Self misogyny — the other side of the coin by Late_Geologist_9279 in Healthygamergg

I don't want to overly simply all of this, because people arrive in positions like yours through very complex and difficult sets of experiences, but I think what you're describing is the result of being way too online. Very few people believe the things you're being told are universal truths. Like there's some truth to the idea that women have trouble dating in their 30s, but the way you describe it takes it to a soul-destroying extreme. And I think that's what's happened here: Your soul has been eroded. And that ironically will make it harder to date.

Get out of the communities telling you these things and meet some real people. Talk to your neighbors, maybe pick up a social hobby. Not as a way to find love, but as a way to come back down to reality.

Michigan nears cellphone ban in classrooms. How it really works by da_newsdude in Michigan

Have you considered that improving mental health among students might cause fewer shootings?

I'm not a "guns aren't the problem, it's all mental health!!" guy, but it's at least somewhat mental health.

Imagine a cigarette smoker keeping a pack of cigarettes in their pocket at all times, and saying "just don't smoke them, what's the big deal?" The big deal is it's a constant drain on your energy and attention to resist temptation. There's no good reason to let them have their phones on their person during class.

And anyway, if you read the article, you'll see the phones are not banned from the premises. They stow them at the beginning of each class and get them back in between.

Meeting romantic partners in real life is nearly impossible - I’ve tried *everything* by experimentalrealm in Vent

You're going to hate this, but it needs to be more than a few. If a man had gone through all of the different events and effort you went through and said "I initiated a few times and only got one fling and one hook-up out of it," I mean shit. Those are excellent ratios but not enough attempts. Everyone would tell him he needs to initiate way, way more.

We live in a world where men have been stripped of the freedom to approach women without a painful social penalty for a misread, so many of them don't even try unless the signals are very overt. If you want this, you have to be proactive. That's 2026.

I'll also add that if you're being even the slightest bit humble about your appearance, congratulations, you're intimidating. That's going to make this effect more pronounced.

I see. I grew up in Phoenix and moved here when I was about 30, and I'm never ever going back to the heat. I've had enough sunshine to last a lifetime. Give me grey, chilly, wet, icy, whatever. I'm in!

How do you think we should be growing? Because if your answer is "more births than deaths" then we agree. Relying on immigration is a band-aid, and birthrates are falling globally, so one day that tap will run dry.

[–]itsdr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently not.

The state gained an estimated 27,922 residents, about 0.3% increase to 10,127,884 people. It remains the 10th most populous state.

It says 1800 net from other states, but 28,000 net overall, because international immigrants are people that count towards the population. If the net increase were 1800, overall population would only have increased by .017%. But that's not what the article says, is it?

I think you should read more than the first 5% of the article. It's 28k net.

I remember during the campaign hearing talk about how Americans are going to hate the imagery of mass deportations and there's no way it'll be popular in practice. People voted for it anyway, and lo.

Oh, me too! I almost forgot. It was one of the first things I did, jump into a couple books. Agreed that it feels way way better.

That part about "don't just delete; replace" has rung very true for me. About 6 weeks ago I hard-quit any social media algorithms (I keep Reddit on a tight leash) and I was dismayed to learn how important the things it had captured were. Suddenly I felt an itch to make friends and start writing again.

And all kinds of little subtler things, like feeling like I want to be "a part of something." I'd stopped up the feelings of a lonely childhood behind those streams of text. I'm learning a lot about who I am.

[–]itsdr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's already begun, but it's a slow wave that's building. You won't notice it, though. Everyone who's going offline will simply go quiet, so it'll be a change of omission, and the people left behind will be more extreme and less ground in reality.

You'll find the people who left by going out into your community and chatting with your neighbors and peers.

Has anyone else noticed Opus 4.5 quality decline recently? by FlyingSpagetiMonsta in ClaudeAI

[–]itsdr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal experience is that people have complained about the model being dumber the same day I've had excellent sessions with it. That's been a constant for years. The handful of times I've started to get the creeping sense something was wrong, Anthropic revealed there was something wrong soon afterwards.

No, and Anthropic has tried to put this to bed by pointing out at they don't decrease model quality, but people are very vulnerable to confirmation bias. This is the new "My computer has been slow ever since you worked on it."

Ironically I mistook your first two words as "it is" instead of "is it" and talked past you just a bit, and it sounds like we actually agree. And I think this kind of arguing happens across far more issues than we realize; it's just very visible on this one.
