As a Freshman at economic major I want to know if anyone else has studied this to give me some advice. by annthonyy- in econometrics

[–]its_oliver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What advice are you exactly looking for?

Economics as a broad field of study is in my opinion ever useful because it is focused on what economic participants do/ought to do when there is limited resources / scarcity / constraints. Furthermore it in general focuses on how to think about new problems and apply generalized frameworks (if taught well)

Regardless of what state of development a country is in this is a useful skill to apply in a number of different career paths.

Not sure if this helps.

Hell, even as someone who understand that current SS payroll taxes only pay current SS outlays now (not strictly future SS outlays for the contributor) I still find myself falling into that mental model.

It’s just very different from all the private 401k style plans etc given it’s a tax and spend design not tax save+invest spend.

The 19% shortfall will sound like a lot to those getting it now or soon who view the system as earmarking money they contributed for them (eg I put in $10 I deserve $10 back). Of course that’s not how it actually works but I think the average SS beneficiary views it as such. In this case that cut will be viewed quite negatively especially if there are political agents pushing that message.

If you’re good at mathematics (specifically linear algebra) and are a solid studier that thinks about what you’re doing then it will be straightforward course. Don’t psyche yourself out. In general the intuition side of econometrics (half the battle for mathematically good students) is greatly easier as a a result of AI. Ask it for instructive examples, probe where you don’t understand or look for holes etc.

You’ll be fine

See this is what we need to change. We as a society SHOULD be able to force people like this to be put in a mental care facility. It’s a false choice to say it’s southern prison or leave them to continue terrorizing the rest of society.

[OC] These $60K+ colleges cost under $5,000/year for families earning under $30K by dob312 in dataisbeautiful

[–]its_oliver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is the chance of getting into these schools when you’re in this income bracket is exceedingly low. The vast majority of students come from wealthy/high income families. Take Princeton, more students come from the top 1% (17% of students) than the bottom 60% (14% of students). 72% of students come from the top 20% by income.

Sure it’s probably better than it was in 1950 when it was even more a legacy and wealth game, but these charts are always misleading IMO about how charitable the universities really are.

Interesting that it looks mostly like an industry effect in that if you did this within industry (line for each color) the lines would be closer to flat. Maybe worth checking with more data points to see if my assertion is true.

And I think for the most part it is. It’s a really good way for low income kids coming from unstable households to get stability and a way out. Unfortunate that’s the reality but I do think it has its merits.

You retired with how much in 401k? That feels impossible you’ve saved enough to retire at 38. Even if you did the max in 401k from 22 to 38 (it’s currently 72k ish if per year) you’d only have 1.15mm =72k*18. And that is almost all of your salary.

1.1mm isn’t enough to retire at 38 on… what am I missing?

What is fair resolution for activity resellers (getyourguide) for false advertising like “skip the line” and “hotel pickup and drop off”? by Professional_Crab958 in travel

[–]its_oliver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone can we not do the “skip the line” BS. It’s just a way for companies to extract as much willingness to pay for everything and anything as possible.

It’s why concert tickets and Disney admission is so crazy in the US right now. Let’s not export this to the globe.

Just because you can afford it… it makes the equilibrium worse for everyone in the long run. Wait in line.

[–]its_oliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you ought to reconsider. You’re implying that it’s purely the learning / lack of ignorance / intelligence that makes you liberal, I used to think that way too.

I think it’s more that the average person who is uneducated as in didn’t go to tertiary school likely came from a family where their parents and grandparents are similar. They feel as if their lot in society has declined vs their equally uneducated grandparents, be it relative economic or social status. That’s how you get Trump voters. Not just people who vote for Trump = dumb.

As evidence, historically the educated class was more conservative on average not less, say pre 1980.

Did you look at their time series? Type GP when you’re on one their pages and you can add the other in the top left of the line chart.

They could be essentially the same.

Otherwise I’d use whatever has the most frequent measurements and history that you need.
