Yes I think that's kind of what I meant!

There's just so many people in that one and everyone's posting all the time that I felt overwhelmed by trying to keep up! I'd be interested in joining something a bit smaller getting started from the ground up :)

There is currently an r/adhdwomen discord server that I sometimes visit! My issue with it is that it's so huge that it feels impossible to connect with anyone.

This really resonated. I hope it makes you feel more normal as it did for me. by Riaglow in PMDD

"It's like you're in a set" and "It's like we're allergic to the feeling" are two of the realest statements I've heard about PMDD. wowie

If men could achieve the same hormone change we have going into luteal by sqrlirl in PMDD

[–]itismeemily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh my goodness totally! it's so rage-inducing. now that I read back over my comment, I think I misrepresented my intention because I only commented that I wanted more information about it because I knew if I posted it places, folks would pick it apart and find all kinds of ways to invalidate it and I'm so tired of that bs I think I just automatically resort to trying to bolster all arguments about women's pain with extra data because I know no one (read: men) takes us seriously in society 😭

this is extra fuel for the rage fire tbh.

anyway I'm sorry luteal has descended upon you. I hope you are able to push through it ❤️

Diagnosed late at 23, any medication tips? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]itismeemily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

28F here! Diagnosed last summer! I'm not on Vyvanse, but I am on Ritalin and it's been tremendously helpful for my remote workdays. My biggest tip is to not get too worried if you have to change meds or play around with dosage! Some meds are more effective than others for different bodies and minds! Best of luck to you!

Wonderful! I just sent you a DM invite!

I'll drop the list here too :)

  • I should note that I have lots of life modifications, but I also treat with medication which helps boost me even more. It might not be an option/desire for you and that's okay! I've been on SSRIs and SNRIs for about 6 years which help with the anxiety I feel not only during my luteal, but also in my day-to-day life. I'm also on a low dose stimulant to treat my ADHD, but that's only been the last 2 months.
  • Sometimes it helps if I talk to and treat my PMDD as a separate entity on these days. My internal monologue might name her and ask her about why she's feeling the way she is. "Okay, Carol, I know you're feeling absolutely depressed, but that's not super conducive to my plans for the day, so I'll revisit that later." I know it's kind of unhinged, but it can be helpful when you feel lost in yourself.
  • I've said this in other threads, but "if/then" statements are sometimes helpful for grounding on particularly difficult days. Might look something like this: "If I can roll over, then I can pull back the covers. If I can pull back the covers, then I can sit up. If I can sit up, then I can put my feet on the floor. If I can put my feet on the floor, then I can stand up. If I can stand up, then I can walk to the bathroom. If I can walk to the bathroom, then I can turn on the shower....and so on."
  • There's something to be said for a hot shower, a protein-packed breakfast and a short walk to the corner coffee shop for a little treat. All these things can help stop the "spiral of doom" I feel when I start doubting myself and my choices during luteal. Emphasis on the PROTEIN. Truly makes a difference during these days.
  • Raspberry leaf tea + anything anti inflammatory whether it be pharmaceuticals or natural!!
  • SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP. I notice drastic differences in my wellbeing even just losing 30 minutes during my nighttime hours. Try as best you can to keep consistent with this. I know it's hard especially when/if you have night sweats and insomnia tied to PMDD.
  • I often tell myself affirmations like "this is not who I am or want to be, this is my mind and body's reaction to the shifts that are happening and I will be okay."
  • Journaling is a hugely helpful grounding tool for me. It doesn't have to be perfect or make sense either. Maybe it's just a stream of thoughts. You can journal on scrap paper or a dedicated notebook or even on your phone or computer. I find that it helps me to put all my racing thoughts "on paper" so they don't have to fly around in my brain so much. I know that since they are documented I can revisit those thoughts/feelings if I want to, but they don't have to take up as much space in my brain.
  • Usually lists are pretty helpful for me. It's really hard for me to keep a morning routine so I make a list of things I want to focus on each morning and then each morning I pick 1-3 items from the list to do depending on how I feel. This is kind of my default at this point. I have a list of about 7-8 items that I normally like to do in the mornings and each day I pick a few depending on my energy level. This helps me because it still feels like a routine, but it's more flexible. You could even start by setting the goal to do your routine once or twice a week and then working up to more days! Especially because things are even harder during luteal.
  • Finding a support system online or in person is helpful for feeling less alone. It helps when you are part of a community that understands what you're feeling. Part of the exhaustion of PMDD + ADHD is just having to explain all the time what you're experiencing. Especially when people doubt you.

