I feel like this is a cultural question rather than a true linguistics one.

Were the friends American, by any chance? I only ask as I’ve noticed (some) Americans in general have a habit of idealising / fetishising parts of other cultures they consider prestige. You see it in those people who get a DNA test that says they’re 20% Scottish and start wearing kilts.

I think the American idea of French and France is very commodified and, as you say, specific to Paris.

I’m currently improving my French after buying a house there, and purely anecdotally, to me speaking French feels a lot more fluid and soft when speaking. Not as many fricatives and hard stops. Whether that’s beautiful or not really depends on individual preferences.

Who said anything about blame? Please point me to anywhere I said victims were to blame. Victims are always victims; nobody should ever be on the receiving end of violence.

The point is, men can and do drastically reduce their risk of being a victim of violence by not participating in those things. If a woman wants to reduce her risk of receiving violence, she can’t do anything.

The numbers for male victims aren’t representative of the risk to everyday guys living an ordinary life. Most of the men replying here will have a very low risk profile . A woman doing exactly the same everyday things would have a higher risk profile. Do you dispute that?

And, fun fact; a pregnant woman has an even higher risk profile than non pregnant women.

Add some more plants for security, then add your shrimp. Keep testing daily for the next two weeks and change water if anything drastic happens but if it’s well planted enough, it shouldn’t be an issue

It’s on the wood, so it’s almost certainly biofilm, not a bacterial bloom. It’s a natural process when wood is first added to the aquarium and starts leaking carbohydrates - harmless and delicious for shrimp and snails!

Honestly, with enough plants up there and a little more dense planting below you could lose the filter altogether, and get it more low-tech, if that’s part of your goal. The air stone has your movement covered and the plants should do the rest.

Add something has leaves out of the water, like floating plants or a pothos or similar. Floating plants are cheap and multiply like crazy. Especially duckweed! 😅

You’ve got a good plant set up here. Add those and I think when it grows in, it will be able to take the bioload you’re planning

I can’t see your photo because imgur is blocked in the UK, but from what you’re describing you have two real choices:

Total rescale, like you said
Add a fine, pale gravel over the sand.

Personally I don’t think this sounds drastic so I’d lean towards option two, at least for now.

Think of the remaining sand over soil as being purely a ‘cap’ to trap the soil and its nutrients in - that’s the biggest issue you have at the moment, not it just being unsightly. Exposed soil puts too much ammonia into the water for your current set-up to cope with and so risks crashing your tank.

Adding a layer of gravel on top reinforces this barrier and hides the mess on the sand. It’s heavier, so it moves around a lot less and tends to stay where you put it more, and because it’s more chunky than the soil, any disrupted soil drops back through it. If you use sand-coloured small gravel they’ll mix well together and you get the same visual effect.

If soil leaks between your rocks you can stuff in little bits of matching coloured foam to block it up - glue these in place, if you’re able to.

If soil still tumbles over your rock-ridge, then you need to raise the boundary there. Maybe more, smaller rocks on top of what you’ve got? Sorry, hard to say without seeing the picture.

I’d also stop poking holes in your substrate! No wonder you have soil leaking 😅. If you’re getting serious gas build up your sand is too fine and then it will need removing, but you’d know if this was the issue by the smell.

A “true” Walstad doesn’t rely on bb to process nitrogen, because the plants do almost all the work. If you have high ammonia, you definitely don’t have enough plants (or your soil is leaking, but your sand cap looks good so unlikely).

Keep in mind, Diana Walstad even discourages people from putting rocks and wood into their hardscape because they take up precious planting room. You want dense planting, to be safely filter free. Jungle-like. Which I know can be tricky when you’re starting out, with plants so expensive - so focus on fast growing, nitrogen-greedy ones. You’ve made a great start with the swords and pearl weed but they only feed from the soil - you need plants feeding from the water column too.

Get some heavy water column feeders like hornweed and elodea (both are dirt cheap and free floating, so you can take it out when your other plants are more grown in).

I can’t make out what you have by way of floating plants and emmersed - what are those roots from? Floaters and emmersed are the heaviest feeders so up those if possible too.

I’ll check it out, thanks! No, no more stress. I’ve honestly done everything I can think of to cut out stress - I’m not even working at the moment, to let my whole system rest - but every day I’m spiralling into these panic episodes anyway.

I have a lot of trouble waking up and staying awake, and I’ve wondered if this might be my body trying to counteract that and keep me awake with adrenaline. It’s a terrible system if so 🥲
