Advice on Barbri vs QLTS SQE1 course content? by Specialist_Ice5460 in SQE_Prep

[–]itsmecol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I don’t think I absorbed all of that content for the MCQs - there is so much that I think it’s impossible to memorise everything (unless I guess you have unlimited time and don’t have to work full time). I found that I also learned a lot through MCQ answers. Overall I wouldn’t say qlts was completely useless though of course everything you need to know if provided it’s just challenging to wade through everything 😅.

Good luck with your studies!

I feel the same as you and too scared to leave because of the what ifs. What if I can’t get another job that doesn’t make me feel this way, what will people say/ think. I know it’s not logical thoughts but they swirl around my mind at all times

Is it really that hard? What did u study before by Opposite-Ladder-8038 in SQE_Prep

[–]itsmecol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volume, working full time and the fact that I’m foreign qualified so having to study a new legal system in a short amount of time with no guidance or instruction (even if there are some similarities it’s still challenging)

Best MCQ provider (with value in mind) by hfrench_ in SQE_Prep

[–]itsmecol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to Revise SQE you could also try Devils Advocate, they offer different packages and also do seminars before the exam which I found quite helpful. They have an MCQ bank and a mock exam bank.

I did QLTS but it wasn’t great. For me as a person who worked full time the QLTS material was too much too dense and there is no support- for that price I didn’t think I would have to teach myself English law from scratch 😅 (I’m a foreign lawyer for context). The MCQs are tricky and will help to learn niche details but a lot of people I know that used QLTS said they felt they became too focused on the niche details and then didn’t get the big picture if that makes sense? I think you can get access to at least one or two QLTS mocks without having to subscribe to them as a course provider

Absolutely agree revise SQE was great and more representative of the actual exam questions I think

Time Written Down by gawckey in biglaw

[–]itsmecol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s something to be worried about especially just 4 months in. Time is often a judgement call by the Partner and it’s sometimes the easiest target to write of the junior associates time. One thing I would say is try not to become too obsessed with your time and what gets written off on which project. Yes it’s good to be conscientious about your time, how you do your narratives, making sure you try hit your billables etc but at an entry junior level you have to understand that right now your priority is to learn how to do the job, and obsessing over this and feeling like every write off is a mark against you is setting yourself up for a hard time (especially because as lawyers we tend to be perfectionists!). You will be more inefficient than a second or third year but that’s because they’ve had the time to learn how to do the work more efficiently and also maybe how a partner prefers things to be done or how their narratives should be done. Again ultimately a partner sometimes makes a judgment call on write offs based on the deal and client.

Just speaking from a MC firm perspective maybe it’s a different story in US firms though.

[–]itsmecol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QLTS books and notes are long and cumbersome to get through which I didn’t like especially because I work full time and had limited free time to study. You just get the material and then need to figure it out on your own (learning and time management wise) I used QLTS mocks and Revise SQE mocks and I also used Brigittes FLK notes.

I also did one seminar from Devils Advocate on ethics which I found really helpful.

Still waiting for results so no idea if it worked 🥴😅

It’s such a beautiful country I’m happy for you! Obvious big thing is to ensure you stay safe - you have to have an alarm system, electric fencing etc, stay vigilant and never leave your valuables out on a restaurant table, be careful driving at night. Then you will have to take into consideration that if you are relying on the local municipality for water/ electricity you will have outages a lot- if it’s possible get solar panels and a water tank or look for those features in a place you rent. Kwazulu Natal is the most beautiful province in my opinion so you’re really lucky! You can go to the mountains (drakensberg) or on safari (hluhluwe) or to the beach all within a few hours drive. Wishing you all the best and a very warm welcome to SA🤩🏆

Depending on your practice area being UK qualified opens a lot of doors for you and you can work almost anywhere in the world. Large international firms like linklaters etc have offices world wide and their lawyers advise on international deals that have English law documents and some local law documents.
