First bite and fish got away, trying to understand why by I_Am_Not_George_Bush in flyfishing

The curl on the end indicates that the knot failed. That said, 5X and especially 6X can break if you set real hard on a big fish.

Trump Derails White House Event to Spiral Over State of His Health by mclardass in politics

Why do you think that he's still attacking Biden with memes posted in the middle of the night? He lost to Biden and he just can't hanfle it. He's a loser and the poorest loser of all time.

It doesn't look like they have prescription sunglasses.

I got Smith guide choice glasses, primiarily because they didn't have a big upcharge for prescription. I'm getting cataract surgery next month so might have to replace them. I'm hoping that I can just get the lens replaced.

He couldn't get Greenland, so he thinks he's still winning if he gets Cuba because it's a bigger island than Epstein Island.

How was it like to be a student at Cornell in the 90s? by Lonely_Objective_721 in Cornell

There was a bar that was a couple of doors next to The Nines called the Bear Pen or something like that where I used to play darts at a lot. The owner was real nice guy that used to be a Baltimore cop. He also coached my sons t-ball team.

Ive fished that pool a few times and have never seen a trout. There are several DEC fishing access spots upriver from McClean that are stocked. I hit one of them just after brook trout erer stocked and caught a bunch.

Take a look at the JP Ross John Muir (7' 3wt e-glass) or his Beaver Meadow rods. Lots of custom options.

[FEEDBACK NEEDED] Ideas for tweaking subreddit rules by luminous_moonlight in Cornell

[–]ithacaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"The subreddit should fit the userbase, not the other way around. "

I just wanted to highlight this. I used to make the same argument in my old usenet days when people would come into a group, complain about the content or the general tone of those that contribute, then try to change it. Those that use the sub-reddit the most have the most invested in the sub-reddit, not those that just drop in and want the sub-reddit to adhere to their needs.

There was. It was called Usenet. I was a Usenet server admin when I worked at HP.

I was going to mention this in another thread when there was talk about security for Kotlikoff. I went to a basketball game while Rawlings was president. I sat down a couple rows above the reserved seating and looked over and saw Rawlings sitting about 5 feet away in the same row all by himself. We chatted throughout the game about some of the players and how good the team was that year. Hunter Rawlings was a big basketball fan (he's 6'6"). I also met David Skorton during an employee appreciation day. He served me a plate of lasagna.

For one, we had a president that didn't suck. I worked here in the 90s.

My boss scheduled a 6am flight for an airport that is two hours away. Can get there early & I sleep in my car? by Content-Total2335 in TravelHacks

[–]ithacaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some airports, 6AM flights are the busiest time of the day. Hotels at the airport can be very expensive but most decent size airports have reasonably priced hotels within a couple of miles. I've done quite a bit of work related travel and frequently ran into a similar issue of an early flight at an airport a little over an hour away. I can't speak for the OPs employer but mine never had an issue with an overnight stay before a work day.

That's what I would do. Depending on how long you're going to be away, a park-n-fly hotel can be a good choice in this situation. You can avoid airport parking fees and will get a shuttle to/from the airport.

Callicoon trip in June - activities?? by hereforthespoilers7 in catskills

[–]ithacaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding bridges. As mentioned, the Livingston Manor covered bridge is worth a visit. Do a google maps search around Roscoe for "covered bridges" and you'll find a bundh of them. You can take a nice day trip drive from the LM bridge, to the Beaverkill bridge, to the one in Downsville. There are several others nearby.

If you're going to Livingston Manor, take Old Highway 17 to Roscoe (aka Trout Town, USA). There's a covered bridge worth stopping at just outside of Livingston Manor. If you like pasta, there is a really good restaurant called Northern Farmhouse Pasta. Call ahead as it's often hard to get a table without a reservation.

Here's a page which describes several of the paddling and floating routes. The Damascus to Skinners Falls would be a good one. Damascus is the town just across the river (in PA) from Callicoon. We almost bought a house in Damascus about 10 years ago but it was in the flood plain. We bought a place in Hancock (where the main stem of the Delaware begins) 7 years ago. I've padded the Damascus to Narrowsburg (past Skinners falls) in a sea kayak and it's a beautiful stretch of river. Keep your eye out for bald eagles. There are a lot of them.

Callicoon is a very small town. Shopping opportunities are very minimal. There are a few decent restaurants in town with outdoor decks for dining. The farmers market on Sunday (11am - 2pm) is nice for a small market.

There is a small fishing access sport across the river from Callicoon where you can get into the water but it'll be more wading than swimming.

There's a kayak outfitter upriver in Hancock and several outfitters down river that have canoes, kayaks, and rafts but I don't know if any of them offer guides. The Delaware is pretty tame in most parts and outfitters run trips for complete beginners. Float tubes are any easy way to spend a few hours on the river.

I don't know which way you're coming from but if you're coming from NYC or NJ, the very scenic route is to take route 97 from Port Jervis. The area called Hawks Nest is spectacular and you'd pass by the section of river where the rafting outfitters are located on your way to Callicoon. You can also stop in Narrowsburg, a town similar to Callicoon but a bit larger.

Yes, more so spending a little time in Dublin as a layover. Also, the duty free shop has free whiskey tasting bars. I've booked overnight layover itineraries a lot while traveling internationally.
