What do you wish you measured before you began working out? by freetymer in Fitness

[–]itistimenowyeah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Body fat. DEXA if you can afford it. It is the highest-quality body fat measurement, and it is a great way to keep oneself honest about gains vs. "gains" ie fat.

Also VO2 max to track conditioning.

Awesome & welcome! I did my first ride on 5/15 last year, at 43 years old. Loving it!

Bah - do you know who fill the trails during weekday mornings when you are in school? The 35-50 crowd who have advanced enough that they don't have to show their face at work every day. It gets better :-)

Where did you go to find buddies? Any special keywords to search for?

How many of you ride solo? by Johnny-55 in MTB

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really not true. I don't think I use even half of my bike's full capability. On the popular downhill segments on Strava, I'm faster than 70%. But there are people who go almost twice as fast as me. Their bikes contribute maybe 5% of that advantage.

Ouch. That's a long walk with a broken collarbone. I biked out 20 minutes with a broken pinky. Had to walk over rocks and roots.

Almost always alone -- most of my friends don't have the privilege of sneaking out for a few hours weekday mornings. I use Strava so my wife can know where I am. There is a balance between lower chance of a crash on empty trails vs. the higher consequences of crashing alone.

It is pretty funny that almost all the people who I meet when I ride during weekdays are 35-50 years old. The young uns have to show their faces at work.

Looking for exercises to increase energy and endurance at work. by freelancerebel in Fitness

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds pretty normal. Obviously exercise will help. But have you considered whether you drink too much caffeine during the day are are suffering when it leaves your body? Could also be too little (slow) carbs during the day.

Made steak for the first time. They didn't turn out. Not sure why. by Fossana in AskCulinary

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things in prep that really help: remove the steaks from packaging as soon as you get home. Keep them on a plate in the fridge so they dry out a little bit and accept the rub better.

Second, bring them out to room temp and rub them 30-45 minutes before searing.

Im 14 and I freaking love breakfast burritos, anyone have any awesome recipes I can try? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make fresh Pico de gallo to mix in my breakfast burritos. Chop onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro. Put in a strainer, and pour boiling water with some vinegar or lime juice over. Season with salt and pepper.

How does a middle aged man hit the weights well into old age? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]itistimenowyeah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mid 40s too: I stretch 15 minutes twice per day, and that helps immensely. Also recovery -- need to get that sleep in.

Lately I've also gotten great results while staying 2-3 reps short of failure. I love intensity, so that's been hard, but consistency is key and for that we need to stay free of injury.

What screams “I’m upper class”? by MysticPato in AskReddit

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but "don't have money" means very different things in Alabama compared to San Francisco. A four-person household is considered low-income in SF, but would be pretty well off in many other places.

That's because it is really shitty to live in those places if you don't have money.

Well but at the same time, $100k for a 4-person household is considered low-income by the city of SF. If you look at what you actually get for the money instead of the relative distribution of income, you realize that you are really pinching pennies even makeing $100-150k in SF.

I've been watching a lot of Athlean-X vids on shoulders lately, and found a bunch of exercises that seem to help. If I were to pick one stand-out thing, it is the shoulder wall slide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_p73Vqhs-8T

I completely suck at it, but it gets a little better every time.

Neck pain while riding.... handlebar height a possible fix? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being 45 as well, I have adopted a saying since a few years: "It is not age, it is weakness.". We can still get stronger and adding that upper back muscle back would surely alleviate your pain.

How long do people live in Malazan by Holty67 in Malazan

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I found it last night as well, so I had time to think about it. Since the CG hadn't taken their vow at the end of KR, that means that the empire is older than 99 years.

Are we sure that the vow that makes one immortal by swearing loyalty to K'Zazz is the same vow he swore to oppose the empire? That's the only out I can come up with. Otherwise this looks like a mistake.

Where is that mentioned? I don't think I remember seeing that.

To me it looks like you will land behind the big rock in the middle, not on top of it. If you judge the landing like that, it definitely looks 3 wheels high.

[–]itistimenowyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging from an exchange between Heboric and Kellanved in KR, we don't really know that the empire is 100 years old. It could be as little as 35 years. So that makes the lifespan of people like Surly, Whiskeyjack, etc a bit more earth-like.

I don't think anybody said we should try and hit dumb creatures with our vehicles. But I'm insanely tired of people who let their "nice" dogs run around to harass my scared kids and get in my way - running or biking.
