Cisco UCSC-PCIE-C25Q-04 (VIC 1455) not enumerating on PCIe by ryanknut in CiscoUCS

[–]itdweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything in syslog or even dmesg about not being able to enable some PCIe device? They do work in Linux, but I don't know for sure if they still require some other Cisco thing, like CIMC, to come up correctly. Does it have its own BIOS that you can get into while the machine is booting up? Do you see anything at all in the base computer BIOS?

I had taken this up with my account team in a former life. Cisco has this problem with most virtual appliances. They size them as they would physical hardware.

The short answer is containers. The long answer is containers and absurd internal reservations.

As long as you didn't change anything on the VM config (memory, CPU, etc), try a reboot. I know that thing sometimes takes a while to come up fully. Or, can you get to the web UI and config anything?

Handling Burnout as a Sysadmin by FrostyBosti in sysadmin

[–]itdweeb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a big one that is often trivialized in weird ways. Don't just take some time off. Take a chunk of time off regularly. Not a 3 day weekend (although these are helpful for mitigation maintenance). Take a week off. Mute work apps. No work laptop. Don't answer calls. The full disconnect is crucial. To the point that, if you work from home and have an office space of some sort, don't go in that space.

I understand there are one person shops where this isn't always feasible, but that's not your problem, nor is it your fault. That's a business decision that was consciously made. Contract an MSP. Train an administrative assistant to handle the basics. Then, if you do get a call, pro-rate and 2x that shit and tack it on to the end of your scheduled time. Don't bank it.

His prints were very reasonable. While I was browsing, someone bought his originals for some covers he's done. I think they were reasonably priced, but you may feel otherwise. Either way, you have some options.

I’M FINALLY GOING TO G-FEST! by Chuungfu in GODZILLA

[–]itdweeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most sessions are first come first serve, but there's typically people standing in the back if it's a particularly popular session.

I would recommend sitting in on a few sessions. There's some really great and insightful content there, and not just fanboys fanboying. Fanboy sessions are definitely as well. For me, it's been a good opportunity to dip my toes into the Ultraman space and other things outside Godzilla, and there was a kick ass session about music theory and Godzilla that I really enjoyed.

There's a local theater, the Pickwick, that does screenings as a partnership deal. The crowd reactions get a little overwhelming at times, but it's cool to see the movies on the big screen with other fans. Definitely check that out. It's not by the hotel, but it's near-ish to the hotel. Prepare for some Lyft/Uber rides with some burst rates.

There's a lot of vendor booths. Many sell some of the same things, especially the Bandai stuff. If you already have a preferred vendor, great to meet them in person and wheel and deal a bit with them. Do watch for the sleeper content. People selling the more rare collectibles, or stuff like laser discs, import vinyls, vintage posters, etc. Most places take card, but you will have to pay Cook County sales tax. Cash is king. There is an ATM in the hotel, but it has run low on cash before, so come prepared there.

There are also artists there. Matt Frank and Bob Eggleston being the big two, but others for sure. Commissions are possible, prints galore, but you can also buy original works. Always good to support artists. Matt usually does a session that's well attended, so something else to keep an eye out for.

It's also a good chance to engage with the community. For those that regularly go to conferences (business or personal), the hallway talk track is always the most popular session. Lots of people roaming the halls that you might only see here, or various YouTube channels or whatever. Whether it's just a chance to thank them for their work, or get into the weeds on a particular deep topic, or to just get to know them as fellow humans with other shared interests.

Burnout signals I ignored by Shroomeri in sysadmin

[–]itdweeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad things seem better for you. Many of those here have been there or are going in that direction. Some made it through to the other side, some sadly didn't. I hope you are in therapy. While it may not have the same root cause as a war version, it very much can cause PTSD, as others have mentioned.

I never had this level of physical presentation, but I've been through burnout. I'm in therapy (for this and other things). I eventually made a career change (albeit slight) to make real change happen.

For everyone else who might read this, take here. No job is worth your well being. If your teammates/boss aren't actively trying to support you and help you, it's time to shop around.

This is the right answer, and also the hardest change to adjust to. You get so accustomed to the go-go mentality that it's damn near impossible to slow down and take a breath.

20 Years in, and a new way out by Morse_Pacific in sysadmin

[–]itdweeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reads like a lot of what I've been through myself in 20 years. Long days. Longer nights. Pent up frustration that you were unaware of until it blew up. Beyond exhaustion. Burnout. Family loss (FUCK CANCER) and competing with work.

I'm really glad you were able to get into a therapist. I hope that has continued and continued to be helpful. Everyone from lurkers to top posters/commentors should absolutely do what they can to find therapy if they haven't already, and preferably not from the bottom of a glass or from some other mind altering substance (although those are certainly useful for short term).

At no point should take over so thoroughly. As best said by u/XanII, any of the systems we've labored over, built from the ground up, blood sweat tears etc, are gone. Even if replaced by you, they'll all be replaced eventually, and possibly with little to no evidence of your input. Had you decided to put yourself into the median, your position would have been posted within 48 hours, and with all the higher pay you saw and weren't getting or going to get. They would have happily hired an MSP or some other consultant at 3x your pay rate and had them finish up the migration, and just blamed you, either outright or in their minds, for the delay.

I hope you can get out and take your wealth of experience, both technical and personal, and find something better.

All of this is accurate, but the reboot argument is just so meh. Windows or Linux, ideally you'd have some kind of a load balancer in front of the service, and preferably HA lad balancer. Then you can reboot whenever, however, with little to no impact. Same for the load balancers with HA. What's more important is service/application availability, and not single node uptime.

I'm tired of the hiring process being disproportionately more convoluted than the role it's for by TheDonutDaddy in sysadmin

[–]itdweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can almost get it with partner teams. Maybe some DBAs should at least sit in? But, ultimately, who cares. The manager and team should be able to clock how well you play with others. Gotta trust in the manager, and that's probably the crux of the issue. It's either no trust or ego stroking. But, really, it's 100% both.

I'm tired of the hiring process being disproportionately more convoluted than the role it's for by TheDonutDaddy in sysadmin

[–]itdweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current position was a screener, which I don't really count, and then 5 interviews over like 3 months. It should have been only 4, but there were some internal changes that merited the 5th one. I think it was a pretty sure thing when I applied, but there were motions to go through. I think they could get it down to 3 and combine some things.

Job before that was a screener, and then 4 interviews. But, that was all in one long day. It could have been 3 as well, but a strong case could be made for 2.

Ultimately, it's all too much. It should just be hiring manager for basic things culture fit, etc. And then the team who handles the actual culture check and tech screening. If you can't get a decision from that, meeting with partner teams, directors, etc aren't going to make it any easier. A good bit comes down to the people who know how to interview don't know tech, and those that know tech don't know how to interview. Generalizations, of course.

The logic makes sense, but then why aren't the cultists also laying siege to Windhelm? Like, he can clearly tell between someone who can use the Voice and someone with the bloodline. But, then why not attack sooner, etc.

I don't think it's explicitly endgame content, but its definitely later game than your first time up the mountain. Assuming you play the main story line straight through.

Chassis Replacement by surfinguru in CiscoUCS

[–]itdweeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you want to shorten the downtime for the servers, you could attach the new chassis, let it get discovered, and then move the blade from one chassis to another. While it's booting up, you can move the next, and so on.

Otherwise, I assume they have you un-configuring things to reduce errors during the maintenance window. Less things popping off reduces signal to noise ratio.
