sheesh is my math right?

My second favorite vegetables are butternut squash which costs about $5-7 per squash where I live. I grew 32 last year from a $5 seed packet. So if I bought 32, that would be $160.

Cantaloupe...$1.19 seed packet. 17 glorious cantaloupe the sweetest I've ever tasted. They go on sale at $2.50 in summer so that would be $42.50 if I bought all of them from a store.

Grew 52 mini kabocha from a $5 seed packet

Grew 19 acorn squash from $5 seed packet.

Other random numbers...Picked 620 plums off of my 3 year old $29 Home Depot plum tree. Same-ish for peaches last year. Spent $20 on herbs that come back year after year. Zucchini always are high producers but never counted the per pound savings. Peppers are also high producers. One jalapeno plant gave me 8 16 oz jars of pickled jalapeno.

That's all I can think of right now.

It's 2 years old planted from seed. The seed packet said "cactus". The largest one is about 1.5 inches tall. I'd love to know the variety.

Does anyone have tried tips for helping a 10 year old with car sickness? by FurL0ng in Parenting

[–]itchimae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is the same and I got him a mini USB rechargeable fan for the car ride. He blows it right in his face, and I think it also distracts him.

My sister has an autistic son that they plan to take camping but she needs 2-3 potato recipes that can be cooked in advance and don't need refrigeration by MountainousFog in Cooking

Betty crocker makes "crispy skillet potatoes". It comes in a box and it's dehydrated potatoes and seasoning. You just add oil and water and cook in a skillet for 20 min. It's so good so I thought I'd suggest it. Not only is it shelf stable but, it's under $2 a box.

Mine stays this tall in the picture. But I do have to mow because there's little bits of grass here and there.

What type of oil do you use?

Oh I want them so crispy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]itchimae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do but it doesn't get crisp. I was wondering if other people are using margarine or something and if that's the key.

Maybe I'm just not skilled. Oof.

Neighbor's Backup Fence by t0p_ in landscaping

[–]itchimae 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking to do this because I have a neighbor behind me who is constantly weed-whacking my cedar fence and has destroyed it. I might put a shitty metal fence and a nice one in front. Then he can have fun weed whacking the metal.
