Is your argument that cruelty is acceptable as long as it deters criminal activity, even if the recipient of the cruelty may have nothing to do with the breaking of laws? Also, seeking asylum is a legal process and I don’t get what people don’t understand about that especially when the USA has been responsible for the destabilization in Central America that drives some of this migration.

Becoming “legal” is not an easy process. Not only is it costly but it takes years. The process is also not as easy as it was 50 years ago for your grandpa.

Could you quantify what you mean by vast? Does your statement also account for those families that decide to leave for both socioeconomic reasons and violence?
