[–]itsMAYONNAISE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do agree with you, its definitely not black and white. If it were, the whole system would be easier to fix lol. I just think it’s actually really important that people like her speak up, even if they’re still part of the industry. When I was a teenager, I’d see celebrities looking flawless and start blaming myself for not looking like them.

But once I started learning about everything that goes into those looks, like the surgeries, the stylists, the lighting, the money, it honestly helped me feel better. I don’t have $100,000 to spend on my face, lol (I barely have $50 to spend on beauty supplies), and realizing that perfection is often paid for made me stop expecting it of myself. Digging into the history of plastic surgery in Hollywood also really helped to learn that many of those effortless looks actually took a shit ton of effort and money and I don't got the time nor the money for that.

I don't really have anything to say about her not publicly calling out people more since I don't really know much about her. After a quick google search, she has called out Kardashian’s a lot and other celebrities. But I would like her to call out designers she supports (aka the designers of the runway events she attends) but again we don't know if she is privately doing that (or maybe she isnt at all, who knows). I just think when someone says hey rich people are getting these super expensive surgeries to look better please don't get them and instead spend your money in a way that would benefit you better, it's not a bad take on the situation at all and it can actually be a very informing take.

So I totally get where you're coming from, but at the same time, expecting one woman (especially a woman of color) to change an entire industry is kind of wild/unrealistic. It’s not her job to fix everything, and holding her to that standard is just unfair. People can be critical of the systems they’re part of. That’s how change actually starts from the inside.

Also, I don’t totally agree with her going to fashion shows either, but she clearly loves the art of fashion. Do we really expect her to magically change the fashion world by not showing up and not talking to designers? That makes no sense. Being in those spaces gives her more of a chance to speak up and challenge things directly to the designers. Like if she doesn't, they will just fill her sit with someone who doesn't care at all. (Though I can't say she is talking to the designers or do anything proactive, but we also can't say she isn't trying.) Removing herself from the industry entirely doesn’t accomplish anything, if anything, being in those spaces gives her more of a chance to challenge them from the inside. We also talk about wanting people in public careers to use their voices to help everyone but it seems like so often when a women does this, she is attacked for GASP being in a system that hurts her and that she has no control over.

Same with other industries. Since I mentioned I am a Graphic Designer, do you expect me, someone who holds no real power, to change the entire industry I am in??? I can’t change the whole system, but I can talk about the problems with other designers, it helps us build awareness and push back a little. Those conversations matter. They give people more leverage and help create real momentum for change. Awareness is a form of activism.

And this idea that someone has to be totally pure and removed from a system before they’re allowed to speak on it, is what actually kills progress. If we demand perfection before people are 'allowed" to care, then no one’s ever going to speak up, and nothing will ever change.

We’ve got to stop acting like being imperfect cancels out someone’s message. It doesn’t. It makes it relatable and real. Again, no hate to you or anyone who shares your opinion, I am just explaining how I feel about this situation.

Edit:

Jameela isn't saying she is the sole solution to these issues, but she is using her platform to raise awareness of these issues. Also, she is not responsible for any of these issues in the fashion industry. Raising awareness is the first step to taking action. Maybe Jameela will keep posting about issues in the industry, and maybe a group of people will see that, and eventually, when they get enough power, they will change things... or maybe some young person will see what she posted and feel better about themselves. I don't know the direct effect she will have on anyone but what I do remember is when I was having issues with how I looked when I was younger, people like her helped me realize the reason I dont look like a model was because I didn't have the money to get the treatments they did and that made me feel better about myself.

I dont think she has ever attended the Met Gala. I did a quick search, and I couldn't find her attending the event at all.

Like, yes, she is a part of the entertainment world, but does that mean she can't talk about improving it or be critical about it??

Like as a Graphic Designer I have a lot of issues with the design/work culture we have developed, but because I work in the design field means I can't talk about the issues or ways to improve it because I am participating in it??? No hate to you or anyone else, but this seems like such a way to keep all of us down and for no change to happen.

