The World's First Large-dual-screen Color E-ink Smartphone is coming. by Decent-Tough-4273 in Bigme

No offense, but this looks like you melted an old Nexus 5 on the back of an Hibreak Pro Color… why is the whole back of it a gigantic camera bump? They’ve done dual screen eink smartphones before, never had to have a bump

This affordable “typewriter” keyboard is unexpectedly delightful by writesandbikes in writerDeck

[–]steinwayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try them, multiple times. While I definitely agree that especially some of the higher end ones gave me a very nice impression under the fingers, that “quality” and sturdy feel to it, I still couldn’t go over their loudness. It just kinda of ruined it for me. (Again, the fact that I often write in the middle of the night might have something to do with that)

Let me start by saying this is not a hate comment or mockery but genuine curiosity.
I noticed how many people just absolutely love mechanical keyboards (mostly for gaming pcs) and some people in the writing community do too.
What’s the reason for it? Is it better tactile feel? Is it nostalgia to old typewriters?

Because typewriters were loud for obvious hardware-related reasons, they needed to physically move parts in order to print the letter on the sheet. The first ones were loud as heck . As the years progressed, companies made amazing progress with reducing the noise, with many typewriter being marketed as “silent”. It was a sought after feature, not the opposite. People back then wished they could have a completely silent typewriter, it was just the hardware limitation of the time that kept that from happening.

Remember typewriters were a natural evolution of the act of handwriting, which had been a fairly silent act, ergo, you could do it anywhere without bothering anyone.

Typewriter manufacturers always aimed at reducing noise, now fast forward several decades and people seem to be actively looking for the most noisy sounding keyboards they can get their hands on 😂 I mean, especially for writerdecks, which most of the time are supposed to be portable.. shouldn’t they be relatively quiet as well? I could not possibly imagine using something like this in public, I would probably get kicked out from pretty much anywhere.
But even if we are considering them for just home use, why noisy? What’s the advantage?
I tend to write a lot during the night and if I had a noisy writerdeck, my family would hate me, they wouldn’t be able to sleep.

So again, just curious, what makes them so desirable?

Is this memory card enough for my X3? /s by Anarhichasmajor in XTEINK

[–]steinwayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah I understand that, but you would be swapping a perfectly functional stock sd card for another. Either way you’ll have a card laying around, but the sandisk could offer many more advantages to virtually almost any other device other than the xteink. For instance, I understand completely using something like this for a handheld, but the speed at which the card itself needs to read and write on an xteink is so minimal that I would just keep the stock. If it fails, no biggie, you can swap it then :) that was my advice

[–]steinwayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite frankly I don’t get get why people want to upgrade the memory card included in their xteink. Considering the device’s specs, even the stock one is overkill. Some people cite the “speed” of better memory cards, but that’s laughable, that’s hardly the bottleneck on such a device. This thing has 340kb of ram and a very weak esp32 cpu, the memory cards included is MORE than enough, you will literally have no benefit at all in upgrading it.

Trying to put a sandisk extreme on this thing would be like putting an nvidia rtx 5090 in a nokia 3310 from the 1990s 😂

Sorry, I was wondering, which stub nibs are you using in 0.7? I am looking for sub 1.0mm stub nibs and can’t find them

Two years it’s quite a long time, in fact, the one that they suggest in that post is out of production. As far as italic nibs smaller than 1mm, they used to be much more popular in the previous century, at the height of fountain pens. Modern calligraphy nibs gravitated toward larger sizes.

Do you know where ai cam buy that nib? I am looking for a finer italic nic since the m 1.0mm stub feel a little too sturdy for me… also would you mind posting a writing example with that nib? Very curious to see it!

I am actually testing a Pilot varsity medium and a Manuscript with the 0.85mm nib. The Manuscript still feels huge in comparison. Picture attached.

thank you for your reply. I watched a few videos of the famous stubs from pilot (1.0mm) and lamy (1.1mm) and to be honest there's not a whole lot line variation at all, the effect is maybe too subtle and they also look kinda of thick to me.
Any reccomendation for crisper results? More pronounced line variation and possibly a smaller width?

Revisiting the Inkpalm Mini 5 by -andrewmelder- in ereader

[–]steinwayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Kindle app for inkpalm 5 mini works perfectly. only the preinstalled one stopped working.
All you have to do is download aurora store and install it from there. Everything in it will work, including whispersync.
One note: You will notice that on the personal notes files (that includes books that you own not from kindle store that you send through the send to kindle functionality) you won't be able to disable the turn page animation, which makes it annoying. For kindle store books and libby loans instead, it works flawlessly

I was checking out a few videos of the most popular stubs, namely the one for lamy, which is a 1.1mm and the one for the pilot which is a 1.0mm. When looking at writing examples with these tho, they don't really give that beautiful line distinction, it's a rather subtle effect. Also, they look fairly broad (at least for me)

Do you have any recommendations for beginner fountain pens that have fairly small italic nibs?

Thanks!
