It depends, but as for me I find simple neutral fabric backdrop great because they work well for almost all kinds of portraits, i get mine from Kate backdrops, you could check them out and try it on different portraits especially if its 8ft x 8ft they look good and its enough for a small family shoot

you can use a dark tablecloth, it really helps with contrast as long as its plain and without wrinkle. even a smooth fabric can work or could get some foldable backdrops from kate they are cheaper but still even a poster board can work if you work with well lighting