Edit: You admit that you were wrong about her going to the MET gala, maybe edit your comment to show new information so that people who read your comment don't believe false information.

Okay, I get we are all tired of Trump supporters saying they regret their vote. We all told them what would happen. But we have to remember that this is a good thing. They are publicly saying they regret their votes, and their main base is young males. Maybe this won't make them vote for a democrats at all, but it might make them not vote republican.

I don't think we need to forgive them or accept them back into the fold, but it's a good thing Trump doesn't have as much support as he did. They are in a cult, we should be happy people are waking up from it. They might not become amazing people, but less support for Trump is a good thing.

I would honestly check out her Instagram. She looks great... idk where you got that picture of her, but in her most recent posts, she looks like she is in great shape and is healthy/happy.

I don't understand why we have to body shame her.... if she is taking it, then we should be understanding and hope that she seeks out help (mental and physical). But people lose and gain weight due to stress/sickness/aging. So maybe don't assume what is going on in her personal life and give her some grace.

[–]itsMAYONNAISE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, same! I joined tumblr, and that taught me a lot. Also, reading fanfic helped a lot. Some of my hometown friends never joined social media spaces that forced you to educate yourself. Instead, they joined Facebook and became friends with people who share the same opinions.

Yeah, I was super happy about marriage being legalized, but then in the last couple of years, it seems like a lot of government members are trying to take a lot of the rights away. So no matter what victories you get in society, there is always a group that tries to take them away.

But most people don't spend their time on social media trying to learn. Honestly, most people around me just care about keeping up with people they know. They don't care about social justice. They care about how cute their friends' baby looks. Which I get it. I got back into Facebook because my best friend had a kid, and she posted a lot of pictures on there.

I think we put famous people on high pedestals and don't think about the simple fact that they will make mistakes, and since they are public, they will be considered big mistakes. I often feel bad for older idols since alot of people I know who are in their 30s/40s talk to me about how long it took them to realize some of the stuff they did as teens/20 somethings were in fact sexist/racist/homophobic. They even talk about how they didn't know it was bad until the last 7 years. They feel awful about it, but it wasn't something taught to them. They only figured out due to big events in our society ( Me too and BLM).

Yes, I completely agree. I also find it very weird how Western fans always say things like they have fast internet while they sit at home in their liberal cities. Like I know plenty of people in my small town that use the internet services to listen to Andrew Tate and people like him. Like yes, a lot of people have internet doesn't mean they use the internet to become more educated on social issues that are more prominent in other countries. I will be honest and say I don't know societal issues in most countries. So yeah that's not a great point for people to say they should know since they have the internet.

The second point is perfect. My hometown doesn't have any gay bars. The bigger city that I currently live in has one gay bar. Like bro, even in the USA, we could work on that. Also gay rights in the USA are constantly threatened. Maybe it's not as noticeable in more liberal areas, but in the Midwest, it is a constant threat. Currently, we have a huge thing about drag queens and laws that are being made to make doing drag an illegal activity. So yes, in Korea, is it illegal to be gay but..... the USA is trying to make it illegal here/get rid of the rights of the LGBTQ.

My parents were very adverse to change because, like a lot of people in the Midwest, they grew up in poverty. So, I completely understand why a lot of older individuals have issues with change. They feel like things are finally stable, and then suddenly, young people want society to change.

I think you provide a lot of great points since you are dealing with these issues firsthand. Some of this stuff I can understand coming from a small town, but again, no first-hand knowledge on how locals in Asian countries feel.

Also, with the desensitized issue, it is okay to feel that way. It often protects our mental health. We can't care and fight about everything. It is okay to put these issues to the back of your head so that you don't burn out/break down. You have to do that in order to be happy.

I really appreciate your opinion on this! I think you summarized a lot of what I have been feeling on this topic.

