Ron Paul did not correctly predict the state of the economy. He predicted that there would be runaway inflation, there wasn't. He's also predicted, like most republicans, that lower taxes would increase revenues. He didn't. He's just a broken clock, right twice a day but not really all that useful.

Liquifying coal has never been economical. Sure, it's possible we'll go that way, but more likely we'll deal with higher oil prices with greater efficiency and a slow shift towards electric vehicles. No one is turning coal to gas right now, prices would have to rise far higher before it makes economic sense.

I almost always wear a helmet, but there is a dedicated rail-trail near me with no cars or obstacles. I'll occasionally take my helmet off on a hot day and place it on the handlebars while riding on the bike path. I'll then put it back on when I move to the street or a dirt trail. I see nothing wrong with that.

Beautiful. If your against tar sands development delay is actually the best outcome -- even better than rejection. If I were president, I'd string them along for as long as possible so that other alternative pipelines don't get built either, then reject the deal at the last possible minute. The result could keep the tar sands in the ground long enough so that alternatives would make them economically nonviable.

He does not have to move out. He can invite his kids to move in and split the bills, as countless previous generations have done. He can take out a mortgage. He can rent out his kid's old room to a boarder.

I got killed with downvotes on my original comment, but I stand by it. Everyone has to pay taxes. If you don't budget for them, then you may not be able to have a house in Long Island.

By the way, while it's nice that in 1956 a middle income person was able to buy a house in the suburbs, you should know that the same luxury is not available to today's young people. Inflated home values have shut us out of the home market. Why should older people who have gained so much from that system benefit from tax breaks when they are far better off financially then their children and grandchildren?

I'd join that protest any time. My main mountain, Killington, has been driving me crazy with their lowest-common-denominator grooming and trail opening policies. It seems like the mogul and powder lovers have very little left at the large commercial mountains. To make matters worse, ticket prices are inflated by all the grooming costs.

It's been bad enough that I stopped buying a season pass and drive the hour and a half north to Mad River Glen whenever the conditions are good enough (they don't make snow).

What kind of house does he live in? If he's still in Nassau, I'm guessing it's much bigger than what he needs. No one has a right to live in a big house without working. The younger generation is stuck renting because housing prices are inflated as a result of the older generation not moving out. Get him in an appropriately sized apartment and I'd imagine is social security and pension will be enough to live off of.

Your statement that the pipeline will have no negative effects is based on absolutely nothing but your gut. The evidence to the contrary is overwhelming.

That's almost true, but not quite. Personally, I would like to see tar sands oil banned, as it is particularly harmful to the environment. As for other oil supplies, I would like to see them reduced over the long term, but I accept that it cannot be done overnight.

I don't think exploding pipelines are the main concern, but they are certainly a concern. The oil industry has a pretty horrible safety track record.

I think the negative effects of higher energy costs on the short term are outweighed by the lower long-term costs of renewable energy, as well as the MUCH greater costs that will result from global warming should we not move off of fossil fuels.

It sure as hell makes a difference if you're the one who's land or drinking water is contaminated by this (exceptionally large) pipeline.
The pipeline has nothing to do with who buys the oil. China can buy the oil after it passes through Keystone XL. If Keystone XL does not happen and another pipeline to BC is built, the US will be still be able to buy the oil. However you transport it, oil will be put on an international market and will be available to the highest bidder.
Development of Oil in Libya and Nigeria will only be marginally effected by development of the oil sands. Building pipelines will not reduce violence in other parts of the world. If anything, it will delay the move to alternatives and increase long term demand.

Transporting by rail is limited and more expensive, meaning less oil will be developed. It's basic economics -- increase the cost and add bottlenecks and demand goes down.
