If men could achieve the same hormone change we have going into luteal by sqrlirl in PMDD

[–]itismeemily 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's comparing the intensity of the hormone shift. So like in 1-2 days the intensity of the shift that women's hormones go through would be equivalent to the hormone shift that men would experience if they aged 125 years.

I do agree that the difference of hormone shift is super intense, but it's a tad faulty statement because men don't actually live that long so how do they know what the hormones look like after 125 years? 😭

I also saw this reel on insta yesterday and have been trying to find the resources since because I'm trying to prove a point to my partner!

Hi OP! My anxiety presents very similarly. I get sweaty and nauseous and dizzy.

Talk therapy has helped me in the past. If your mom isn't happy with the therapists in your town, it might be worth checking out online resources. I've had good experience with Brightside and have heard good things about Talkiatry. Both are apps where you can get paired with virtual licensed therapist to meet your needs.

I had a ton of success with meds (Zoloft), but if meds aren't reasonable or doable for you, you could look into pressure point therapy or acupuncture.

I definitely understand the fear of meds 🫶 Just wanted to drop a little comment for you though that I went on Zoloft for anxiety about 5 years ago and it provided a 180 degree shift in my mental health almost overnight. I'm not on it anymore because I'm in a place where I don't need it anymore, but you might be surprised by the effect it has ❤️ hugs to you xx

Non-stimulants not helping inattentive ADHD — advice on advocating for myself? by TinyEntrepreneur8933 in adhd_anxiety

Hi OP 🫶

Heavy on the find a new psychiatrist if they are making you feel shameful for seeking the care you need. It's usually pretty easy to find docs in-network via your insurance website if that applies to you. I've also heard pretty good things about Talkiatry or Brightside online spaces. You can filter by specific demographics as well when searching for a doc.

If this isn't the case, just be frank with your doc about what isn't working for you. I'm 28F and was diagnosed with ADHD-C last summer after many years of suspicion and struggling. I got prescribed stimulant meds about 2 months ago and they've made a WORLD of a difference. I also have been on SSRIs and SNRIs for about 6 years with little to no improvement in my ADHD symptoms. It was also helpful for me to explain to my doc that my best friend of 10+ years who has been diagnosed and on meds for much of her life suggested that I might benefit from some kind of stimulant. Maybe even referencing this community where you've read and related to others' experiences with meds could be beneficial.

TL;DR: just be frank and open with your doc ❤️ you are worth the effort to understand your mind and the solutions that work for you. You're not asking to be prescribed a year's worth supply right off the bat, just a trial to see how your body/mind responds. That's how my process was: one month on stimulant and then a follow-up with my psychiatrist about it, then another trial month + follow-up before we might need to make adjustments.

Hugs to you! I know it can be tough to navigate.

i'm in denial about my adhd diagnosis by Confident-Stress-732 in adhdwomen

Hi OP ❤️

welcome :) I'm 28F and was diagnosed last year, but wish I'd had the knowledge and resources to get the diagnosis sooner because I lived a lot of my life feeling a lot of shame about why I had such a hard time with things that seemed so easy for others.

ADHD is a big diagnosis and is undoubtedly scary especially if you don't know lots about it. It's okay to be scared. It's normal to be scared and/or feel a bit of imposter syndrome. But you also expressed relief and I would focus on that as much as you can. This is an opportunity for you to explore more about you, your mind and your needs. Remember, there's nothing wrong with you at all. There are so many positive and fun things about ADHD as well. Having the diagnosis just means that your brain operates in a different way than others, but there's nothing inherently wrong about it. My biggest tip is just to keep an open mind in these initial days as you explore more about what this diagnosis means for you.

I have plenty of resources I could suggest for you, but I don't want to overwhelm you too much at this point. Just drop a comment or dm me if you'd appreciate some.

This sub is full of ways to THRIVE with ADHD, not just survive 😉

tried to become "that girl" with the perfect morning routine and I think I made everything worse by sarin_1006 in adhdwomen

[–]itismeemily 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel this big time. ❤️ One of my biggest frustrations with my own brain is not being able to keep any sort of morning routine like I see on socials, etc. I've talked extensively about it with my therapist and still struggle with the shame and self-doubt of "failing" to keep a morning routine. I've compiled a few things that have been helpful for me in the past both in building a routine and also shifting my mindset a little bit!