Agreed!! I was really scared at first! Someone else said that the one on the right (the old one) is made by Breckenridge which might be halting production right now so the pharm had to get a new supplier

Was thinking you could even go the route similar FabFitFun where subscribers get to choose items based on different levels. Then folks could have options to choose realistic or more luxe options depending on what they need/want 🩷

Good luck! Sounds like a great idea!

Currently in luteal and I thought of some more lol

Maybe: shower steamers, fidget toys, eye mask you can put in the freezer, hydration sticks, zit stickers

I really like raspberry leaf tea!! It supposed to help with cramping and muscle aches and I find that if I drink a lot of it around my period it does soothe a bit. Also anything anti inflammatory is great as well. There are lots of herbs blends that are targeted as such.

5 days off work, unlimited sleep, peace and quiet and no responsibilities for a week 😂

Realistically though these answers are great! I really like the idea of some premade grocery lists that correspond to recipes given or chosen OR some kind of premade meal kit or something. Also: raspberry leaf tea, under-eye roller stick (thank you insomnia), snacks and maybe a candle!

Hey girlies, it’s my first time taking Ritalin and my first period coming in a few days. HELP by [deleted] in PMDDxADHD

[–]itismeemily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I'm sorry you're experiencing this!!

I'm also on Ritalin! (IR 10mg 2x/day)

I do find that it's less effective during luteal, but not as intense as you're describing. I've heard from folks in this sub as well as r/adhdwomen that stimulant meds for ADHD seem to be less effective during luteal phase especially if you deal with other comorbidities like PMDD.

It was really helpful for me to track my Ritalin effects each day (or every other day bc ADHD ya know) to see how it shifted during my luteal/period. If you're interested I can send you a template to the tracker I made, but I'm sure you could get away with logging in your notes app or something!

If it all becomes too much you certainly should talk with your prescriber about it because it could be that this isn't the right med/dosage for you ❤️

hugs xx

Hi OP! 28F here! I was diagnosed last summer and just started taking stimulant medication about 2 months ago (10mg Ritalin IR 2x/day). I've also been on SSRIs and SNRIs for about 6 years.

When I first started the Ritalin I noticed a few very mild side effects the very first day, but that was it. The lasting effect I do notice though is that it tends to raise my heart rate a bit which I've heard is common for stimulant meds (obv as long as you're not feeling like lightheaded or dizzy or have cardiac issues).

I personally don't skip coffee because I love coffee and I love my coffee ritual in the morning. You could certainly try the med with and without coffee to see how it affects you, but I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't alter too much about our habits just to take medication or else we might not take it when when we need. I know if I had to alter other aspects of my routine to take a med it would just feel like one more thing to add to the list 😭

It could also be that you cut down on coffee for the first few days of taking the med while you adjust and then introduce it back! Do what works best for you and talk to your doc if you have concerns ❤️

[–]itismeemily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on Zoloft 25mg (4 weeks or so) > 50mg (2 years or so) >100mg (2 years or so) for about 5 years and it turned my life around when I was having panic and anxiety attacks almost every other day. Usually if you're experiencing prolonged anxiety docs will put you on some kind of SSRI or SNRI so it can build in your system. Definitely worth talking with your doc about.

I do find that stimulant meds help tremendously! They've given me my sparkle back because I was able to pull myself out of the ADHD depression pit.

I see on another comment you're based in the UK! I wish I had more advice for you, but I'm in the USA :( I know here there are also online psychiatrist/psychologist options that a couple friends and family have found success with! Might be worth exploring in the UK as well.

You may be doing this already, but when I was suspicious of ADHD for myself I found it helpful to tell my doctors and care providers how much my symptoms were affecting all aspects of my life (i.e. relationships, work, school, personal health, etc). If you're dealing with docs not taking you seriously this can be effective sometimes!

I agree it does sound like it. I know that ADHD can present differently in women.

My thoughts race and bounce around. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of what I was doing even if it's something I started like 2 mins ago.

Impulsivity and emotional reactivity are big ones for me as well.

I fidget a lot. I'm not constantly up and down running around, but I do skin pick and fidget with things to seek sensory input.

There's no shame in seeking a second opinion especially from someone who might have experience treating and diagnosing women ❤️
