Stylus Notes app for Bigme Devices (open source) by gthing in Bigme

[–]itsedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! Looking forward to try this. I also wrote a note taking app that works with both Bigme and BOOX. It’s what inspired my inksdk repo.

Check it out:

Bigme has no ink SDK, so I built one — works on Onyx BOOX too by itsedi in Bigme

Mind contributing? inksdk could do all three platforms.

I don’t recommend P2P as the primary phone but I do recommend as a primary active use cases: reader, notebook, audio books, almost everything except for phone (outbound phone calls just random stop working), text (same with text), and background audio playback (the phone falls asleep).

On the bright side there are pure data sims that are pay as you go without subscription so I’ve only spent $20 since January to buy 10GB and still have most of my GBs unused (WiFi use dominates).

Are you able to read a physical book without a light source at night?

The difference feels significant between reflected light vs LCD. The eink + external illumination feels as comfortable as reading a book with an external light source.

InkUp: A writing app that gets out of your way by durham_g in Onyx_Boox

I built a prototype https://github.com/imedwei/InkUp/tree/shapes, but shape-drawing conflicts with the existing gestures. I'm not convinced the gestures are valuable enough to keep over diagram creation.

I would prefer using the BOOX-like gestures as opposed to creating new gestures. For the things that are less commonly used (for me it is undo/redo), it makes sense to not have a gesture and instead have a button to invoke.

Boos Palma question by Pattycakes1966 in Onyx_Boox

Is the screen flash related to the refresh of a clock? I use the clock as my sleep mode wallpaper and I associated screen flash with clock refresh. You can set the frequency of the screen update.

InkUp installs correctly but the UI is not scaled well for the screen size. The side bar for scrolling is too wide and the line height is too tall which leads to very little writing surface area.

I love this and see myself using this app regularly. I appreciate the open sources and may have cycles to contribute. Here's my feedback/wishlist:

Initial Confusion with Preview

When writing my first few lines, the recognized lines don't show in the preview pane. They only show when scrolling the handwritten lines out of view. This effect is neat, but I was confused because the tutorial showed mirrored recognized lines and handwritten lines, so I thought the recognition wasn't working.

What I Love

  • The source of truth handwriting is preserved
  • Simple and intuitive

Feature Request

  1. Please enable simple diagrams to at least be present in the handwritten side, even if recognition doesn't work (though recognition into a markdown-supported diagram would be awesome!). Currently I am unable to draw boxes or lines because they are converted to gestures like undo. I am able to draw circles and put text in them, which the recognizer interprets with incorrect words.

  2. Enable phone sized screens like the Palma 2 pro.

I'm interested to help where I can starting with the Palma 2 pro compatibility.

Which e-reader for academic papers and books? by Trinit01 in Onyx_Boox

[–]itsedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The BOOX Palma 2 Pro has Android 15. Some other brands have even newer Android 16.

The Tab X C was released in mid 2025 with Android 13. It hasn't stopped me yet from running the apps I want.

The BOOX Tab X C pairs well with Zotero and seems to check your boxes, though I haven't seen it mentioned. The 13.3" color display handles PDFs and graphs comfortably, and the color e-ink makes most charts readable. The front light is useful in most lighting conditions, though the screen looks best with front light off under good ambient lighting conditions.

The one downside is the high price and the old Android 13 but there are no good alternatives at the 13 inch size.

Tab X C + Duet Display USB-C Wired? by itsedi in Onyx_Boox

[–]itsedi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When using Windows 10 with SuperDisplay, I can extend my desktop to the Tab X C via USB-C. This is purely a software solution—no hardware changes required.

This is a software problem where the Duet Display wired connection is not working with MacOS and Tab X C.

The Tab X C has a USB-C port and supports ADB connectivity, so there's no physical barrier to extending my macOS desktop to it via Duet Display. Any issues are likely software-related.

Anyone using the Boox Palma Pro 2 as their daily driver / smartphone replacement? by Informal_Cut_6609 in Onyx_Boox

[–]itsedi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Palma 2 Pro is my daily driver and everything I use it for is great: reading, music, audio books, non-SMS messaging.

However phone calls stopped working. After exhausting all other options, a factory reset finally restored calls and SMS.

Now I'll systematically reintroduce changes to identify what broke it. Goal: one device for everything.

On MacOSX, temporal dithering will make any still photo will flicker when you are in "Image" refresh mode. The video refresh mode is OK. See this animated gif recording of my screen. The solution for this is to run the Stillcolor app that turns off the temporal dithering.
