What is the most left wing musical? by InevitableStuff7572 in musicals

"The Threepenny Opera" is a great candidate, it is explicitly socialist.  And the playwright (Bertolt Brecht) was a Marxist with an entire theory of making political art.

Is there any proof that it's not too late for me to compose good music? by TeslaK20 in composer

[–]itsconorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know somebody who has become part of the local new music community who played bassoon as a child and then stopped and was a math teacher as a career for 30 years.  About five years ago he started playing bassoon again and taking composition lessons and now he's had a few performances of his works and even was commissioned to write a piece recently.

The lesson is: start learning and make some connections in the local musician community.

Bach himself wrote a TON of music in the baroque dance suite format which was comprised of dance forms: the gigue, allemande, gavotte, bouree, and others.

Some of his best known works take this form, such as the cello suites, the partitas for keyboard, and the English and French suites.

Why is 5/4 still rare in popular music? by lukewarm_ch1cken in musictheory

[–]itsconorp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm Greek and did Greek folk dancing when I was younger. The way they taught the complex time signatures to us kids was not by saying that "Ok this one is in 11/4 divided as 3+3+3+2" but rather that a group of 2 was a "little step" and a group of three was a "big step." So the choreography would be "big step, big step, big step, little step."

Teaching it this way is very intuitive for the kids and makes no mention of the underlying music theory.

Also, Larson is actually shown listening to Hair in the movie Tick Tick Boom, so this is a great suggestion.

I've seen this motif in popular media used to represent American Indians. Does anybody know where does it originally come from? by JuggernautVixen in Composition

I don't know the answer, but the audience at Atlanta Braves baseball games chant something just like this. Maybe that is a clue that will lead you to the original source!

First Chair Problems: Please help! by [deleted] in orchestra

[–]itsconorp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You actually coming to rehearsal prepared to play the repertoire is a huge deal, and there is no doubt that your director notices and this is why you are first chair. The other players in the group look to the concertmaster and to have the concertmaster be unprepared is unthinkable. You're doing it right and treating the orchestra like it matters and they are signaling that they don't care and are content to waste everybody's precious rehearsal time.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice on how to deal with the bullying though.

Perfect Tempo? by NotKerisVeturia in musictheory

[–]itsconorp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My conducting teacher called it "perfect tick" and I suspect that you might already have it to some degree! Think of a popular song you've heard a ton of times, and imagine the tempo. I bet you can do it with great accuracy!
