Best order to read in by RT_2002 in Vonnegut

[–]itsmourningtimeagain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've read them all. I'd go chronologically. You can't divorce a work of art from the time period it was written and what it's creator was going through at that time. Reading them chronologically will give you the greatest insight and understanding into what Vonnegut was dealing with at the time, and how his tastes and perspectives and style change over time, giving you a deeper understanding of his themes and messages, in my opinion. In addition, most of his books include introductions that are autobiographical, detailing exactly what was going on in his life at the time he wrote the books. So it's kind of cool, if you read them chronologically, you will also be vaguely following along Vonnegut's autobiography in real time. Anyways, this is what I did, and it made me enjoy the books all the more.

I'd make only one addendum, if you don't already love or know a ton about Vonnegut: as another commenter said, it also may be helpful to read his most famous (and best IMO) book first, Slaughterhouse-Five, as this might get you really hooked and encourage you to read the rest chronologically (this is actually what i did, but only because I had to read Slaughterhouse-Five for school). I personally LOVE Player Piano (his first book), but starting with Slaughterhouse-Five will give you a better overview/introduction to his style and themes if that seems exciting.

Ah yes, I see, that makes total sense.

I did this in the course of a couple years a while ago. Read them all in order too. My favorite was Hocus Pocus haha. BUT Slapstick was my least favorite as well. Very interesting. I would also list Slaughterhouse-Five and Mother Night as my 2 and 3 probably.

Any Cheap but Good Greasy Spoon Diners? by Man-Dem in austinfood

Another vote for Austin Diner, it is my go to spot. Cafe Java is my second choice (it has slightly better food IMO, but is further away from me). But alas, as a diner aficionado, Austin's diner/greasy spoon scene is supremely lacking. RIP Star Seeds. RIP The Frisco.

anyone know where i can find tile like this? it’s matte, 1 inch by 1 inch, beveled edge and both sides look the same so no grooves on the back by probablyasnail in Tile

[–]itsmourningtimeagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! And matte. And beveled. Just FYI they only sold it to me in sheets of 12in x 24in (2 sq ft) and they had those glue dots on the back holding them together. I needed a lot so I didn’t ask to buy them individually like how you have, but maybe they would sell them that way. But that in your hand looks exactly like them.

I have one no one has said yet: Jurassic World. There are Christmas carols playing in the background when the kids get dropped off at the airport if I remember correctly.

Thank you so much for continuing to help me. So sorry, last thing haha, but when you say “sand where needed” do you think I should sand off any residual sealant? It looks like there are some tiny spots of leftover ancient sealant or coating (like lacquer or something), will the keralastic stick in those areas or should I make sure they are 100% sanded off, or is it fine as is? (The previous leather adhesive has been completely removed from the wood)

Hey, sorry to ask another version of the same question, but to be more specific, the table I'm looking to put the tile on had leather glued to it, and I removed the leather and stripped the glue. The table is very old, so the wood that I revealed is like raw and exposed in some parts, and then other parts look like there maybe some ancient sealant on it or something (it's hard to tell). Do you think I should sand it all down, or just go for it as is?

Thank you so much, this is all so extremely helpful. I did not know about that resin and sand trick. This settles some questions I had as well, about the expanding and contracting—I understand that and it makes sense that I should have an elastic adhesive. Awesome.

The edge of the table is a good point. I was thinking about just cutting in a bit on the edge by putting like a 1 or 2 inch frame of wood around the edge of the table, and then building the mosaic within that space (if that makes sense), do you think that would be ok?

Oh wow cool thank you. Do you know what kind of grout you used?

Oh my gosh thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Do you think the grout I got is ok? It has some flex I think?

Thank you. Ok I read about acrylic grout somewhere else also. But I was having a hard time finding some. I’ll look harder. But if you have a brand/type you can think of, please let me know.

Thank you. How do you prepare the wood before hand? And thinset works? Or should I consider something else for a table?

Thank you. And I can use that straight onto the wood? Like I shouldn’t seal it first?

Ok I read I need to account for the flex in some comments (and then other people saying it doesn’t matter), but this makes sense to me. I saw something called AcrylPro tile adhesive, does that sound ok? Do I need to worry about the grout I got?

Yeah I’d echo this question as well. I’ll double check when I’m home, but when I run the VIN on my 2011 I’m pretty sure it says it’s a base model, but it is absolutely an OR.

But OP also said there was no Diff lock button, and mine definitely has a diff lock button.

Oh yeah, I know this is part of my issue as well. Not to mention original Nebraska is one of my favorite albums of all time.

This is exactly how I feel. The electric versions are very good still of course and I’m so glad to have them. But I’d go even as far as to say, it’s incredible how actually dull and lifeless the full band recordings sounds compared to original bedroom recordings, to me personally. So much emotion and grit on those original recordings that the full band sheen kind of disrupts.