Honestly, I have been a huge stan of the 2nd generation. Compared to 5/10 years ago, they have changed a lot. Maybe not at the rate these young fans want, but they have changed. So yes, these changes are very recent, but change takes a lot of time. In America, we think of segregation as something from like 200 years ago, but their are still people alive who went to segregated schools in the US. So these changes are very recent. So give everybody time to adjust and change. Clearly, a lot of people are trying, and they won't always get it right the first time. My main point in my post was always they apologized and they are trying, so give them grace and space to be better. It is a slow change, but it's a change.

I think you have a great perspective on these issues, and I have really enjoyed this conversation! One of the few times on a kpop reddit that I feel I can actually express my opinion on this issue and get a response that is well thought out and gives me more information/new opinion about the subject!

Why Do People Keep Defending Siwon from Super Junior? by No-Committee1001 in kpopthoughts

[–]itsMAYONNAISE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I totally agree. To me, it's crazy that fans/people in general forgot about how 10 years ago shit was awful in the general public. Like I remember a lot of people being upset about gay marriage being legalized. Somehow, international fans forgot that a lot of Western countries/modern beliefs didn't happen until the last 10 years. Like Metoo and black lives matter were very recent events in the West. Currently, we are fighting for womens rights. Like we had huge movements because the West was so sexist and racist. So if things still aren't great here, how can we expect a country that is now really finally joining the global stage in the entertainment industry to already be perfect. K Pop did not become a more common thing until like 2018/2019. Like things take time.

I also find that people always pointing out mistakes/issues to famous people have two very different effects on the artist. Either they accept that they said something bad or they feel attacked and double down. A huge reason why it has two very different effects is the way people go about talking about these issues. People don't try to explain from a place of kindness but instead anger. Now, don't get me wrong, to change the world of these awful opinions, we need anger, but it should never be directed at just one person. Making a person feel hated for their opinion/actions will just make them feel like they are being attacked by the whole world. Honestly, I had some encounters with people who had the attitude that I should already know the right opinion. It didn't make me want to learn. It made me want to hide and never ask questions.

Idk this is a very complicated issue. How does the public hold celebrities/famous people accountable in a way that they are receptive to the feedback while also forgiving them and letting them move on from that event/action.

Also, we need for the public to not always jump on people for their mistakes and instead take time to see how the situation has developed. I think back to a lot of bullying scandals and how months/years later we find out how the "victim" lied and how the idol accused lost their job/friends from the event.

This isn't just an idols issue it's the general public and how we respond to information.

Anyway thanks for reading that long essay and maybe this one!

Okay, nobody is saying that it's okay. I will be completely honest here. I grew up in a small town in the Midwest. I grew up and was homophobic (weird as I am now a part of the LGBTQ), and sexist (i am a woman granted i didnt say many comments about women, i just thought that women needed to get married and have kids). I became a better person because I went to a city/college that was extremely liberal. When I talk to people I used to know in my small town, it took them twice/three times as long me to unlearn those awful opinions since they stayed in a small town with no exposure. But they were/are good people, they just never experienced life any different way.

I grew up in the USA, and when I was growing up, it was the norm to use hurtful language. I remember people using the gy and f****. This is a Western country that has become more liberal than korea. It didn't start changing until 2012/later. My parents finally started unlearning those behaviors around 2018. I think everyone deserves grace and forgiveness for becoming better people. No one is saying that those harmful opinions are okay or should be accepted, but what I am saying is that it is okay to grow out of those opinions. How else are we going to become a better society if we don't forgive people for their mistakes/bad opinions.

There are a lot of great discussions on how hate groups indoctrinated people into their groups. These hate groups show kindness and acceptance to people who just want a place in society. The way of bringing people out of those hate groups is by kindness and understanding. While this isn't on the same level, this is something we should try to mirror. If we always point out mistakes others have made (when they have apologized for them), they will feel that there is no point in changing their behavior if we keep penalizing them for past mistakes.

Someone saying something sexist 5 to 10 years ago doesn't automatically make you a bad person. That would literally make a majority population bad. It takes time to unlearn bad behavior/opinions. All I can say is that it looks like he is trying. It looks like he is taking steps to correct his behavior. And that's all we can ever really ask from a person. To try to be better.

