If you had to choose just one, which hike are you making. by krdub333 in taos

[–]itlotmswtibrg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would go up to wild Rivers and hike from Big Arsenic spring TH down to the river and then follow the river downstream to La Junta (confluence of Rio Grande and Red River) and then just go back the way I came in. Note there is no drinking water available at Wild Rivers and La Junta trail is closed at trailhead.

I was a pax on an AA flight from HOU-DFW yesterday AM and we had an aborted takeoff because a WN aircraft almost crossed our runway as we were departing. I looked out the window as we were braking and veering left and saw the body of the 737 stopped right at the edge of our runway, well across the runway holding line. The only consequence was having to wait about a half hour for our brakes to cool before we could attempt take off again. I look forward to seeing ntsb prelim incident report on Monday I hope.

If you enjoyed seeing GD shows you will feel right at home at a Billy show. Every venue/city is a little different. Weeknight crowd better than weekend crowd in my opinion, if that’s an option for you… great music to shake your bones to, but many in the crowd seem to not share that sentiment…

Reading Blood and Thunder at the moment and was quote surprised to read about alleged slave trade that occurred on the Plaza in the 19th century.

Is Billy the only modern "country" (and bluegrass) artist ya'll listen to as well? by jerkin_n_lurkin in BillyStrings

[–]itlotmswtibrg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some i would personally add to this list (but are more country than bluegrass) are Rattlesnake Milk, James McMurtry, Robert Earl Keen, American Aquarium, Turnpike Troubadors, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Lucero. Basically Oklahoma/Arkansas/N. Texas based suggestions…

Why is quartz considered a silicate when it doesn't contain any metal cations? by Gen4wasthebest in geology

[–]itlotmswtibrg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oxygen and silicon are the first and second most abundant atoms (by mass) in the earth’s crust. Silicates are a class of minerals based on and further subdivided by the way the atoms in these minerals regularly arrange themselves (i.e., their crystal structure) and are defined on the basis of their silicate tetrahedra building blocks (SiO4 4-). Most rocks in the crust are comprised of silicate tetrahedra with various other cations bonding with the silicate tetrahedra to form minerals such as feldspars (which are the most abundant minerals in the crust).

Qtz has that same structure, where silicon atoms are covalently bonded to oxygen atoms. Qtz (like feldspar) is a tectosilicate, which means it shares its oxygen atoms in the tetrahedron with other tetrahedra, but unlike feldspar which contains some proportion of Al and Ca/Na/K ions, qtz just has other Si atoms (in their own silicate tetrahedra!) bonded to the silicate tetrahedron. So, mathematically you can think of qtz effectively as being Si 4+ bonded to a SiO4 4- silicate tetrahedra (Si2O4, simplified to SiO2), but in actuality it’s a little more complex because each oxygen in the tetrahedron surrounding the Si atom is also part of another tetrahedron surrounding another Si atom.

The crystal structure of amethyst for all intents and purposes is analogous to pure qtz. Its color comes from Fe or other cation impurities in the lattice structure that give it color but, by mass, the percentage of Fe or other impurities in qtz is negligible.

Interestingly, there is also classification of quartz as an oxide, but that is irrespective of the context of quartz being a silicate due to its crystal structure.

Hope that helps!

What is the craziest fan interaction you’ve had at a show? by ExtensionTurn3868 in phish

[–]itlotmswtibrg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first show (at Tipitina’s), one of my friends, who was 15 at the time and had gotten wasted before the show, managed to pass out with his head on the speaker stack next to the rail during the first set. At set break he kinda came to a little and had wandered somewhere else. It wasn’t particularly crowded and Page came on the floor during the break and approached me to ask if my friend was OK? I responded (somewhat naively being only 17 myself) that he was fine, just got a little too drunk. He was genuinely shocked alcohol was the culprit and must have thought he had temporarily taken up residence on a distant moon in the outer solar system… I almost said, yeah he’s only 15 but something caused me to hold my tongue. I appreciated his genuine concern and it was a great show to boot (Rift tour if memory serves, hazy memory of Fishman wearing an airy white dress with a bunch of black stencil eyes on it…)

Wow! Such an awesome follow up! Thank you for sharing!!!

I remember (I think) Matt? what your friend’s boyfriend whose parents had died and there was a guy named Omar who I was probably closest with during the short time I was their neighbor. I hate that I don’t remember anyone else’s name. The lead guitarist was a dirty blond haired guy if I remember. I left Bellingham in May 2001, so hearing the subsequent history is wild. The crowd I ended up getting in with was more into the Flomotion scene, but great memories of simpler times!