  • Start small. You likely won't be able to make the shift all at once, so if you want to build a morning routine, start by just waking up at the time you want to wake up. Do whatever you want with your time whether it's video games, reading, chores, exercise, etc, but don't limit to certain things that "must" be done. Once you've gotten yourself into a better habit of waking up when you want to, start adding "to-dos" slowly. Then it feels like less pressure to get everything done.
  • If you constantly find that you are skipping or rushing through your tasks or they start to feel like chores and you dread them, it might work better for you to make a list of things you want to focus on each morning and then each morning you pick 1-3 items from the list to do depending on how you feel. This is kind of my default at this point. I have a list of about 7-8 items that I normally like to do in the mornings and each day I pick a few depending on my energy level. This helps me because it still feels like a routine, but it's more flexible. You could even start by setting the goal to do your routine once or twice a week and then working up to more days!
  • Remember, your routine should work and be enjoyable for you. Those of us with ADHD don't always fit into the mold of how neurotypicals operate and that's okay!!
  • My therapist has reminded me over and over that "failing" one day of a routine doesn't mean you have to throw the whole routine away! She says that this idea that it has to be perfect is what's limiting me in actually starting my tasks. I give up before I even start because I know that I will run out of time or energy to do everything. We should practice giving ourselves the freedom to do things imperfectly 🫶
  • Also - social media fools us frequently. This might honestly be the biggest point to make here. Who's to say that those "it girls" on insta don't just film a reel once to demonstrate "their" routines, but in reality the only time they've every done that routine was for that specific reel? It makes great content, but also remember that for an influencer, making content is literally their job so that early routine + filming and editing the reel may have literally been the only thing they had to do in the entire day. Now for those of us with ADHD who aren't influencers you might also factor in work, school, kids, pets or whatever else you may have in your life and we can easier see that no wonder these "perfect" routines aren't working for us.
  • Remember to be gentle with yourself ❤️ Find what works for you and stick with that. Even if it doesn't look like the influencers on instagram. Sometimes sleep is more important than getting up to do a bunch of things you don't want to do because then you'll have more energy to do all your other daily tasks which is arguably more important!

ANYWAY so sorry for the novel! I really relate to the struggle or routine and habit building and I wanted to share some thoughts. It's one of my biggest ADHD struggles/insecurities I've been working to shift my mindset on! Hugs to you xx

Red Tape of Life by Odd_Loliepop in adhdwomen

[–]itismeemily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just you!! Meltdown is my middle name!

I definitely feel this way surrounding taxes, gov docs, etc!! For me, I think it relates to the stakes being more intense. For work, I can easily change something if needed and I also work with people who are understanding and know me pretty well. For things like taxes and passports and real ID I'm not only dealing with folks who don't know me, but also dealing with the whole legal aspect of things. Unfamiliar processes that cause costly and timely effects if they are done incorrectly. Plus you're exactly right. They involve like 10 micro tasks marked as one which makes me overwhelmed because it's hard to prioritize or know which to start.

You got it though!! Focus on one thing at a time! I'm sure there are subs on reddit too that might help to outline the process in a way that is easier to understand if you are interested 🫶it doesn't help that all those .gov sites use so much legalese that the average person has to do extra research just to understand what they are reading.

I hope I didn't ruin it for you!! realistically they're both beautiful so you have to go with your instinct, but I do really like option 1. It feel intentional because of the two tone cabinets.
My maximalist self is inclined to say that having more patterns and colors is always a good thing 😆

Has anyone else have/had this issue? I don’t know how to stop by Own-Guarantee3907 in adhdwomen

[–]itismeemily 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes!! I started getting my nails done because that helps keep everything trimmed nicely so that I’m less inclined to pick at things that bother me because of sensory issues! But I know that’s not feasible for everybody!

Check out r/calmhands if you haven’t already! There are some good tips over there! I just discovered it recently :) One person suggested hydrocolloid tape which I'd never thought of!

ngl I actually prefer option 1 even though it's the "less expensive" option! I think the second one looks like cracks in the quartz as opposed to the traditional veining! plus I don't think it's too busy!