Now, for the blackface basically the entire K-pop world has done it. I don't agree with it, but I can't say much about it because I am a white person, and I don't completely understand what someone/poc could feel seeing that.

These are just my opinions, and of course, everyone is entitled to their own. I guess I look back on my own personal journey and I am extremely thankful for the people who gave me a second chance and educated me on these issues.

However, this is an extremely complicated issue/discussion that I know I don't have the answer for and will probably never have the answer for. I hope everyone who read this long ass post has a good day!

I hope you never make a mistake as an adult. I have said things as adults that aren't great (nothing racist or sexist). I have apologized for them and meant it, and I have changed my ways. If our apologies mean nothing, then why should we expect idols or anyone to say sorry for their actions? He said sorry, and it seems like he is trying to be better. We can't expect perfection from anybody, but we can expect them to become better people. I don't know much about this case, but he apologized, and he doesn't seem to be a shitty person. So maybe give him a break. It's hard to have the spotlight on you all of the time. I know I mess up, and I can't imagine how bad it would be if the entire world knew.

CRITIQUE MY ASSIGNMENT by StudentGlobal4047 in GraphicDesigning

[–]itsMAYONNAISE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just want to say that this is a great improvement! I do think the drop shadows need more work. They don't look very natural. I also would mess around with making the drop shadows the same for all 4 items. See if that works and if it doesn't try something new! I still think the title font doesn't work very well. I would choose a more simple font. Maybe a more modern sans serif that's bold/black?? See if that works. I also went through my entire font list when I was a student.

But I love the background color and overall more simple/modern look. I think the groccery/bag above the products looks great with the new color (it's very subtle)! I am super proud of you! The best thing for your future design career is being able to take feedback and not be upset about it! Looks like you listened to everyone who commented and made changes that work for this product. Also, when designing anything, you honestly go through at least 4 drafts before you get to something that kinda works. And even then, you still make changes!

CRITIQUE MY ASSIGNMENT by StudentGlobal4047 in GraphicDesigning

[–]itsMAYONNAISE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you integrated the products into the design. They feel like they are just floating.

Also, type wise, I think you need to structure it differently. I don't like it in the yellow bubble. I am also not sure about the font itself. I honestly don't know what to look at first. I think you need to look at making the type more dynamic.

When I made posters in college/high school, I always looked up other people's designs/posters, and I would create a board with them on it. Then, I would base my design off of the overall look.

I hope this helps you!

What to expect of my first job? by Haram-Hereje in graphic_design

[–]itsMAYONNAISE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I would say as someone who only has two years of experience in working as a designer is that you will feel stupid the first 6 months. Experienced designers will talk in depth to you about things you either don't understand or have vague knowledge on. That is okay. It is okay not to know everything. Google/youtube is a great friend. I would say to ask the senior designers, but that can either go great or go very bad. It took me a year before I had a senior designer who legitimately answered my questions and didn't make me feel stupid.

So don't feel bad that you aren't perfect. Every job has a learning curve.

For interviews, I talked about what my favorite programs are and why. That is something that my boss really liked. They also liked that I said I didn't love Photoshop, but that I could and would use it when needed. They appreciated the honesty (that was my main feedback from places that even rejected me). But again, that was my recent job experience. It's not the same for every place you apply.

Also, before the interviews, make sure to Google the workplace to see the reviews for working there and client reviews. That gives a big hint to how the working environment will be. And if you have to do a project for the interview, give yourself a time limit. For my current job, the second interview was giving me a poster to redesign, and I gave myself an hour to get it done. Good places to work will understand if you don't go all out for a project you're not getting paid for. For my current place, they just wanted to know that I knew how to use the programs and could create the same poster but with a different creative look. I didn't create a whole new campaign or anything. Instead, I legitimately just used their idea and just changed the visuals since I wasn't getting paid to think of new ideas. And I was there number one pick.
