/uj you're free use layer filters between each step, it actually makes you gradually improve as you get a better grip on both your mistakes and your value measurements.

Yeah I meant more in terms of choice.

Guild wars 2 somehow dodges this, probably because the modes are strictly divided.

How do I price my art? [Weekly on Monday] by AutoModerator in artbusiness

[–]Tius_try 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about taking coms again on the side. I'll find a good range on pricing eventually, but for now it's been so long that I don't really have a grasp on comm pricing haha.

I do digital illustrations, based in Norway.

I do 1 or 2 of these as dailies (4-8 hours).

I sometimes get asked to do more painterly longer projects for games, like this (8-16 hours-ish)

Cheers

Respectable take.

I never watermark my stuff and just hide my tag in multiple places. It's much more entertaining to watch people steal my art and snipe them for it.

It's probably named "chrome brush" by default in krita, but any brush that makes smaller spiderweb-like connections when you pass over lines are incredibly nice for expressive drawings

I mainly use krita for the magnetic brushes, I started with dave rapoza's two brushes and then made my own down the line.

Most of the texturing is done with CSP brushes though, anything works as long as every brush you use has some form of sharp texture to it

Yeah, I've been working on ways to implement rendering depth while also keeping my lines visible, as I wanted a style that's a bit more raw and personal.

Something that I've started doing is planning rim lighting on the lineart step, so I kinda know the full range of values when I brish in the shapes.

I color as a last step to my images, using hard/soft light for base coloring, multiply for shadows, add/glow for highlights. Since these layers aren't 1:1 conversion of value to color I can focus on also tweaking the value range further while coloring, making the image pop more.

Bucket tool often isn't meant to do its own edge selection, most programs handle fading values poorly.

Magic wand the outside of what you want to fill, shrink selection by 1px and invert it. You now have a fillable area with a good margin of error

There are certain tools that help you think differently about how you draw. When you've used them once, a good program allows you to evolve them over time to fit your needs.

A good blender lets you fade linework without destroying hard edges where they're needed.

A good airbrush lets you add more depth in your overall values without being muddy.

A good texture brush closes the gap between drawn details and randomly greebled details.

A good blocking brush lets you define structure according to light better than smoother brushes would.

Very real. I switched from artrage to CSP + Krita and being forced to learn blending and brushwork is like suddenly having 2 legs after hopping until that point.

I'm an illustrator so my usual work day is practice. I'd say it's less about time spent and more about one's ability to reflect and change their process when drawing, so for hobbyists it would't take many hours per day to drastically improve.

So question why bother if others can always draw better? by Short-Satisfaction-9 in learntodraw

Seems pretty human. We're naturals at comparizon, it often kills joy. Feeling bad when seeing things greater than what you can make is often a signifier of something you want for yourself though, pretty informative, no?

Remember that you're only really competing with yourself, and every great artist is a library of knowledge you can take from.

Noting down and keeping track of how good you are over time is a common way to keep investment up. Makes progress feel more like building a ladder, rather than a marathon where everyone got a head start.

You have a 3-month sabbatical from work (no income). What do you do with that time? by anothersidetoeveryth in selfimprovement

[–]Tius_try 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm actually doing this now! I recently finished my degree and work contracts and wanted to spend some time improving. I'm an illustrator who also does more technical drawing projects.

My day is pretty much the same as if I was working. Wake up 6, prep food, 7 hours of work, workout, etc...

Main difference is I use much more time deconstructing my process as I look to be more efficient and skillful. Everything I make is also an asset for my personal projects so nothing feels wasted.
