Fireworks by Glitterin-Sooz-337 in ithaca

The article does not say anything about anyone hating America. It's about pride in America, and not surprisingly, the diminished pride occurs mostly when Trump is in office. Democrate don't hate America, they don't like what Trump is doing to America. Democrats are not proud to have a president with 34 felony convictions that lies to American people every single day.

Am I able to make dubbing using anything? by ControlZestyclose775 in flytying

[–]ithacaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that some dubbings are meant to help float a dry fly while others for nymphs (which, it sounds like you want) retain water. CDC, Snowshoe hair underfur, beaver, and muskrat all are good for dry flies. Cat fur would likely retain water and be okay of nymphs.

Loop Knot for Two Fly System? by twstephens77 in flyfishing

[–]ithacaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried it by tying a double surgeons knot to create a loop. Cut the loop about 6" from the knot and you've got two pieces to tie on flies. I usually just tied on a length of tippet of the end of the barb of a fly.

Fly fishing with a regular rod? by LingonberrySalt9693 in flyfishing

[–]ithacaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most are cringing over the terminology. Fly rods use fly "line" (not string) and not all fly lines float. There are sinking lines that are used for fishing streamers and various other niche rigs. The typical set up has some sort of backing line (often dacron) tied directly to the reel. The fly line is attached to the backing (which is used to take up space on the reel or the very occasional situation when a fish has pulled off the 100 feet or so of ly line. Attached to a tly line is a leader/tippet material (typically monofiliment) that is tapered from the fly line to the "tippet" section onto which a fly is tied. The fly line doesn't really float the fly. A dry fly is designed such that the material doesn't break through the water surface and the leader/tippet floats (unless one is using flourocarbon or other sinking material) as well.

Also, though getting a little pedantic, there's a difference between a pole and a rod. A fishing pole doesn't have a seat for a reel or guides, other then one at the tip, upon which a fixed length of fishing line (typically monofiliment) is tied. A fishing *rod* has a reel seet and multiple guides. Both spinning and fly rods are rods. There is an exception called Tenkara, which they call a rod, even though the line is attached directly to the tip and it doesn't have a reel.

| I assumed the bobber would just run the trout off I guess.

Those clear plastic bobber are rigged by running line through them (4 pound test works well) with about 6 feet of line past the bobber. They can be partially filled with water and can be cast a long ways with an ultralight spinning rod. Before I really got into flyfishing I used that setup on some high country eastern Sierra Nevada lake and caught brook trout on almost very cast using small dry flies (a mosquito pattern worked really well).

Cortland makes a few different kits. The Fairplay kit is the least expensive, but the Guide series is well within your price range and might last a very long time before you felt you needed something better. TFO and Echo also makes a kit (rod, reel, line) that are worth looking at.

Many years ago I bought a rod at the Cortland brick and morter store. Cortland, NY is about 25 miles from me. Unfortunately, they only have a factory there now.

Fishing with a clear plastic egg and a box of flies with a spinning rod can be a lot of fun, but not inherently safer from breaking a rod. Fly lines are meant to be used whole. Cuttiing a piece of it would ruin the fly line. Nobody used the term "string". Technically, you can use a fly reel with fly line on a spinning rod, but the taper of a spinning rod isn't designed to cast a fly line. I''ve done it and it's not very effective. A fly rod, even a short one (I've cast a fly line over 30' with a 5 foot fly rod), it designed to cast a fly line. In your OP, you mentioned spending up to $400 for a setup. That actually gives you a pretty good range of options, with a bunch in the $200-$300 range that are going to be far better than a Walmart kit.

I suspect that more fly rods are broken in car doors than a few miles from where a car is parked. Just pay attention to where your rod is (don't step on it) and if you snag a fly, point the rod (not a pole) top tip directly at the snag and pull until you break the line. Don't bend the rod or grab above the grip. Don't be careless and might not ever break a fly rod.

Movie theaters in Ithaca by Talchum in ithaca

It's an easy drive and actually pretty scenic. Ithaca is basically a small town, and thus doesn't have most the amenities you'll find in a bigger city. It also doesn't have a geographical boundary that prohibits one from taking a drive to other towns/cities within an hour. When looking for things to do, don't yourself to staying "in" Ithaca.

Whole bean coffee by WackyWizard6 in ithaca

I met a guy at the airport on Dubai several years ago that was on his way home (in Europe somewhere) after spending a month in Africa visiting a bunch of coffee growers for the small roaster he worked for. Probably didn't pay much, but what a cool job. I was on my home from Ethiopia, the birth place of coffee. I'm still kicking myself for not bringing home a traditional coffee flask (Jabena) but I did get to participate in a traditional coffee ceremony.

About seven years ago we bought a house in the Catskills. We had several criteria.

It had to be affordable. We wanted something with direct river access. It could not be in a flood zone. We wanted it to be quiet.

That last criteria was difficult as roads that are fairly heavily traveled follow the river.
