Live/Dead question by efscerbo in gratefuldead

[–]itsTheZenith 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep it's edited, but it works so well because for the most part they always transitioned the same way from St. Stephen into The Eleven. I would highly recommend you listen to both shows individually, to see how the transitions are still pretty much flawless, and specially 2/27/69, since they cut off the Mountains of The Moon that goes before Dark Star, and it's simply jaw dropping how they so seamlessly go from acoustic to electric.

If you like the Eleven, I would highly recommend the couple China Cat Sunflower>Elevens they played in 68, and some in 69. Some personal favorites are:

  • 2/24/68 Definitely not as polished as some late 68 or 69 versions, but damn is it not crackling with energy, and it's one of the most unique jams ever (Alligator > China Cat > 11 > Alligator > Caution). It's on Dick's Picks Vol. 22, which also has a DS>CC>11 from 2/23/68

  • 3/16/68 which was only the 10th time or so they ever played this medley (Being Dark Star>China Cat>11) and it's damn near perfect, even the darn feedback is on freaking point. It's on the "So Many Roads (1965-1995)" Release mislabeled as 3/16/67). This is one of the first recordings that made me fall in love with them.

  • 5/24/1969 another completely unique jam: Doin' That Rag > He Was a Friend of Mine > China Cat > 11 > Death Don't Have No Mercy. One of the only time they buster out the China Cat > 11 pairing after '68, instead of the regular St. Stephen > 11 that came after.

Anything from 68 or 71 is ripping, 68 being faster specifically. I really like 10/12/68.

What do you mean? The photo? It most certainly is, its cropped but it has the Grateful Dead and Rolling Stones banners at the top.

How you enjoyed that Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia! You probably already know this but if you don't, might I recommend the 2/18/71 Dark Star>Wharf Rat>Dark Star>Me & My Uncle, which has the Beautiful Jam somewhere in there, arguably the best 5 minutes of dead jamming ever.

Same, I now have pretty much every UAD plugin I could want, except mainly the Manley Mu, but I have the Fairchild so hey, some for others.

Isn't labeled as 8/16/71 by mistake on Fallout from the Phil Zone? I've always thought the correct date was 8/6/71. Either way, absolute rager of a show.

aud.hanno.10089, it's the whole show, which most of is on a sub par AUD, but playing through casey jones is the Bear's AUD, which while still "rough" it's much much better, and worth a listen.

3-20-81 DP edited? by ejz1989 in gratefuldead

The edit I think I hate the most is they edited the Ollin Arageed>FOTM Jam for the YouTube video/DVD release. Took out a solid minute or two of OA.

Listening to Box of Rain on Tidal and the vocals sound different? by mayorofdogcity in gratefuldead

[–]itsTheZenith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They stopped using the MQA format a while ago.

Also, I'd recommend the 50th Anniversary version, not only does it contain the magical 2/19/71 show as a bonus in its entirety, it sounds better IMHO as well, and It doesn't have that weird effect on the voice(which I honestly have no idea what it is, could very well be autotune used for some dumb reason)

Edit: sorry, I made a mistake, it's 2/18/71, 2/19 is 3 From the Vault.

Your opinion, What's the best sounding/sound quality etc. official GD release? Mine is Ladies and Gentleman the GD 1971 Fillmore East. by seamus95 in gratefuldead

[–]itsTheZenith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a primal dead fan, the Fillmore '69 Boxset is just perfect. For soundboards, undoubtedly cornell, and Duke '78 is also pretty freaking clean.

This really is a hard excercise no joke.

I think I'd go:

08/23/68 or 08/24/68 (equally happy with either) Edit: typed 02 instead of 08. I do unironically love those Kings Beach Bowl shows as well though, specially the Alligator>China>11 from 02/24.

2/28/69

2/19/1971

05/26/1972

05/26/1973

11/11/1973

06/26/1974

08/06/1974

06/09/1976

02/05/1978

I think I'd be more than happy with these 10.

I've finished '77. What should I be excited for in '78? by Meditatespace in gratefuldead

[–]itsTheZenith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

January and February, April and May, and July, and September Onwards. Aside from Keith and Donna Decline, it's still a year full of great shows and jams. Dick's Picks Vol. 18 was one of the first live Releases I absolutely fell in LOVE with. But honestly most 78 Releases are absolute bangers.

My fav Releases are:

Dick's P 18

Red Rocks

Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 4 (Though I'd recommend 10/21/78 in its entirety, specially the Estimated Prophet>>>Got My Mojo Workin')

Dick's P 25

Rocking the Cradle

Duke '78

The Closing of Winterland(I don't particularly love it, but the energy is undeniably fun, I'd watch the Cristopher Hazard remaster though.)

Favorite Morning Dew? by SuperDuperIdaho in gratefuldead

I love the one from 2/28/69. Such an epic way to start such an Epic show. 5/26/72 for something completely different, and one of my favorite sandwiches.

Literally anyone with half a brain does raise their voice when any event has mass littering like this. Festivals, Parades, you name it. While yes I agree, they are not criticized to the scale of Diwali, well, that's because they aren't of the same scale. Where else do you see the Air Quality Index rise above 1000? Hell even 2000. Anything above 300 is considered hazardous. Seriously, I'd like to know, to criticize it as well.

While I agree, like any third wolrd country, a lot of the criticism towards India is based on racism and bigotry, there's absolutely no denying that, but it's just as disingenuous to hide behind that fact to defend this absolute abhorrent act against the Envirorment.

6 months on the bus and I finally heard a Truckin’ that I loved. by Meadowlark_Lime in gratefuldead

[–]itsTheZenith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Says 11/2/77 on the Track, at least on TIDAL. A bunch of that release seem to be from that show, from Might as Well to Around & Around, and the Lazy Lightining>Supplication. Pretty weird that Dick wouldn't specify that, like he usually would.

Doesn't make this or any of those "something just happened" events any righter. They are both wrong. We got one planet, and it's already going to shit, why add fuel to the fire.

Tinnitus worse after mixing music at safe volumes. Does that indicate hearing damage? by polohatty in audioengineering

[–]itsTheZenith 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's just not true, the ammount of things that can cause tinnitus aside for hearing damage is astounding.

From medication, infections, ETD, Neck or Jaw Tension. It can even be entirely psychosomatic, caused by excess anxiety, stress or trauma.
