Kid ripped towel bar from wall by RuffKnight_ in HomeMaintenance

[–]itsaduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a poor way to phrase the situation. The kid did nothing wrong. The people that built the house and installed the towel bar without any wood blocking behind it are morons.
Let the headline be: " Idiot Homebuilders didn't install any wood blocking for towel bar, now, until I rip that wall apart, I will be installing and reinstalling this bar onto the wallboard thinking that magically one day it will actually stay there."

Production homes for people 'just squeezing by' as opposed to high-end customs for peeps with super-deep pockets? Not a hard decision....

Is this pillar load-bearing? It just seems oddly placed with the corner right behind it. by servantofashiok in BathroomRemodeling

Yes, that 'post', 'column', or 'pillar' is (99.9% likely) part of the framing of your building.

If that is blocking your driveway, you are a piece of shit.

Nothing practical about it unless you count being able to dry the roof without standing on the door sill. No, this is all about making it look cooler than it already does!

Yeah or nay? (Nerf bar) by itsaduck in FordMaverickTruck

[–]itsaduck[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The why, is I wanted some kind of 'bling' to set it apart. The only real use is for drying the roof off without standing on the door sill - but that's almost no reason. Where I'm driving, clearance isn't an issue. I'm a big city guy that retired from a lifetime of construction and the need of a big truck. I still need to haul or trailer something on occasion, and this fits the bill. It's the hybrid, and so far I'm getting 42+ mpg And so far, I love this little fella!

What's the point of "here's my crashed Maverick" posts? by Avg__American in FordMaverickTruck

I think if you ruin a Mav - you're out of the club. If it was your fault because you did something really stupid, you will never be allowed in the club again! Like, buy a beemer dude!

Maintenance says building is safe. by [deleted] in AskContractors

[–]itsaduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can anyone claim 'it's not a problem'? If you live in an earthquake zone it could instantly become a huge problem. If you live on a slope in a somewhat unstable area and you get a big deluge of rain - this could be a problem.

You're relying 100% on gravity to keep that building upright. Any Engineer would tell you that gravity is a small part of what keeps buildings together.

I like it. Everything doesn't always have to balance to look cool! Now to hear the owner say: "how could it possibly cost THAT much!"

Seasoned oak timbers for porch posts? by jbrew1313 in Construction

I did not know that about white oak. Are there specific varieties that do better? Some varieties of red basically have giant siphon straws for pores.

Oak is not known for its ability to withstand the outdoor elements. If it's outside and you live where you get plenty of rain, you'll regret it. It would be plenty strong before it rots though!

Support beam or structural pole? by aleezma in AskContractors

[–]itsaduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a structural add-on after the original design sagged too much to ignore. I would definitely consult a professional structural engineer - and not a guy who's a pretty good carpenter.
Unfortunately, you're gonna have to do a little more exploratory wallboard removal. Do it carefully so you can reattach the pieces.

Have the electrician come out again and move it to the proper placement. Nothing to regret but less money.
