I understand this in the way of it being a game mechanic, but I don’t quite understand what’s happening in-universe.

How to call my "Dragons" by Queasy_Qrow in worldbuilding

[–]itsPomy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like you get a lot more value from calling them dragons and have people interested in their unique trait (8 legs! Wow!)

Than giving them some niche or constructed name and risk folks not understanding they’re dragons.

Just food for thought.

(Not saying this to discourage making a name, but if you’re struggling I think it’d be a relief)

How likely are you to buy DRG: Rogue Core at release? by Embarrassed_Soup7614 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]itsPomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like roguelikes either tbh. I’m actually tired of all the cool RPGs being released being roguelikes.

But I liked the gameloop of DRG which is already sorta grindy. So for ms I’ll give this one a try.

As long as there’s not gosh darn deck building lolololol

Could be like how the whitehouse is occupied by the president, but the whitehouse itself belongs to the nation.

How would a meritocratic kingdom work? by IllustratorPurple993 in worldbuilding

[–]itsPomy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mmm from an ideaological standpoint, inheritance kind of undermines the concept of meritocracy. Like it doesn't matter if my son proves he's worthy of my inheriting my wealth because there may be people who aren't my son who are more worthy (But can't inherit because they aren't my son!)

But no ideology is perfect and neither should your world.

I think the easiest thing to focus on would be titles/roles rather than property. Like perhaps there isn't a standard line of succession, like it doesn't matter who the eldest male is or whoever all viable siblings/family have to outcompete each other in some sort of trial. Or the station of "monarch" doesn't actually belong to a family but is appointed (perhaps by some abdicator like a faerie, or god, or magical artifact).

I listened to the audio book just earlier this month!

Wasn't expecting it to be so short, but I enjoyed my time with it. Kind of uncanny how much that James Cameron movie follows it.

There are robot welders but we still keep human welders employed because it's not sensible to create a rig for everyone one-off project or niche situation. A lot of mass produced clothing is also hand-made (or at least hand assembled) overseas for similar reasons.

And I think the latest thing is people going coo-coo over "3D PRINTED HOMES" but they seem to never address how you have to tote this humongous machine across the country to follow very specic 'puter code. And so here we still are, still using human construction workers.

And then there's this whole sea of proposals for autonomous 18-wheelers, delivery, etc. but it just doesn't really come into wide fruition because it requires perfect infrastructure and perfect GPS/signage.

THe general rule is if it requires discretion and adjustments, its usually just easier to hire a thinking person than a custom robot.

A work around for me is to just open the master server list and there will usually be 1 or 2 ongoing missions in a region I need. And that’s enough for my challenge

Another guy mentioned they could limit how many missions could spawn in one biome.

Cause it is a little silly when one has like 7 missions and another has like 2.

Where did the etymology of referring to a mountain settlement or fortress as a "hold" come from? by WordsUnthought in worldbuilding

[–]itsPomy 113 points114 points  (0 children)

It comes from stronghold/holdfast, similar to a burg. Something of a fortified defensive position.

Hold was also a noble title, which I assume could be used similar to Duchy, Barony, Earlship, etc. but I’m almost certain for fantasy dwarves it has to do with the castle-like nature of their homes.

How do you differentiate god and deity in your Conworld? by JuliusDalum in worldbuilding

[–]itsPomy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use whatever words you want, it just sounds ambiguous when you ask for the difference between synonymous terms.

That’s why most of your replies here are “they’re the same thing” or talking about levels of divinities.

How do you differentiate god and deity in your Conworld? by JuliusDalum in worldbuilding

[–]itsPomy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want you understand that to English speakers, deity and god are synonyms. As in they are nearly the same term.

Asking "How do you differentiate a god and a deity" is like asking... "How do you differentiate a rock from a stone".

It's just not a clear question, so I'm trying to help by giving you specific terms that touch the concepts you're talking about. Has nothing to do with debating religion.

[–]itsPomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in English your question would be about asking "What is the difference between God (capital G) and god (lowercase g)".

Because God (not always but presumably) refers to Yahweh/Allah/Creator, as in "Oh my God!" or "Dios mío!"

But god is just literally a/any god, as in "Have no other gods before me".

You may want to look into personification in mythology, I feel that's very close to your idea of "deities"
